He was a 1937 graduate of Cassville High School and a 1941 graduate of the University of Missouri. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Force. He owned and operated a cheese plant in Mena, Arkansas, and was a commercial real estate broker in Van Buren, Arkansas. He was owner and operator of a motel in Gallatin, Tennessee, retiring in 1990. He had a brother named James who also had family buried in King. - Feb. 22, 1908, Cassville Democrat - Pleads Guilty to Common Assault: The case of State vs. Wesley Galyen, charge with assault wish intent to rape, came to a sudden termination the circuit court Tuesday morning and the defendant was allowed to plea guilty to common assault, and pay a fine of $50. and cost, and the case was ended. So far as we know all persons concerned in this case, are good citizens, and we are glad that good peacemakers have accomplished results in this case. Hammers died of pneumonia fever, at their home in Seligman, Missouri, after a brief illness of eight days. She was a daughter of the late John G. Harbin of near Washburn, and was the last one of the Harbin family of six children. She was born Aug. 29, 1865, and died Feb. 25th, 1908, at the age of 42 years, 5 months, and 27 days. She was married to W. B. Hammers, Dec. 25, 1887, and leaves eight children, four boys and four girls, the youngest an infant 25 days old. She was of kind and loving wife and mother, and had a host of friends through the county, who mourn her loss. We miss our mother and our home; we are oh, so lonesome. His mother was Martha Amanda (Mitchell) (Hammers) Brummett. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 28, 1893 - W. Burl Hammers, while under the influence of liquor, last Tuesday, threw a glass tumbler at his wife, which, missing her, struck his child, about a year old, cutting its face quite badly. At first it was reported that the child could not live, but later it was learned the hurt was less serious. Dr. Porter of Seligman attended to the child's wound. Mr. Hammer was at once placed under arrest and gave bond for his appearance at the preliminary trial, which was set for Monday before Squire Brooks. Prosecuting Attorney Beasley of Cassville conducted the prosecution and J. S. Davis the defense. The defendant waived examination and was bound over to await the action of the grand jury. - Cassville Republican, Oct. 5, 1893 - Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hammers of Washburn have been in attendance at court this week. We are pleased to learn that their baby is not near so badly hurt as was reported and the sobering up of Mr. Hammer has brought him to a realization of his duty and old rye is a thing of the past with him. Research Note: Wife of John B. Arnold (m: 1859) and John G. Harbin (m: 1872). - Mrs. Martha (Gowan) Harbin died suddenly at the home of her grandson, C. S. Arnold, 4 3/4 miles out on the Washburn road, Friday night, Feb. 14, 1913, of acute indigestion and heart failure, aged 77 years, 7 months and 28 days. She was born in Rutherford county, Tenn., Aug. 18, 1835, and was a daughter of the late Mr. Alfred P. and Mrs. Elizabeth Gowan, who came to Barry county, Oct. 10, 1856, and located near, Washburn, and in 1859. She and the late John B. Arnold were married and two children were born of this marriage, who are: J. A. Arnold, residing between Cassville and Exeter and Mrs. J. M. Mitchell of near Seligman. Mr. Arnold was killed near Washburn, Jan. 16, 1863. In 1872, she and the late John G. Harbin of near Washburn, were married and he died in 1881. Since that time, she has made her home a part of the time on her farm near the Vanzandt school house with her son, daughter and grandson. Survivors include: one son, Douglas Henry and his wife, Angela, of Chouteau, Okla.; three daughters, Melissa Henry and her husband, Jimmy Phillips, of Little Rock, AR, Stephanie Henry, of Rogers, AR, and Sandra Ricke and her husband, Elvis, of Lowell, AR; one brother, Dewain Henry, of Seligman, MO; two sisters, Sheila Buczek-Booth, of South Carolina and Theresa Haynes, of Seligman; and five grandchildren.
