Research Note: His death certificate reads that his father was Jerry Anderson Oxendine, born TN, and his mother's name was Laura Crawford, born in TN. His wife was listed as Roxie (Jones) Oxendine. He was age 44 years, 3 months and 14 days old when he died. The cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis, another condition was listed as silicosis. The record clerk at the hospital was the informant. Roxie is buried at Bethel Jolly Cemetery under Roxie Benbrook. When Ted Roller and I did the photographing of this cemetery, we did not find any Purcell graves or even a small piece of the stone posted for this person. Considering the care we took in cleaning and digging up stones so that every piece of data could be recorded, I doubt this stone was in Bethel Jolly. SSW: Sarah E. - Research Note: The Neosho Times, Oct. 10, 1929 - Mr. Putman was a pioneer settler of this region. He was one of the most progressive farmers of the county and took an active part in the political life of the county. He had lived in the Newtonia neighborhood for fifty-nine years and was well liked and respected by all his neighbors. He was the father of one of the largest families in the county and as his children grew up and scattered over the region, gaining the respect of their neighbors and increasing the number of their friends, the admiration for Mr. and Mrs. Putman spread in proportion. No greater praise can come to anyone than can be said of Mr. Putman and his excellent wife. They raised to be useful and respected citizens, fourteen of the seventeen children born to them. John Ezekiel Putman was born in Gordon county GA, Feb. 6, 1851, and died Oct. 2, 1929. He was the son of Elijah and Mary E. (Mary E. Dodd, a native of Scotland) Putman and the grandson of Ezekiel Putman of North Carolina. In 1868 John Ezekiel Putman left his native state and after spending two years in Alabama came to Missouri in 1871, settling in Newton county. In early manhood he was converted and joined the Presbyterian church. While in Alabama he was married to Sarah E. Grimes. To this union were born seventeen children, four having died in infancy. Thirteen children survive him, five sons and eight daughters. They are: James B., of Mulvane, KS; George W., Pierce City; Lewis C., Newtonia; Richard B., North Platte, NE; Dewey, Denver, CO; Mrs. Alice Bowdoin, Sumnerville, GA; Mrs. Grace Nutting, Baxter Springs; Mrs. Hortense Young, Willard, MO; Mrs. Lillie Paden, Pierce City; Mrs. Carrie Cunningham, Newtonia; Miss Edith at Home and Miss Rachael of Drumwright, OK. He is also survived by thirty-three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were read by Rev. W. Goodnight. Since the death of Mrs. Putman last winter, Mr. Putman had been failing in health. He was living on his farm home north of Fairview with Miss Edith and Mrs. Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham being engaged in caring for the farm. He had seemed as well as usual upon retiring for the night, Oct. 2, and was in good spirits, having planned a visit to one of his daughter's homes in the near future. When Mr. Cunningham arose in the morning he found Mr. Putman had died during the night. Death was due to heart trouble and had come upon him apparently painlessly and without awakening him. Mr. Putman's passing closes one of the most unusual lives that has been spent in this county. Few men can boast the family which was like his. It is a model to strive for in its mutual affection for each other and in the character and usefulness to God and the country of its members. It is Hard to conceive of any man having lived more successfully and usefully from every point of view than he has.
