His usual address was Ridgley, Barry Co., MO and he'd lived in the community for 20 years. An auto accident on hwy 37 near Cassville, MO, was the cause of his death, was a crushed skull and chest. He second married Bessie Marie (Day) Stanley. - Joplin Globe, August 28, 1947 - YOUTH IN CASSVILLE CRASH IS IMPROVED. - John Hood remains Serious, However - Funeral Plans Made for Two Killed in Collision.....Cassville, Mo., Aug. 27. -The condition of John Hood, 19 years old, who was seriously injured in the auto-truck head-on collision south of here Tuesday afternoon, was reported as improved by his physician, Dr. George W. Newman, at the Barry County hospital tonight and the completion of funeral arrangements for the two men fatally injured in the same accident has been announced. Services for Charles Edwin Laney, 38 years old, of near Exeter, will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Exeter Baptist church by the Rev. Charles Vanzandt. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery at Exeter under direction of the Koon funeral home. Rites for Shirden Bailey, 52 years old, of near Exeter, will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Koon chapel here by the Rev. Francis Goodnight. Burial will in Hickman cemetery, west of Washburn. Both men, widely known farmers, were killed instantly when the automobile in which they were riding crashed into a semi-trailer truck loaded with hay while passing another vehicle on the highway. They were accompanying Hood, the driver, to Cassville. J.R. Bixler of Wheaton, driver of the truck , was uninjured. Mr. Laney’s survivors are his widow, Mrs. Belvia Laney, and two sons and five daughters, Eugene, Carroll, Ellen Mae, Bonnie, Emma Faye, LaVerne and Joyce, all of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Laney of Exeter; one brother, Vernie Laney of Rocky Ford, Colo., and four sisters, Miss Alma Laney of Exeter, Mrs. Naomi Sappenfield and Mrs. Alta Utter of Shelton, Wash., and Mrs. Leona Painter of Washburn. Research Note: She was the daughter of Titus and Ina (Rose) Stephens. On May 10, 1959, she was united in marriage to Ferrell Bowers. Preceding her in death were her parents, one infant sister, Barbara Stephens and one infant granddaughter, Melissa McNeill. Henrietta grew up in the Washburn community and was a 1958 graduate of Southwest High School, Washburn, Missouri. She later attended Crowder College, Neosho, Missouri. During her young adult years, she lived in Kansas City, Missouri, and was employed at Hallmark Cards. Throughout her middle years, she moved with her husband, encouraging him as he pursued a career with Pearle Optical. During the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, Henrietta and Ferrell relocated to Springfield, Missouri; Overland Park, Kansas; Chicago, Illinois, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Research Note: He was the son of Homer Riley and Ethel Mae (Clark) Burns. On May 2, 1953, in Washburn, he was united in marriage to Leta Hickman. Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, James, Mick and H.E. Burns and two sisters, Joyce Burns and Lillian Cargile. Henry grew up and received his education in Gentry, Arkansas. During the Korean War Henry joined the United States Army, serving from January 23, 1951, until October 25, 1952. He worked on several Dam sites for the Corp of Engineers for several years. He retired as a dairy farmer. Henry enjoyed riding horses and was a member of the Barry County Sheriff's Posse for many years. For fifteen years he served on the Southwest School Board. Research Note: Anna Mae Van Zandt married Elmer Cline, Barry Co., MO, Sept. 29, 1912. She was a daughter of James Allen and Frances (Weathers) Van Zandt. D. J. Cline and J. A. Vanzandt were given as parents. Both Elmer and Annie gave their addresses as Garfield, AR. Anna Mae was deeded a farm by her father, James Allen VanZandt when she and Elmer were married. Elmer convinced her to sell it and they left and went to Pittsburg, KS. He worked as a railway conductor. She died within a year or so and was brought to Hickman for burial. The family thinks she died of pneumonia. The farm was sold to Rice Banks, son of Houston Banks who married Edith Morgan (She was Joe Morgan's daughter). Elmer left and went to Utah, and is thought to have married again. He never came back to the area. Their children were named Ruby and Raymond. The family called Anna Mae "Pet". She met the love of her life, Avaon Gastineau, in Wichita and they were united in marriage March 18, 1958. Robbie worked at a pharmaceutical company and Avaon was in the Navy when their first two children were born. Robbie and Avaon had four children. After the kids were born, Robbie and Avaon decided to move back to Pea Ridge to build their life together since they were both from the area. She worked at Emerson Electric where she retired after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Granny's Quilts of Love, a non-profit foundation that donated quilts to the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Research Note: She passed away at Circle of Life Hospital in Bentonville Arkansas, after lengthy complications from Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes and a surgery that left her paralyzed. Marla is preceded in death by her parents Avaon and Robbie Gastineau and her Nephew Trevor Warren. She was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes when she was 5. She soon learned how to give her own shots so she could lead a normal life and was always determined that her disease was not going to define her. She grew up In Pea Ridge Arkansas on a farm on Patterson Road. She ALWAYS had an animal that the was nurturing or loving. She played Basketball and was a Cheerleader in High School. Her first job was at the Pea Ridge Grocery store, then the Pizza Hut in Pea Ridge. Shortly after graduating high school, she went to work with her dad at Daisy BB. At 26 years old, she attended college at the University of Arkansas and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary education, one of her lifetime dreams. She developed diabetic retinopathy while attending college and had several surgeries during that time to help correct her vision. She spent a semester attending college blind. but that didn’t stop her, she received her degree. She taught various grades, but mostly kindergarten, at Pea Ridge Elementary, Elm Tree Elementary and Cooper Elementary. During her tenure at Elm Tree, she obtained her Master’s Degree while continuing to teach. She eventually had to give up her teaching career from complications due to her diabetes. | Benton Co. Mary's older stone has April 1, 1856 for the birth date and the newer on has 1846. The death date was reported in the paper as the 30th, but both stones have the 29th. Mrs. Gates had been down sick for about ten weeks and had not enjoyed good health for about seventeen years. In her last days on earth she told her sorrowing friends that she did not fear death as she was prepared to meet the Lord. She had lived a devoted member of the Christian church for twenty-two years. She leaves, besides a host of warm friends, a husband and four children to mourn her loss. Research Note: He was the son of Ralph C. and Myrtis (Tannehill) Hagee. On August 20, 1950, in Mason, Texas, he was united in marriage to Lucille J. Kelso, who preceded him in death on February 7, 1999, after forty-eight years of marriage. Also preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Bruce and Gordon Hagee and a great granddaughter, Micah Jean Jester. Clyde received his education in Harper, Texas, where he graduated from high school.
