He was born in Wichita, Kansas where he resided most of his life owning and operating Action Plumbing and raising his family. He was united in marriage to Judy Edelman, on July 14, 1973 at the First Baptist Church in Wichita. He was very active as a Boy Scout and Weeblos Leader during his time in Wichita. In his early years he enjoyed racing stock cars at the 81 Speedway north of Wichita. He and Judy moved to Shell Knob, Missouri in 2001 to make their home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Jody K. Adams Allerton; one brother, John Adams; one sister, Adeline Forsythe; and four grandchildren, Thomas and Clair Adams, Kevin Adams, and Jenny Lynn Adams. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Lou (Sapp). Earl was a graduate of Exeter High School in 1956, then enlisted in the U.S. Army until 1958. He worked as a lineman for Kansas City Power and Light for the majority of his 33 years there. He returned to his hometown of Exeter to enjoy retirement farming with his son. He was a member of First Baptist Church - Cassville committed to his faith. Throughout his lifetime, he invested his time and energy into his family, his church and service to numerous causes, such as Raytown Girls Softball League, Ararat Shrine Temple-Mini-Indy Club, HIS Children's Camp, and the board of the Exeter Fire Protection District. Shortly after graduation, Ron served his country honorably, first in the Army National Guard and then in the United States Navy, being honorably discharged on July 24, 1963. Ron earned his Bachelor's Degree from Mt. Vernon Bible College in Mt. Vernon, OH. On July 18, 1959 in East St. Louis, IL, Ron was united in marriage to Vernice Blyzes. They have been blessed with over sixty-two years together. During his career as a Pastor and servant of the Lord, Ron led congregations closer to our Savior from 1974 to 1998. He began at the Foursquare Church in Overland, MO, then Shreveport, LA and finally in Joplin, MO. He had also been a Director for the Monett Area Sheltered Workshop. Ron was preceded in death by one sister, Debra Durand. Research Note: Shell Knob, Barry Co., MO resident. She was the daughter of Elmer (Slim) and Harriet Betts. After graduating high school, she married Duane L. Nielsen on September 5, 1959, and together they raised their family in Fremont, Nebraska. Karen worked numerous jobs in the Fremont area, taking positions that would allow her to be active in the lives of her two sons. In 1989 Duane and Karen moved to Sidney, Nebraska where her job took her as a manager for Sapp Bothers Truck Stops. Then in 1992, they purchased a home in Shell Knob and relocated for Duane's retirement. After Duane's passing in 2001, she married Elzie Allen of Shell Knob and grew very active in her church. Karen was well known in the Shell Knob community and greeted everyone as a friend. She continued to work part-time after her 80th birthday until her health declined and she was no longer able to. Karen was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Harriet, and her husband Duane. Research Note: He was the only son of Kermit Allen, Jr. and Pauline (McGill) Allen. On July 25, 1956 he was united in marriage to Martha Ann Patterson, who preceded him in death in 1987. Later he married Terry Emery, who also preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his parents and one son, Michael Allen in 2013. Kermit grew up and received his education in Fort Worth, Texas where he graduated from high school and was an all-star football and basketball player. He was raised in humble conditions and put himself through college receiving his Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering. He began his career working in the Oil Fields in Odessa, Texas, entreprenerd his own small business, and worked up to President of a Worldwide Engineering Company, PB-KBB. Upon retirement he continued as a consultant. In 1990 he was inducted in the Who's Who for his contributions and innovations in chemical engineering. For several years he resided in Oklahoma and was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Tulsa, coached high school basketball, volunteered, dedicating his time and energy to recovering alcoholics. After retiring to Eagle Rock, he became a member of the Cassville Golf Club and was an excellent golfer. From June 4, 1963 until June 3, 1965, he served in the United States Navy in Vietnam. After John's military service he attended Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas on the GI Bill and gained a walk-on football scholarship. For thirty-five years John was employed at Union Carbide, traveling throughout the United States then retiring in 1995. After retirement John traveled around the world as a Safety Consultant. In 2000 he and Linda moved to Shell Knob, Missouri to make their home. Services will be held at a later date. LaRoyce's grandparents farmed near Castana, Iowa and were neighbors to a Marion and Leona Arnold who had a son born in November of 1936. Both babies were the subject of comparison as they grew, that son was named Jerry. During High school LaRoyce and Jerry became good friends and following graduation, on June 17, 1956 they were married. Jerry and LaRoyce made their first home in Ames, Iowa where Jerry attended college and LaRoyce worked in Hardware Store. Following college, they moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for a stint in the Army. The next stop was Monroe, Iowa where Jerry was a vo-ag teacher and LaRoyce a home maker and mother to their first child. Then to Laurel Nebraska where their second child was born. The Arnold's moved to Carroll, Ia. where LaRoyce worked in a green house and helped with the girl scouts. The next stop was Princeton, New Jersey for a few years where LaRoyce worked for a fuel oil company. Fort Dodge, Ia. became home for next 25 years. LaRoyce (and Jerry) purchased a sewing machine store which LaRoyce managed, she expanded it to include fabric and sewing accessories. LaRoyce repaired sewing machines and even made and sold prom dresses. She made suits for Jerry and once made a full set of uniforms for an entire group of Civil War reenactors. Upon retirement the couple moved to Shell Knob, MO where LaRoyce designed their dream home. In Shell Knob, LaRoyce became involved as office secretary for her church, Trinity Presbyterian. She also worked with the Chamber and at one point, managed it for several weeks while a new Director was being sought. In 2014, LaRoyce received the Chamber's Community Service Award. Upon returning home he put himself through American International College, in Springfield, Massachusetts, graduating baccalaureate in business management. He then worked until retirement as a Transportation Manager for Abbott Laborites, Chicago, Illinois. On September 11, 1999, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, he was united in marriage to Roberta L. Maynard. In 2004, Rodney and Roberta moved to Shell Knob, Missouri, to make their home. Rodney suffered multiple traumatic injuries in a 2005, motorcycle accident which left him a paraplegic having many health problems these last nine years. His wishes were granted, to be at home until the day he died, passing away peacefully with his wife holding him. There are no services planned at this time. Research Note: He was the eldest son of James K and Wanda (Phipps) Arthur. The family moved to Nevada, Missouri in 1948. Jim attended Nevada schools and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was later selected to attend Philmont Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico. He graduated Nevada High School in 1966. Upon graduation, Jim attended Pittsburg State University and the University of Central Missouri. On June 1, 1968, Jim married Vicki Curtis of Nevada, and to this union two children were born. Jim served in the US Army March 10, 1972, to March 7, 1975. He was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany working in the Comptroller's Office. Upon discharge, Jim completed his degree in Accounting from Missouri Southern State University and passed the CPA exam on his first try. He worked as a CPA for Baird, Kurt and Dobson in Joplin, before returning to Nevada to head up Arthur Accounting upon his Father's Retirement. He moved to the Ozarks in 1995. He owned and operated EFI Group, accounting firm. Jim was a long-time member of the Nevada Elks Lodge. He is survived by his significant other, Cheryl Arthur loved and cared for Jim until the time of his passing. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Lieutenant Colonel James K. Arthur; and two brothers, Terry and Greg. Interment will be held at Fort Scott National Cemetery at a later date. Parents not named on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, Cassville, August 20, 1914 - Nathan Baird for many years, a highly respected citizen of the vicinity of Cassville, died at his home about 4 miles southeast of town about 12 o'clock Sunday, August 16, 1914, from Bright's disease. He became afflicted several months ago and a general decline became evident to his wife and associates. All treatment came to be temporarily only availed nothing towards the regaining of his health and the victory of the disease soon became inevitable. The deceased was 66 years and 4 months old and was born in Smith County, Tenn., April 15, 1848. He was a son of the late Capt. J. M. Baird. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Lawrence County of this state where he grew to manhood. In the 70's he was married to Cris Beaver whom survives. To them were born no children. Soon after their marriage, they moved to the place where he lived until death. Besides his wife, he is survived by three brothers, John of Winfield, Kan., Chas. of Stotts City and H. S. Baird of Cassville, and one sister, Mrs. Linda Matlock of Stotts City. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home in charge of Rev. Ed Vanderpool. Interment was made on the home place at a spot selected by the deceased several years ago. In the death of Mr. Baird, Barry County loses one of its most highly respected citizens. He was a man of strong convictions and of unquestioned integrity and stability of character. He took an active interest in the affairs relating to his community and county. For thirty odd years he served successively, with the exception of one term, as school director of the Horner school district. We doubt if another man in the state had a longer record of service on the school board and took more interest in educating the youths of our country. After High School Penny moved to North Kansas City Missouri where she met Phillip Bailey in January 1971; they were married in May of 1971. During Penny's life she worked as a supervisor of housekeeping at Independence Missouri hospitals. After Hospitals she hired on at Ford Auto Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri while Phillip worked at the General Motors plant in Kansas City Kansas. After retirement Penny wanted to travel so Phillip hired on driving a semi-truck with Penny as his co-driver. They saw the country behind the wheel of a big rig. They drove for 11 years where they traveled to every state and Canada. Penny volunteered at the Barry County Museum and the Coast Guard Auxiliary where she was an instructor for the Coast Guard on Public Affairs and journalism. She was also qualified as a boat coxswain, search and rescue instructor, a National Auxiliary public affairs instructor, boating safety instructor, and a PWC operator patrolling Table Rock Lake assisting other boaters and keeping boaters safe. Penny and Phil have owned 4 sailboats and were planning on retiring on the water sailing up and down the east coast but after a rocky sailboat trip in the British Virgin Islands Penny changed her mind about going to sea; so ended their sailing career and hello trucking. Penny and Phil settled in Golden Missouri and began motor boating with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. After Penny got sick Coast Guard volunteer work stopped but she continued with the Barry County Museum as long as she could. There will not be visitation or a funeral per Penny's request. Research Note: Dee Dee grew up with her two younger sisters, Sheila and Moira, and brother, David, in Ardmore, a close-knit suburb of Philadelphia, PA. She attended St. Denis School in Havertown and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School in Drexel Hill. Dee Dee went on to study nursing at the Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned her degree in 1963 and practiced as a Registered Nurse. She subsequently joined the U.S. Navy in 1966 and eventually earned the rank of Commander. Dee Dee served in the Navy for 23 years, during which time she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master's Degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland, College Park. In a serendipitous moment in 1968, Dee Dee was caring for a wounded Vietnam War soldier at the San Diego Naval Hospital in California, when she was overwhelmed by her patient's charm and good humor. Edward Baker turned out to be Dee Dee's soul mate, and they quickly married and remained devoted to one another for over 40 years, until Ed's death in 2009. Research Note: Rocky Comfort, MO resident. He was the son of Herman and Marion (Tilton) Becker. He graduated from Okabena High School in Minnesota. In 1965, he sold almost everything he owned, including his 1925 Model T, and drove out west. He settled in Marina del Ray, California, and began working as a diesel mechanic. He worked on many of the boats in the marina and was even requested by Tom Jones numerous times to work on his yacht. Roger moved to San Diego in the late 70's where he continued to work as a bus mechanic for the school district. In the early 80's Roger moved to Rocky Comfort, Missouri, where he ran a herd of cattle and help local ranchers repairing their equipment and vehicles. In the last decade he was a familiar figure behind the wheel of his restored 1953 Ford or Studebaker pickups or his 1925 Model T, which was the original one he had sold back in 1965. He loved to travel, visit vintage car and railroad museums, and ride the old steam engine trains. He was like a grandpa to many people who grew up in Thomas Hollow, teaching them woodworking, how to drive and car repair skills. He appreciated all his neighbors who dedicated their time to make his life more enjoyable. On June 30, 1979, Catherine Elizabeth Starkey married Joseph William "Joe Bill" Birkenbach in Monett. They were blessed with over thirty-eight years together before his passing on October 11, 2017. According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, a 17-year-old female from Rogers, Ark., was driving a 2011 Nissan Sentra southbound when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck head-on a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer, being driven by Sally Daugherty, 77, of Monett. The collision caused both vehicles to overturn. Research Note: Dorys submitted her body to the University of Missouri Medical Center. She was a WWII/POW. She was the daughter of Lewis William Peterson and Augustine Klatt-Peterson. She was the oldest of three brothers and six sisters. During the time Dorys lived in Canada, her father worked building the grain elevators near the railroad so as a family they lived in tent cities. As a child, they would play in the grain elevators and use them as big slides and she attended a different school every year. In 1921 they moved to Minneapolis, MN. At the age of 13 Dorys went to work as a mother's helper to help her parents financially since she had so many brothers and sisters at home. As she grew up, she went to night school and finally attended the University of Minnesota. Dorys then became the Personnel Manager for Armours. She was also a big sister with the Big Sister Big Brother Organization and taught swimming at the YMCA. Dorys became a Naturalized Citizen in 1941 in Minneapolis. She then enlisted in the WAAC, now known as the WAC Army, in February 1943. After basic training she became a drill sergeant in Des Moines, IA and had the first Black Women's Troop. She was sent to New Guinea with the Army Ordinance Company. Dorys was on Pau Pau Island, Ora Bay where there were still head hunters and then to Lae Island where she met her husband Carl. For her wedding attire she used a parachute for her veil and used a white lace hankie in her fatigue pocket. During this time her tent was across from General Douglas MacArther's and she spoke of when he came ashore. She received a field commission of Captain during her stay on Lae Island. Dorys was then sent to the Philippines. While in the hospital recovering from a broken foot she became a Prisoner of War at the Santo Tomas Prison for three months. She was returned to the United States and received an Honorable discharge from Baxter General Hospital in Spokane, WA August 1945. Dorys moved to Fort Riley, KS in 1951 with her husband and children. She then became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She worked at Irwin Army hospital in Pediatrics as head administrator until 1976 when she retired. She then began her many volunteer jobs such as Pastoral Relations with the First Methodist Church in Manhattan, KS and outreach coordinator from 1978-1986. She was also active with the Manhattan chapter of hospice for 12 years. She then moved to Monett, MO in 1987 and belonged to the First Methodist Church. In 1990 she moved to Springfield, MO and belonged to the National Avenue Christian Church, the Minnesota Club and had a lifetime membership with the YMCA. During her time in Springfield she took a Caribbean Cruise at age 80 and received her certificate for scuba diving. Dorys lived her life to the fullest. She has sky dived, rode camels in the Holy Lands and was an avid swimmer until age 97. She was involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, League of Women Voters, NARFE, ABWA, AARP, Kansas State University Alumni Assoc. and Democratic Women's Club. Research Note: He was a son of Homer Riley and Ethel Mae (Clark) Burns. He was preceded in death by brothers James (Ella Mae), Henry (Leita Mae), Mick (Anna Mae), and H.E; sisters Lil (Wayne) Cargille, Evelyn (Roy) Sullivan, Joyce Burns, and Rachel (Raymond) Ash. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ardith. Bob was born and raised in Washburn, MO. He was in the first graduating class of Southwest High School. As a child he loved to ride horses and run track. For a time, he held the state record for the 100-yard dash. After graduation, he lived for a while with his sister Mayo and her husband Gene in Washington state. It was here that he rededicated his life to Christ. He moved to Costa Mesa, CA to attend Southern California Bible College for one semester where he was on the basketball team. He met his future wife Ardith at college. They married quickly and dropped out of school to work and raise a family. He worked mostly in construction around southern California. He also became a minister with the Assemblies of God and worked bi-vocationally in several churches. In 1978, he accepted the call to become pastor of the Assembly of God in Seligman, MO, where he stayed for 16 years. He built his home on the property where he was born and raised in 1984 and where he has lived since. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Darlene grew up and received her education in Harmony, Minnesota. She and Art owned and operated a donut shop which they named after themselves, Dart's Bakery and Lunch Counter in Cassville. She made beautiful cakes, including wedding cakes and was known at the "Cookie Grandma" who always sent a bag of cookies with the children as they were leaving. She and Art were active members of the Erwin Easley American Legion Post 118 and Auxiliary in Cassville and each served as President of their units the same year. Research Note: He was the first born of Carmon Russell Buntin and Gladys Standley Buntin. When he was three, the family moved to Oklahoma where his five siblings were born. The family attended a little country school in Pawnee, Oklahoma and graduated from the eighth grade. He was baptized in Mesa, Arizona as a young man, and later in life served as a vestryman of Emmanual Episcopal Church in Olathe, Kansas. When he was almost sixteen the family returned to near Bogard, Missouri to be near his Mother's family. Tragedy struck when his father died just two years later. Leland and his brother Cliff continued to farm and support the family. In those days there was no social security for widows and orphans, so the family worked together to put food on the table and wood in the stove. In 1944, Leland married (Doris) Jean Williams of Hale, Missouri. That was the same year he entered the US Army and served as a rifleman in the European Theater. He was wounded in March 1945 and awarded the purple heart. He returned to the United States to recuperate at military hospitals in Colorado and Texas. Discharged in 1945, he came home to Missouri. Leland and Jean joined his mother and siblings in Arizona, where they had moved for his mother's health. It was in Arizona that he learned the carpentry trade. In 1951, Leland, Jean and their two children returned to live in the Kansas City area of Missouri. Leland supervised the building of schools, hospitals and churches as construction superintendent for a large firm. Kansas City and the surrounding area were badly flooded in 1951, forcing many fur bearing mammals into the smaller streams. During that first winter, Leland set a trapline, getting up very early to run the line, working a long day, and running the line again after work to harvest the furs and prepare the hides. Through his love of fishing, he learned about the White River area and brought the family camping on the river near where Campbell Piont marina is now located on Table Rock Lake. In 1959 they bought the home to which they would eventually retire. Shell Knob was the vacation and weekend home many years. In the 60's, it was a full time home for two years while Leland built the Methodist Church at Aurora and worked on construction projects at Silver Dollar City. Retiring in 1983 meant time to enjoy coffee on the deck in the morning, swimming in the evening, and fishing whenever the mood would strike. Leland enjoyed square dancing and he and Jean served as officers for a number of years. He volunteered his skills to the Community Building and served on the board and as president. He served on the board for the Sports Complex and gave hours of labor to the ball park. A chain saw, 11 gallons of gas, and many many hours of hard work helped turn a nearly impassible county line road into the thoroughfare we know as YY9. His favored gift to the community was hard work and building expertise. He gave joyfully, but quietly and without fanfare. It was his way. - The body has been cremated.
