Research Note: Son of Charles Warwick Harper and Mary Catherine Scott. - Cassville Republican, June 24, 1897 - Herndon S. Harper, youngest son of Mrs. M. C. Harper, was born March 28,1874; departed this life June 9, 1897, at his home near Pioneer, Mo. His body was laid at rest in the Corsicana cemetery, funeral conducted by the writer, in a large crowd of relatives and friends. Herndon was loved and highly respected by both old and young who knew him. He was a member of the Purdy C. P. Junior C. E. S. and was always in his place ready to do his part. Just before he died he talked of Jesus and his love and said he was ready to go over, but that he regretted to leave mother and his dear sister. - Researchers say he was born in 1884 NOT 1874 in Randolph Co., WV. Cause of death was dysentery. Informant listed as Layman Herl of Purdy, MO. - Cassville Republican, August 4, 1910 - On the 27th day of July, 1910, the death angel visited the home of Homer Harrell, living three miles southwest of Purdy, MO., and took from them, their infant son, Oscar, age three months and thirteen days. Interment was made in the Corsicana cemetery on July 28. Funeral services was conducted by Sister Nannie Overton, who made very interesting and appropriate talk. Mrs. Grover Patterson of Rocky Comfort, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, March 23, 1933 - AUNT REBECCA HARRELL PASSES AWAY WEDNESDAY - Rebecca Turner, daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Turner, was born July 16, 1855 and departed this life March 22, 1933 at her home in Wheaton at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 6 days. She was united in marriage to Tom Bradley about 1872, who passed away about two years later. She married S. S. Hemecker May 9, 1880 and he lived only one year. In 1888 she was united in marriage to J. R. Harrell, who preceded her in death nine years. She was converted early in life and joined the Presbyterian church at Bethlehem, near Rocky Comfort, but later united with the Prosperity Baptist church at Rocky Comfort. After she moved to Wheaton a few years ago she transferred her membership to the First Baptist church of Wheaton where she was a devoted member at the time of her death. "Aunt Becca", as she was known to her neighbors and friends has spent most of her life in and near Wheaton and had a wide circle of friends who will miss her greatly. Although she had no children of her own, she was a "mother" to many and loved to serve those of her loved ones who from time to time came to visit her and always met with a warm welcome at her door. She loved her church and home and was always ready to serve her church and community. Funeral services are being conducted today, Thursday, March 23, by Rev. Chas. Vanzandt. Burial will be made in the Corsicana cemetery under the direction of Belka Funeral Home. - Obit for Rebecca's husband Joseph: Joseph P. Harrell one of the communities oldest settlers and best citizen died at his home west of here Saturday 29, 1923 at the age of 75 years and 5 months. In 1873 he was married to Nancy Lamberson and to this union was born one son, John Lee, who died several years ago. He was later married to Rebecca Hinecker who survives him. He had been in poor health for some years suffering from rheumatism and had made several trips to the west in hope of being benefited. He is survived by his wife and two brothers, Charley and Chart Howerton and was a brother of Alex Howerton who died in Oklahoma a few weeks ago. Otto Howerton of Purdy, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Cassville Republican, July 5, 1928 - Charlie Howerton passed away Friday, June 29, at about 2 o'clock at his home three miles east of Wheaton. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon, July 1, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. C. M. Smith of Exeter. Burial took place in the Corsicana cemetery under the direction of the L. H. Blankenship Undertaking company of Purdy. Mrs. Howerton passed away 27 years ago. One son died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Ollie Cartwright of Wheaton and one son, Otto Howerton of Purdy survive him. Three brothers and two sisters survive him. Lee Howerton of Purdy, MO was the informant. The cause of death was given as old age. Emily Catherine (Fly) Howerton was not the daughter of Elizabeth Sooter. She was the daughter of Asher Pipkin Fly and Marilla Elizabeth Cantrell. Asher was my 3rd great grandfather. - Cassville Republican, April 11, 1912 - Emily Catherine Howerton, widow of the late Rufus Howerton, at her home 3 miles east of Wheaton, Missouri, departed this life after an illness of 5 days, from a stroke of paralysis aided by old age. "Aunt Cath", as she was familiarly known in this part of the country, was an old pioneer settler here on Shoal Creek having lived here since childhood, the daughter of Asher P. Fly. She was born in Tennessee, May 5, 1830 and died April 6, 1912, being 81 years, 11 months and 1 day old. She was united in marriage with Rufus Howerton, September 17, 1850 and is the mother of 10 children, 7 boys and 3 girls, two of whom have preceded her to the world beyond, Columbus Howerton and Columbia A. Hackwith, the living are: G. J. Howerton of Granby, W. M. Howerton of Round Rock, Texas, Samantha Lansdown, Sarah Rogers, J. A., Charter, Charles and Leodidas Howerton of this vicinity. She leaves 2 brothers and 3 sisters and about 33 grandchildren to mourn her loss, but should not sorrow as those who have no hope for she leaves the comforting testimony behind. Her last words were "I am going home" (to her daughter) and calmly and peacefully fell asleep and passed away without a struggle. She had lived a religious life since the year 1849 having joined the M. E. Church in that year but of late years had held to the Church of God. The funeral services were held at the school house at Corsicana, conducted by Rev. Mark Combs after which the remains were laid to rest in the Corsicana cemetery to await the judgment day. Research Note: His name was William R. Jefferies. - The bio in Goodspeed's History of Barry Co. for William and Clara's son Dr. Thomas H. Jefferies gives this information for William: Thomas H. Jefferies, the oldest practicing physician and surgeon of Monett, MO, was born in 1837 in Clinton Co., KY, and is a son of William and Clara (Lawson) Jefferies. William Jefferies was of English descent, and was born in TN in 1812. He resided in his native state until after his marriage, when he removed to Clinton Co., KY, where he resided until 1856. He then removed to Benton Co., AR, thence in 1863 to Lawrence Co., MO, coming to Barry Co. three years later. Here he spent the remainder of his life, dying in 1869. His wife was born in TN in 1813, and is still living. The Callaway undertakers of Monett had charge of the remains. Mr. Long was born in 1848 at Purdy and was the son of John and Lavina Long. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Joe McCormick, east of Monett, died several years ago. He is probably buried in Corsicana Cemetery with his wife Nancy Matilda Fly. - Ted Roller's comments: I had told Jack Fly that the stone did not have a body under it using dousing rods. We followed up. Loren Roden knew that there were some CW soldiers found at Clio and he ordered a stone near Old Bob Town where James was known to live last with his wife. He had it placed where it stands as is, as a memory to James. I think this is just as good a placement as Corsicana as I have no proof otherwise. Jack Fly and Nancy are close friends and may have started the story further. The James Roden lived at Bethel area also and could be buried there? Someone may have proof of a burial at Corsicana?? He lived near Corsicana after the CW on 40 acres. I have the abstract. - Cassville Republican, May 11, 1899 - James Roden died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Samuel Bailie, in Mountain township. Born in Giles Co., Tennessee, he came to Barry County in the 1840's. He married three times. His first wife was a sister of Asher Fly of Jenkins, by whom he had five children. His second wife died on the Gasconade shortly after giving birth to twins. The babies were given to a neighbor woman and Mr. Roden went to war. A few years ago he looked up his twins. (Howerton) Crawford on July 2, 1882 in Barry Co., MO. - Wheaton Journal, June 27, 1929 - James K. Rodgers, better known as Uncle Jim Rodgers was born April 3, 1846, near Corsicana, Mo., and died Monday morning June 24, 1929 at his home on the same place where he was born, at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 21 days. He was twice married and to these unions there were six boys and two girls of these four boys were born to the first union and two boys and two girls were born to the second union. All were present except two, Minnie Cowherd, Camberi?lla, CA, and Elmer Rodgers of Fairview, who was away and could not be located. Those present were: John, Jesse, Ed, Clarence, and Bertha Rodgers and Orpha Metz. There is but one sister surviving, Mrs. Sarah Overton of Wheaton. He united with the Methodist Church when but a young man and was a constant believer in the Faith until death. Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday, June 25 by Rev. Research Note: Usual residence was McDowell, Barry Co., MO. He was the son of Walter and Merle (Arthur) Scott. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1954, serving during the Korean Conflict. On November 15, 1956, he was united in marriage to Wilda Taggs in Brookfield, Missouri. He was a farmer for most of his life in Iowa before moving to McDowell in 1970. Mr. Scott had a passion for horses and driving his mules. He was also well known for breaking, training and shoeing. Mr. Scott was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Cassville and the Monett American Legion Post 91. Research Note: Cassville Republican, August 12, 1909 - James Swindle, one of Barry County's oldest and most highly respected citizens, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. S. Overton at Corsicana, Monday, August 2, at the advanced age of 86 years, 9 months and two days. Funeral services were held Tuesday and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery at Corsicana near where he had lived for more than half a century. James Swindle was born at Linden, Perry County, Tenn., August 30, 1822. He came to Missouri in 1851 and located at what is now Rocky Comfort where for two years he worked as a blacksmith. In 1853 he moved to Pogues Creek and in the same year was married to Miss Eliza Fly. To them were born three sons, John, Lafayette and George, and two daughters, Martha J. Parks of Washington and Eliza A. Overton, wife of Robert Overton of Corsicana. Mrs. Swindle died in 1863. In 1865 he married Mrs. Elizabeth J. Davidson of Lawrence County. To this union were born one son, J. A., and two daughters, Nancy A., wife of Dr. O. S. Overton, and Mary F., wife of J. K. Holmes of Rocky Comfort. Mr. Swindle's second wife died February 28, 1904, since which time he has made his home with his children, living most of the time at Corsicana with his daughter, Mrs. O. S. Overton. Always having been actively engaged at some vocation, he could not be contented, even in his last days, to be without something to do and had for some time conducted a small store at Corsicana. James Swindle was a man of Christian character, a man of high ideals and his worth and the influence of his life is evinced by the noble family he reared to be our country's most useful citizens. He was born October 31, 1854. Age seventy-five years, five months and eighteen days. In July 1874, he was married to Fannie Carson. To this union thirteen children were born, 8 of whom survive, who are: Mrs. S. M. Clarkson and Mrs. Edmond Mason, Mrs. C. A. Wilkerson, and Archie Swindle, all of Southern California; Ogle Swindle of Gerlach, Nevada, Mrs. Kenneth Gordon of Wheaton; Raymond Swindle of Reed Springs, and Clara Swindle of Springfield. There are sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, George Swindle of Fairview, Mo., Lafayette Swindle of Hollywood, Calif., and Abe Swindle of Santa Anna, Calif.; three sisters. Mrs. Martha Parks of Sumas, Wash., Mrs. J. K. Holmes of Wheaton, Mo., and Mrs. O. S. Overton of Purdy, Mo., and one step sister, Mrs. Sara Garrison of Purdy, Mo. Mr. Swindle united with the Christian church at the age of 18 years. He graduated from the University of Columbia, Missouri, in 1881, and has devoted his entire life since that time to the teaching profession. He was one of the pioneer teachers of this part of the state. He founded the old Swindle College school in 1882 and taught there for many years. It has often been said that Southwest Missouri owes more to him for the progress of education than to any one man. He had life certificates from three states, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. Many of his students are still living and express their appreciation of the great service he rendered them. At the funeral service, Attorney Jake Davis, a student of his in former years, asked all of the former students present to stand. More than thirty were present. Besides his children, brothers and sisters he leaves a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Wheaton, on Sunday afternoon, April 20, conducted by Rev. Chas. Vanzandt. Mr. Swindle will build a dwelling, it is said, near Swindle College. - Cassville Republican, Aug. 7, 1919 - Prof. John Swindle attended the school board and teachers' convention here last week. Prof. Swindle will teach mathematics in the Wheaton school this year. For the past two years he has been living on his farm on James River. - May 4, 1916, Cassville Republican - Obit for son Sherman who is probably buried here: Sherman Swindle Drowned: Sherman Swindle, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Swindle of near Wheaton, was drowned, April 20, 1916, while trying to cross Buffalo Creek near his home at Dear, Newton County, Ark. Sherman had lived at Deer for about four years. On the morning of April 20 he started to cross the Buffalo river on horseback and was drowned in the stream which was high. the horse was found the same day but Sherman's body was not found until the eight day. He body was interred April 27. He was born May 18, 1877. He had served three years in the Philippines and had traveled around the world. He leaves father, mother, three brothers and five sisters. A brother, Ogle, is at Gerlach, Nev., Archie is at Davis, Calif., a sister, Mrs. M. S. Clarksen is at San Diego, and another, Mrs. Edward Stillman is at Riverside, Calif. The other brothers and sisters are yet at home. There are photos posted there of George Tarvin. - George Washington Tarvin was born June 12, 1813 in Fleming Co., Kentucky, the third child of George Tarvin, the second by his second wife, Keziah Harmon, and a twin to his brother Beachem Rhodes. He married first Dec. 10, 1835, Martha Jane Mitchell, possibly in Ohio. (Their first two children were born in Adams Co., Ohio.) They had five children. He moved his family about 1839 to Indiana, first to Putnam Co., then settling in Vigo Co., Indiana. The family appears in the 1840 Census of Vigo Co. George purchased 40 acres of farm land in Vigo Co. on May 27, 1841. After Martha's death in 1843, George married second Apr. 2, 1846, Amelia Jane Bowles in Vigo Co., Indiana. They had seven children. About 1873, George moved his family to Barry Co., Missouri. Mr. Weeks had engaged in farming in the Corsicana community most of his life. He was born February 4, 1850 in Memphis, Tennessee, and came to Barry county at the age of 21. He lived in the Corsicana community until nine years ago when he moved to Exeter to live with his daughter. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Lewis, Exeter, Mrs. Mamie Spencer, Cabool, and Mrs. Montie Reese, Melrose, Colorado; two sons, A. M. Weeks, Purdy, and Arthur Weeks, Tulride, Colorado; 57 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. His wife and five children, John, Oscar, Lloyd, Maude and Mabel, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Exeter Baptist church, with the Rev. Charles Bowers, Monett, officiating and with Rev. Charles Vanzandt, Exeter, assisting. Research Note: D. E. Wells first married Stella "Ann" Patton on Sept. 20, 1909 in Newton Co., MO. D. E. Wells, age 40 married second Mary Pearl Finley (Finley a married name), age 31 on Sept. 18, 1922 in McDonald Co., MO. - Cassville Republican, July 2, 1942 - Dock Wells of Purdy R. F. D., in the Wheaton community, died Tuesday, June 30, at the age of 63 years. He is survived by his widow, Pearl Wells, one son, Charley Wells, Purdy; a daughter Mrs. Edna Enlow, of Monett; and a step-son, Claud Finley of Purdy. Funeral services are being held this afternoon Thursday, at the Munsey Chapel, north of Wheaton. Burial will be in the Corsicana cemetery, with the Koon Undertakers of Cassville in charge. Mr. Wells was born in Lee county, Va., but had lived in this county most all of his life. Death was due to a heart attack. Her father was given as John Hart and her mother was Mary (Enlow) Hart, born in TN.
