Research Note: This stone is for Campbell Archie Autry who died Nov. 17, 1915. Civil War Veteran, 1890 Census, U. S. County Home Guards. He married Sarah Shaw and is believed to have been a brother of Silas McDonald Autry who is buried at Rocky Comfort. - Cassville Republican, November 25, 1915 - Campbell A. Autry one of the prominent and substantial farmers of Corsicana, passes away at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 17, of kidney trouble. Mr. Autry had lived in this county for about 47 years, having come to Barry County from Greene County where he was born. A few years after coming to the county he was married to Miss Sarah Shaw and located on a farm near Corsicana and had reared his family and continued to spend his declining years where he had met and successfully overcome the hardships of building for himself and family a home in the early seventies. He was the father of ten children, Mrs. Ida Nichols, Kansas City, Charles, Ft Worth, Tex., Will, Pierce City, George of Oklahoma, Mrs. Ora Thompson and Floyd Autry of Exeter, Thomas and Henry and Mrs. Henry Goetz of Corsicana and Mrs. Will Rice of Wheaton. He had long been a faithful member of the Baptist church was a man of sterling integrity, firm in his convictions of what was right and one of the county's good citizens. He was of that type of sturdy manhood, devoted to principle sincere and earnest in nature, which characterized many of the early settlers of this county to whom we are deeply indebted. Such men of deep and honest convictions have been the very foundation of our government. In his passing the county has lost a valuable citizen. Mr. Autry was a member of the Masonic fraternity and after the funeral sermon by Rev. C. M. Smith, his body was laid to rest with the honors of that order. The funeral services were conducted at Corsicana and interment made in the cemetery there. - September 7, 1916, Cassville Republican - Hazel Dell: Austin Thompson, son-in-law of the late Campbell Autry, bought 40 acres of land from Bert Smith near Hazel Dell and moved to the same last week. - Aug. 31, 1916, Cassville Republican - Autry Estate Administered Upon: W. O. Autry has been appointed by Probate Judge C. M. Landis, administrator of the estate of the late Campbell Autry. The administrator made a $1,500 bond which was approved. Blankenship was the informant. - Cassville Republican, September 3, 1942 - PIONEER RESIDENT DIES - Son Of Early Miller At Cassville and Corsicana - Monett, MO - J. E. Blankenship, 85, father of L. H. Blankenship of Monett, died Wednesday evening, August 26, at 8:30 of uremic poisoning. Mr. Blankenship was born May 17, 1857, in Gadfly, Missouri (now Corsicana), son of one of the pioneer families of this section of the county. His father L. Jackson Blankenship, came to Missouri from Tennessee more than a 100 years ago, founded and operated one of the few carding machines and flour mills in Southwest Missouri. At that time Gadfly and Cassville were the only towns in Barry County. He also served on the committee which located and superintended the building of the first court house in Barry County. One of the ten children, Mr. Blankenship succeeded his father in business and was a prominent miller and stock farmer until the time of his retirement. Mrs. Blankenship preceded her husband in death by 20 years. Since her death in 1922, Mr. Blankenship had made his home in Purdy, Mo., until six months ago when he came to Monett. He is survived by two sons, L. H. Blankenship, Monett and E. H. Blankenship, Kansas City; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Hagan, Enid, Okla., and Mrs. Myrtle Russell, Cassville, Mo., one brother Grant Blankenship, Adrian, Mo., one sister, Mrs. P.E. Horine, Cassville, Mo., eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Christian church at Purdy, conducted by Rev. SSW: Martha - Research Note: He was the son of Jeremiah Wilkinson and Naomi Moncey or Muncy. - From a letter Betty Lamberson received in 1979 from Edith Salyer, a daughter, of Emma Laura Blankenship: Lorenzo Jackson Blankenship (born April 4, 1820) married Martha Garrison (born May 1, 1830) in Virginia. They came to Missouri and located on Flat Creek north of Cassville. He was a carpenter and Brick Mason. He had a mill and a carding machine there. While there he also built the first Courthouse in Cassville. Mary, born in 1851, and Minerva born 1853, were born there. Minerva died and was buried here. (Cassville) Then they moved to Corsicana where he bought a farm and built a Mill, had a cotton gin and a carding Machine. He built an addition to a log cabin and lived there while the big house was being built. Evidently it was built in the 1860's for my Mother Emma was born in it December 3, 1872. She married there in 1890. Grandmother died in November 1897, Grandfather couldn't carry on alone as he had lost his hearing so the children took turns living with him. He died October 11, 1901. Elihu and family were living with him at that time and they stayed for a while. The original house did not burn until after the property was sold. Grandfather was considered a very prosperous man. Grandmother had the first cook stove and the first sewing machine in that part of the country and people would come for miles to see them. but think what a life she had with a baby every two years and all that work! The other children of Lorenzo and Martha are: William Alonzo b. 1835, Jacob Elihu born 1857, The baby born 1858, Virginia Alice born 1860, John Right ( Rite?) born 1862, Lorenzo Dow born 1864, Ulysses Grant born 1866, Martha Arminta born 1868, Emma Laura born 1872. The first Courthouse in Cassville was built of brick by Lorenzo Blankenship and it was destroyed during the Civil War. A picture of this Courthouse is featured on the cover of the 1888 Goodspeed's History of Barry County, reprinted by Emory Melton. Lorenzo also built a hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, it is thought to be on one of the lower streets and is tri-cornered. Edith Salyer - Goodspeed's 1888 History: The business interests of Corsicana in 1870 were represented by L. J. Blankenship's carding mill, known as the "White Machine House". - Bio: Lorenzo J. Blankenship was born in Lee County, VA on Apr. 4, 1820 and is a son of Wilkinson and Naomi (Moncey) Blankenship. Wilkinson Blankenship was born in Russell Co., VA in 1796 and is a son of Arthur Blankenship, a native of NC, who immigrated to VA. The latter was familiar with many of the scenes of the Revolutionary War. He was a farmer, miller, blacksmith, and tanner, and died after the close of the Civil War in Lee County, VA, leaving a very large estate. Wilkinson Blankenship was married in VA. He and wife were born in the same house, there being but six months difference in their ages. They became the parents of several children, five of whom grew to maturity. In 1840, Wilkinson Blankenship came with his family to MO, locating in Polk County. He was a farmer and brick layer. He died in Montgomery County, MO, in 1868, and his wife died in 1885, aged 85 years. Lorenzo J. Blankenship is a natural mechanic, and has never failed in any of his mechanical undertakings. He made his start in life as a plasterer and brick layer, at which he became very proficient. He erected the first brick house in Polk County, MO in 1842. His first speculation was in the Christian County carding and milling establishment, but as he had a partner addicted to the use of strong drink, he soon became dissatisfied, and sold his share in the business and came to Barry County, MO. Here, in 1851, he entered into the carding business near Cassville, erecting his own buildings. He ran a successful business for four years, when he sold out and came to his present location at Corsicana, and again engaged in the milling and carding industry. He put up the first smut-mill in the county. During his life he has built five carding machines, three mills and owned thousands of acres of land, and although he has done business to the amount of several thousands of dollars, he has never asked for credit. He built the first hotel in Eureka Springs, AR in the years 1880-81. It is of a V shape, four stories high, and at present occupied by the Eureka Bank, Adams Express office, law office, telegraph office, etc. On his farm he has five large fish ponds, well stocked with German carp. In 1850 Mr. Blankenship was united in marriage with Martha Garrison, a native of TN, and to them have been born eight children who are still living, viz: Mary L. (Mrs. John McNatt), Elihu, Alice (Mrs. H. R. Williams), John R., Dow, U.S.G., Arminta (Mrs. Lafayette Swindle) and Emma. Mr. Blankenship is a man of perfect habits, and he and family are highly respected by all who know them. Research Note: William W. Coatney was born in 1840 in Newton County, Missouri. He was the son of James W. and Nancy Ann Coatney. His family lived in Newton and Barry Counties during his early life. William married Sarah Ellen Panel March 3, 1862 in Barry County, Missouri. They divorced in September 1868. Their children were: James C., William, John and Sarah Ellen "Nellie" Coatney. William married Nancy J. Morrison about 1869. Their children were: Roxana, Joseph, Nancy, Robert, Frank, Burton and Brother Coatney. - Webb City Sentinel, July 30, 1903 - William Coatney Sr., father of William Coatney of this city was killed at Monett by a switch engine July 28, 1903. Dancy, Grenola, Kansas, 1928) at p. 20. - Catherine Dancy was the tenth child of Jesse James Dancy and Rebecca C. Davis, born in Manchester, Clay county, Ky., Aug. 18, 1851. She lived with her parents, her short life ended at the age of 23 years. She died June 1, 1874, about three months before her brother James. They are buried side by side in the Dancy lot in Corsicanna, Barry County, Mo. She never married. - On September 18, 1870, 19-year-old Catherine Dancy was in Corsicana, Missouri when she wrote a letter to her older brother, William H. Dancy, and his wife, Frances S. Servis, then living in Johnson County, Nebraska, to inform them of the death of their father, Jesse James Dancy: "Dear Brother and Sister: It is with pleasure that I write you, but sorrow to inform you of father's death, that we 3 are left alone [mother Rebecca, brother James and Catherine]. Father died the 6th of this month. We had two doctors and one of them said it was a kidney disease. He only lived five days after he was taken sick. We still live here and keep as straight as we can. James and me have been very sick. I am all right again; James is better. George Abbott lives in sight of us and he hasn't never been inside of the house but once since father's death and come to borrow a horse. James and me both sick and no one but mother to do anything. He never come about the place. I will give the price list: Flour is from $2.60 to $3 per hundred; bacon 18 cents per pound. Potatoes and corn plenty. We have 18 acres of pretty good corn, hogs enough to make our meat, potatoes enough, one good milk cow and calf, one two year old heifer, one team of horses, one yearling colt and one suckling colt, and that is all we got in this wide world. Research Note: The following is from Homer Eiler's Our Ancestors, A Brief Record of These Families: Dancy Servis Bassett Davis Holman Vannoy (Printed and published by James S. Dancy, Grenola, Kansas, 1928) at page 7: - Dr. Jesse James Dancy was born on June 4, 1804 near the Reddies River, Wilkes County, North Carolina, the son of Edward J. Dancy (1769-1859) and his wife Amelia Vannoy (1781-1858). On December 9, 1831 Dr. Dancy married Rebecca C. Davis in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Rebecca was the daughter of Ephraim Davis (c1759-1844) and his wife Elizabeth Holman (c1770-1845). Dr. Jesse J. Dancy was a physician and a justice of the peace in Barry County, Missouri. From old letters written by our ancestor Jesse Dancy, and in the possession of Ida Brower of Vinita, Okla., we infer his positive stand against the Slavery question that was then at fever heat in the South. Because of this stand we next find him at the beginning of the Civil War, in Fulton County, Illinois, joining his son William and daughter Irene with their families, who had lately moved to Ohio. Shortly after the close of the war we find him in Barry County, Mo., living near Corsicana. The following children going with him: Irene, who had married George Snyder, Lucinda Ann, Nickatira, James W. and Katira. They left the only two other children, William and James, living in Fulton County, as Elizabeth Jane (Turner) had died in 1863 near Lewistown. Here, Jesse and family lived until his death Sept. 6, 1870, and he is buried in the Dancy burial lot in Corsicana cemetery. Sanders of Cassville, appeared in the July issue of "The Ozarks Mountaineer." - Silas Davis did some blacksmithing, but his main business was making things of wood which comprised a long list of articles. Many things were made of wood then that are now made only of metal, such as hames, shoe lasts, and wagon spindles. Maybe son of Jackson and Mary Dickson. - Cassville Republican, May 22, 1941 - TAKES OWN LIFE - Former Wheaton Citizen Slashes Throat With Knife: Using a pocket knife with which he slashed his throat, William Dickson took his own life Thursday morning, May 15, at his home in Granby. Mr. Dickson’s age was given as 73 years. He had moved from Wheaton to Granby about three years ago. A number of years ago he was in business at Corsicana. Poor health in recent months has been given as the cause for his rash act. Mrs. Dickson is said to have stated that Mr. Dickson had said several times since his health failed that he was going to end it all. Mrs. Dickson said she missed her husband from the house and found his body afterward beneath the back porch of the house. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in Wheaton. Mr. Dickson made the race for the nomination of County Assessor on the Republican ticket. Later he served for a few years as a guard at the State Prison. He was a good citizen. Surviving of his immediate family are: his widow and six children. The children are Ralph, Norman, and Ruby of Wheaton; Mrs. Hugh Bencher of Granby, Billy Dickson, and Mrs. Ralph McKinley who are at Norfolk, Va. - Cassville Republican, July 11, 1918 - Mr. and Mrs. J. SSW: Marilla - Research Note: He was a son of Jeremiah Fly and Zilpha Pipkin. He was the husband of Marilla Elizabeth Cantrell and Minerva Ann Doty. - Obit: The subject of this notice was born in Murray county, Tennessee, August 9, 1804. United in the bonds of matrimony November 28, 1825 and migrated to the State of Arkansas in 1833 and thence to Barry county, Missouri, and settled on Shoal Creek where he resided until his death. He professed religion and joined the Methodist Church about the year 1840 and in the separation of 1844 became a member of the M. E. Church, South, of which he was a consistent member until his death, December 22, 1868. Brother A. P. Fly was a man of extraordinary mind and especially in reference to the doctrine and discipline of the Church to which he belonged. He was a man of dauntless courage, yet humble, and affable and lamb-like. His life was a living epistle of Christianity, known and read of all men with whom he had intercourse. The subject of religion was his usual topic of conversation. He was confined to his bed only little over a fortnight. The last place he ever attended was the second quarterly meeting held by Bro. H. W. Webster. He partook of the sacrament with humility and tearful gratitude. On his return home he sought his chamber, seemingly to lie down to die. I called on Bro. Fly during his illness and felt very loth to leave him, and said "Bro. Fly, I feel reluctant to leave you." He replied instantly, "Go on, Bro. Wright and preach and do your duty and pay no attention to me, for I have nothing to fear. God is with me and my way is clear." Thus he continued until his death. SSW: Asher Fly - Research Note: Obit: Mrs. Marilly Elizabeth Fly, daughter of John and Sarah Cantrell, was born in South Carolina on December 18, 1804. When she was young her parents moved to Warren County, Tennessee, where she was married to Asher P. Fly, on the 28th of November, 1825. They moved to Green County, Arkansas in 1833, and from there to Shoal Creek, Barry County, Missouri in 1837, where she died on the 25th day of March, 1860. Jack Fly added: There is no headstone and has not been one for 40 years or more. The date of death may not right for Zilpha (1843). Listed on the 1840 census Jeremiah is in the home of his youngest son Elisha. They arrived in Barry county between 1836 -40. Zilpha (or a woman in her age bracket) is not listed in the 1840 Barry County census as living with any of the Fly families. It would only make sense that she would have been living with her husband in the home of their son. Zilpha either died before 1840 or was missed by the census taker. Research Note: Daughter of Benajah Gentry and Eliza Murrell, both buried at Corsicana. - Cassville Republican May 24, 1928 - Eliza Jane Gentry was born June 24, 1849, being one of a family of eleven children all of whom have preceded her to the great beyond. She was married to Samuel H. Francis March 15, 1867. To this union were born three children, two having died in infancy. She is survived by one son, W. S. (William Sherman) Francis of Pioneer, three grandchildren, M. F. Francis of Wheaton, L. H. Francis of Monett, and Velma at home, two great grandchildren of Wheaton and a number of relatives and friends who mourn her departure, the companion Samuel H. Francis having preceded her March 23, 1912. She was stricken down June 7th, 1927, died at the family home at Pioneer Tuesday, May 15, 1928, being 78 years, 10 months and 21 days old. Funeral services were conducted at the Pioneer Union church by Rev. Luther Carlin and interment made in Corsicana cemetery under the direction of the Pogue Undertaking Service. - Irma E. Gentry's Note: Have now found that Aunt Jane (Eliza Jane Gentry) and Samuel Francis were buried east of her parents in Corsicana Cem., with one grave (unoccupied) separation between them. There is no marker. It could probably be found in the corner where many of the stones knocked down by cattle are piled up. | Obit Phyllis Long |
