Later she married Olen Painter, with whom she raised children and cattle until he passed away in 1993. Edna grew up and graduated from high school in Cassville. She worked at the Barry County Courthouse before beginning her long career as the secretary to the superintendent of Cassville R-IV Schools. She was known for her record-setting (over 100 wpm) error-free typing skills, having typed numerous dissertations. She also worked for several years at Able 2 Products, helping it grow from its meager beginnings to the successful industry it became. For many years she enjoyed raising beef cattle on the farm she built with Olen. Inscription: "Wife of John Douglas Painter" - Research Note: Beverly says she was the daughter of Richard Jackson Davenport and Louisa Ann Garner, probably correct. Others say her mother was Richard’s second wife Armelda Jane Slaughter. Her tombstone had been buried beneath the surface at her grave site for years, was located in July 1996 and brought to view. It has her name, and dates 1867-1902. She is buried beside the road, that was built after her burial in 1902. There is Davenport and VanDorn children buried in the same locality. Her obituary was in the Cassville Republican, Oct. 9, 1902. There were two write ups about her death. One also telling of an infant babe. - Cassville Republican, Oct. 9, 1902 - Mrs. Doug Painter, north of Cassville, died Saturday and was buried at the Corinth Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Brattin. - Mrs. Doug Painter died Saturday morning at her home north of town. Burial was made in the Corinth Cemetery. Services conducted by Rev. Brattin. The deceased leaves a husband and several children, one an infant babe. - Aug. 12, 1897, Cassville Republican - Stony Point News: J. D. Research Note: Son of John Painter and Mary Fowler. He has a home made tombstone, that did not come out correct in the making, so it is turned upside down in the cemetery. His grandson, Charles Glen Painter, is buried by his side. He was buried Mar. 5, 1933. Beverly posted Feb. 1861 as the birth date, the stone reads otherwise. Beverly states that his obit states he was born 1859. She also stated that the old rock for his marker was removed. She said that the 1900 census has his birth date as Feb. 1861, born in AR. His wife was Elizabeth Mahala (Davenport) Painter and they married March 31,1859. Using the death date given - no death certificate was registered with a Barry County death. - June 6, 1908, Cassville Democrat - For Assault and Battery: Lon and Bill James and Press Beal were arrested Monday, on a charge of having committed assault upon the person Douglas Painter, all living northwest of town, Sunday. Darla's Note: Information I had came from Betty Chigbrow: Elizabeth's husband was Andrew Jackson Phillips born Nov. 16, 1840 and died April 6, 1929 in Berryville, AR, buried in the Corinth Cemetery. They were married June 8, 1858 in Benton, Polk Co., TN. Also, these are newspaper items of Elizabeth's death. - Butler Hollow News - Mrs. A. J. Phillips died Wednesday Jan. 24 and was laid to rest Jan. 25 at Corinth Cemetery. She leaves a husband, one son and four daughters and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of our community. - February 8, 1912, Thursday, Cassville Republican - Muncey News: Mrs. Andy Phillips died the 24 and was buried the 25 in the Huff Cemetery. The bereaved family have our sympathy. - Since her stone is in Corinth and since Andrew was buried at Corinth and the family would have brought him from Berryville, it is likely that Elizabeth is buried in Corinth, too, and not Munsey as the death certificate reports. Since Corinth was once called the Huff Cemetery and her maiden name was Huff she probably was buried near family. The deceased has been in poor health for some time. She was 81 years, 10 months and 10 days old. She had been twice married. She leaves four sons and one daughter. They are George and Will Porter and Mrs. J. A. Reed of Pasley and Mr. Tankersly of Seligman and a Mr. Tankersly of Ft. Smith, Ark. Funeral services in charge of Rev. J. T. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey reside one-half mile north of town and are good people and their many friends are grieved to hear of this sad occurrence and sincerely sympathize with them in this sad hour of trouble. - Washburn News: Julia Ramsey, the little 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ramsey died at the home of her parents, Friday night, Oct. 4, from the effects of a burn. In March 1893, she and Henry Ramsey were united in marriage and to this union were born ten children, eight of whom with the husband survive her. They are Raymond of near Butterfield, Clarence, Ben, John and Frank at home and Ike of Denver, CO, Mrs. Susie Bennett and Mrs. Sallie Cook of Picher, OK. She was a granddaughter of the late Eliza Talbert who resided in Cassville many years. About sixteen years ago she professed faith in Christ and united with the Corinth Baptist church and her last words as death struck her were “sweet Jesus”. Funeral services were held at the home conducted by Rev. Melvin Henson at 10:30 Sunday morning and interment made in the Corinth Cemetery south of Cassville, the funeral being in charge of the Horine-Koon Undertaking establishment. Parents not named. - Cassville Republican, December 26, 1912 - Drops Dead: Without a moments warning Mrs. Malissie E. Reynolds, wife of Wm. Reynolds, dropped dead at her home, about 4 miles south of Cassville, Saturday about one o'clock of heart failure. Mrs. Reynolds had been afflicted with dropsy for a number of years but had always been able to attend to her household duties. She appeared to be in her usual health Saturday morning and was doing her usual work when she dropped over dead. Her sudden death was a great surprise to everybody. Malissie E. Reynolds (Tade) was 72 years, 6 months and 4 days of age and was born in Clark County, Illinois. She was married to Wm. Reynolds in 1854, December 21, and the day of her death marked the 58th anniversary of their marriage. To this union were born 8 children, 4 of whom are living. The deceased made a confession in Christ when 30 years of age and joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Pasley. She was a woman highly respected and loved by the citizens of her community. The funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. Coons of Cassville at the Corinth Baptist Church in the presence of a large number of friends and neighbors. Research Note: He was the son of Matt B. and Opal Jessie Sims. He attended Horner Grade School, graduated Cassville High School in 1956 where he served as his Senior Class President. He went on to earn a college degree in mathematics from Southwest Missouri State (SMS), and served as 1st Lieutenant in the US Army from 1962 to 1965. On March 30, 1963, Larry married his grade school sweetheart, Margaret Helen Turner, and they shared 56 years of marriage. They raised a son and a daughter in Derby, Kansas where they were lifelong residents. Larry worked for Coleman Company for 10 years before establishing a second career as the facilities engineer for Boeing Aircraft. Following his retirement from professional life, Larry returned to his roots he knew as a child; working with cattle, growing an abundant vegetable garden, and serving as a mentor and friend in the farming community in Derby, Kansas. Larry was known for his mentorship, service in the community, and friendly nature. He served on the Planning Commission of Derby, Kansas and was a member of the Heartland Church of Christ in Wichita. Larry is preceded in death by his father, Matt B. Sims; mother, Opal Jessie Sims (Hopkins); brothers Matt Bryant Sims; Morris Sims; and Robert Sims. Graveside service at Corinth Cemetery. She was born July 16th, 1893 and passed away Nov. 4th 1927. On Sept. 12, 1909, she was married to James J. Smalley of near Cassville, to which this union two daughters were born, who survive and are, Larayne and Margaret. At the age of thirty, she was converted during a meeting conducted at Aurora, Mo., by Rev. Goodnight, uniting with the M.P. church at that place. She bore her suffering patiently and everything possible was done in her behalf, but all efforts were in vain. In her efforts to regain her health, she went to Colorado and Arizona, but she failed to show much improvement. On various occasions she expressed herself as being willing and ready to answer the call from above and in some instances, said she would be glad to go. Impressive funeral services were conducted by Revs. Goodnight and Scott at the Corinth church, after which remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near her home, under the direction of Brandford’s Funeral Service. Among those from a distance that attended the services, were: Mr. and Mrs. Guy Dunn, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Turner, Mrs. Vadie Wagnon, Mrs. Emma McCullah, Miss Maggie Lear, Miss Jewel Nuvens, Mrs. Bennett and son, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Jacques and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Muench and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Mills, Mrs. Heath Berney Copeny, Mrs. Avery and family, Ren Scott and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bradley and family of Aurora., Mr. and Mrs. A Chann and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Orville Wisely of Wheaton, Mrs. Mintie Wallen, Fairland, Okla., Mrs. Virgil Newman, Webb City, Mrs. Mattie Baker and daughter of Monett, Mrs. Will Wheeler Hockerville, Oklahoma, Arthur Barner and children of Kansas City and Ora Hawood of Purdy. The deceased was a kind and loving character and will be sadly missed by her large number of relatives and friends of this community where she was born and raised and spent practically all of her life. In addition to her grief stricken husband and two daughters, she leaves her splendid father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Hefley and a brother, Frank Hefley of near this city. Her death certificate states that she was a widow, her father was James McCandless and her mother was Mary A. Williams. Will Smalley gave the information. Martha's father was named John not James - some people thought James and John were the same name. Jay McCandless added this, "Martha Jane (McCandless) Smalley was born in IL, the second child of John and Mary Ann (Williams) McCandless. She was born en-route from Kentucky to Arkansas where John McCandless was going to claim newly opened Indian lands." - Cassville Democrat, July 12, 1929 - Martha Jane McCandless-Smalley died at the home of her son, Will Smalley, on highway 44 southeast of Cassville, on July 2, 1929. She was stricken with paralysis about four weeks ago, and since that time was not able to talk to her friends. She was born in Illinois, Dec. 9, 1847, died at the age of 82 years, 6 months and nineteen days. She and Josiah A. Smalley were married Dec. 15, 1867. TO this union nine children were born, one dying in infancy and a daughter, Maggie Hayward, dying in 1920. Mrs. Smalley has been a member of the Christian church for 63 years. She is survived by her seven children, who are John of Nowata, Okla., Sam of Neosho, Mo., Jim of Hansen, Idaho, Will at home, Mary Steward of Berryville, Ark., Julia Dye of San Diego, Calif, and Cena Curry of Hansen Idaho. Her husband Josiah A. Smalley died March 8, 1924. Beside her children, she is survived by other relatives and a large circle of friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home of her son, Will Smalley, on Wednesday afternoon, July 3, 1929 by Chas Vanzandt. A quartet composed of Mrs. Pearl, Mrs. John Ray, and Chas. Willis and Clint Blythe, furnished special vocal selections. It had her daughter Joan on 1940 census, she was living with her sister and bro-in-law in Oregon. SSW: Mary D. - Research Note: Son of Joseph Stringer and Annie Burris. - Sherm was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Stringer, Sr. and Anna Burris Stringer; five brothers, Aaron, George, Bud, John, and Verlin Stringer; one sister, Dorothy Fairchild; and his son, David Earle Stringer. He was a World War II veteran and served in the 737th Tank Battalion under General George Patton. He participated in many battles including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and was honorably discharged following the end of the war. Sherm lived in Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked for City Products for 27 years. The company then transferred him to Lake City, Florida, where he eventually purchased the business and worked there until he retired in 1986. She was "Marion the Librarian" and taught story hour for many years, which was her most cherished position. Marion loved the Lord and her family. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and most recently attended Community Faith Chapel. While playing with a pairing knife she struck the point of the blade in her right eye. The wound was thought to be so serious that her local physician advised that she be taken to a specialist.
