About 1851 he moved to the Saint Joseph area of MO where his oldest brother Everhart was. In 1855 he moved to Barry Co. joining his sister Elmira (Antle) Hadley and her husband Henry. SSW: Margaret - Research Note: Son of Jacob F. and Sarah (Stepp) Antle. - Cassville Republican, December 24, 1914 - County Loses Excellent Citizen: Sidney Antle, a pioneer and well known citizen of near Exeter, passed into the sleep that knows no waking at this home Wednesday night, Dec. 16, 1914, of pneumonia. He was born in Kentucky, July 17, 1837, making him 77 years, 6 months and 29 days old. When 18 years old he moved with his parents to Barry County. The larger part of his remaining life was spent in this county. He was one of the citizens, most of whom have passed away, whose life history makes up the greater part of the history of this county. During the Civil War, he served as a soldier in the Confederate Army. His service was given to the company in charge of Captain James Montgomery. He was the father of four children. They are C. F. Antle of New Mexico, O. G. of near Exeter, A. F. and D. F. of Tulsa, Okla. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Logan of Eureka Springs, Ark., Dallas of near Wheaton and Mrs. Jas. Goostree of near Exeter and Mrs. Schuyler of Monett. Funeral service were conducted by Rev. E.W. Love Fridays at the Concord Church. Interment was made in the Concord Cemetery. The deceased had professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In his death the county and community in which he had lived so long has lost one good citizens. - Bio from Goodspeed's History of Barry Co.: Sidney Antle, an enterprising citizen of Barry County, Mo., is the eldest in a family of twelve children born to Jacob F. and Sarah (Stepp) Antle. Jacob F. Antle was born in Adair County, Ky., in 1813, in which county he was reared on a farm. He has always followed agricultural pursuits, and is now residing three miles north of Exeter. He was married in Kentucky in 1836, and resided there until coming to Missouri in 1851. He first located in the northwestern part of Missouri, and lived successively in Davies, DeKalb, Clinton and Buchanan Counties. In 1855 he came to Barry County and located where he now resides, and has since been very successfully engaged in farming. In politics he is a Democrat, and in religion is a Baptist. He wife was born about 1816, and is also a member of the Baptist Church. Sidney Antle was born in Russell County, Ky., in 1837, and remained on the farm with his parents until he was twenty-two years of age, when he began farming for himself. He has since followed agricultural pursuits, except one and a half years when he was engaged in blacksmithing at Mount Vernon, Mo. From 1862, until 1865 he served in the Confederate army in Company I, Eighth Missouri Infantry, and Company C, Fourteenth Missouri Cavalry. He was married in 1860 to Margaret J. Price, a native of the county and a daughter of Charles I. Price, who was killed in the war. Five children have blessed their union, vis.: Eva, Charles S., Oliver G., Arthur F. and Clarence M. He fell unconscious and probably would have died had he not been discovered at once by S. W. Beaver who was watering his horse at the creek. Beaver, joined by Dave Dingler and Henry Kerrick carried him to the City Hotel where he soon recovered consciousness. Research Note: Maybe daughter of John Ryan and Eliza Ramey. - Cassville Republican, Sept. 28, 1893 - Died: Sept 16th, 1893, Mrs. Martha Ellen Baker, age 26 years, 10 months, and 15 days: The deceased was born in Davis Co., MO, November 19th, 1866. She was married in 1883 and four little children were left to mourn her loss, and a father, mother and two brothers and one sister, but while God has seen fit to call darling Ella away from our embrace, we know that if faithful to the Lord we will be permitted to meet her around God's throne in heaven, and while it is hard to part with our friends we feel assured that our God does all things well. Dear Ella, called father and mother to her bedside and said she was dying. Her mother asked if she was prepared to go. She said everything was bright and clear. She next called her brother Willie. Oh, he is not here. Tell him to meet me in heaven. Then she says tell Johnny to meet me in heaven. Tell Betty, my dear sister, to meet me. She then bid us all good bye and called her little children and asked the blessing of God on them, and called for her dear husband. She became quite for a moment or two and then calling us back said she wasn't going to die. Oh, how, true those words were, for that a Christian never dies. May the blessing of almighty God be with the friends and relatives of the dear sister who is at rest. She was converted in 1882 and the remains were interred in the Concord Cemetery after the funeral sermon preached by Rev. Norman. SSW: Mary E. - Research Note: Cassville Democrat, Cassville, June 18, 1904- Death carried away a highly respected and old citizen in the person of Dennis Barnett, at his home, in Liberty township, June 12, age 87 years, a few months, and days. He was the father of 13 children, all living but two. He had been a member of the Baptist Church nearly all his life. His remains were laid to rest in Concord Cemetery. His aged wife survives him. One day later his son, Bevy Barnett, aged about 50 years old died of typhoid fever, leaving a wife and five children to mourn his death. He was a member of the C. P. Church and a splendid citizen. Research Note: Daughter of Charles O. Birkes and Maggie McQueen. - Cassville Democrat, August 11, 1917 - Ridgley: Ethel Birks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Birks, answered the final summons Friday evening, Aug. 3rd, 1917, after a brief illness of a complication of diseases. She was born May 7th, 1902, age 15 years, 2 months and 26 days. Besides a devoted father and mother, she leaves three loving sisters and two brothers. She was converted the day she died and help to sing two or three songs in her dying hour. Her last request was that her father and those she loved would seek and find Jesus as their friend. Solemn and impressive funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. James Brattin. Six of her girl friends acted as pall bearers namely: Rhoda Powell, Maulsic Harper, Pearl Creason, Ivy Brattin, Effie Reed and Clara England. The interment was made in Concord Cemetery, Saturday evening, August 4th. No more gentle unassuming and kind hearted girl was ever known in our vicinity, but our loss is her gain, and while she is gone, her influence still lives a blessed memory and a shinning lamp to guide the feet of those who knew her and today mourn her loss. Birkes, 90, Exeter route 1, who died at 11:30 pm Saturday at south Barry County Hospital, Cassville, where she had been admitted a few hours earlier, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ridgley Baptist Church, south of Wheaton. Mrs. Birkes was born Dec. 21, 1882, in the State of Virginia. She lived most of her life in Barry County and was a member of Ridgley Baptist Church. She married Charles O. Birkes March 8, 1899 and he died Nov 26, 1949. Died at his home Exeter, Mo., Jan. 3, 1930 age 81 years, and four days. Death was due to complications of diseases due to old age. He came to Missouri with his parents when a small boy. They settled near Capps Creek. Mr. Birkes was married to Sarah Elizabeth James, in 1870. She preceded him in death in September 1891, to this union six children were born, five of whom are now living. They are: Saphrona Patton, Wheaton, Mo., C. O. Birkes, Stark City, Mo., Eva M. Harrell, Della P. Dotson, Long Beach, Cal. And R. C. Birkes, who died Oct. 11, 1911. In 1897 he was married to Amelia C. Warren, who still survives him. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Amelia C. Birkes, one sister, Mrs. Melvian Ray, of Fairview, Mo., two sons, three daughters, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-one grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. This William would not have been born yet. The obit names his mother as Sarah Elizabeth James. - His wife was deceased and her name was Martha Patton. Son of Marion Birkes and Martha Jamison. Oras Birkes of Exeter, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Obit: William Riley Birkes, son of the late Marion and Elizabeth Birkes was born July 30, 1873 near Pierce City, Mo., and departed this life Nov. 18, 1949, at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 18 days. He was united in marriage to Martha Ann Patton Dec. 18, 1898, at the age of 25 years. To this union eight children were born, four of whom preceded him in death. His good wife also preceded him in death in May, 1913. He leaves four children to mourn his passing; Carl Birkes of Exeter, Oras Birkes of Ridgley, Mrs. Kate Garrison of Ridgley and Mrs. Claudena Young of Burlington, Colo., also one brother, Charlie Birkes of Exeter; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Harrell of Cassville and Mrs. Dela Dotson of California. 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. He was converted and united with the Ridgley Baptist church in November, 1939. He did not attend church regularly on account of his health. He was known as “Uncle Nap” to his many friends. He said no harm to anyone. He was living with his son, Oras at the time of his death. He will be missed in the home where he had lived most of the past 24 years, at our loss is his gain. We thank God that he was permitted a peaceful passing without pain. Funeral serviced were held at the Ridgley Baptist church Sunday afternoon, Nov. 20 by Chas. VanZandt and Hugh Higgs. Roller - JOHN BRATTIN DEAD - Passed to his reward, was the word that came over the wire Thursday, in regard to the death of John Franklin Brattin, who answered the beckon of the Angel of death at his home in Exeter, Dec. 29th, 1910, of an abscess of the stomach, aged 54 years, 11 months and 20 days. He had been in bad health for five years, and was first stricken with jaundice. He was a son of the late J.W. and Matilda Brattin, and a brother of Jos., L.D., Rev. J.T., and Reuben Brattin. He was born on Shoal Creek in this county and had lived most all of his life in this county. He was the father of 12 children, 10 of whom are living. His wife survives him. He was a member of the Exeter Baptist Church, and the funeral services were held there yesterday, Friday Dec 20, at 11 a.m., by Rev. C. M. Smith, after which the remains were laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery. He had been Constable of Exeter township, and was Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff O' Dwyer. Bowman of Exeter, MO was the informant on the death certificate. - Wheaton Journal, November 21, 1924 - EXETER CITIZEN COMMITS SUICIDE BY HANGING - Body Found Saturday Night. Act Was Apparently Committed Few Days Earlier - Thomas J. Brattin, a citizen of near Exeter about fifty-three years old, was found last Saturday night suspended from a beam in the Charles Ellston barn west of Exeter where he had hung himself. Mr. Brattin had just recently returned from Nevada where he had spent several months in the sanatorium. He disappeared from the Bowman home where he was staying Thursday afternoon and informed them that he was going to the home of his brother, Lorenza Brattin. When he failed to show up a search was begun which ended Saturday night when the body was found in the Ellston barn by Jess McClure. In hanging himself he had used a hay rope, which was in the loft. He had apparently fastened the noose about his neck, then bound his wrists with wire and then stepped through the loop, thus preventing the use of his hands after he had jumped. According to relatives he had considered suicide a number of times in the past and told them of a few attempts he had made. He is survived by a wife and two children who are living in Monett with relatives. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Denny served his country honorably in the United States Air Force until November 1, 1973. He then served in the Army Reserve and later retired from the National Guard. For many years, Denny worked at Wells Aluminum as Paint Coordinator. He was a member of the American Legion Post #91 and a member of the Monett Church of Christ. On April 25, 1980 in Miami, OK, Denny married Carol Ann Harrell. They have been blessed with almost forty years together. His son Elbert came in from Oklahoma on Tuesday. John served in the War between the States as a Federal in Company D., 15th Missouri Infantry. He enlisted on 22 Sept. 1862 and was honorably discharged at Victory, Texas in Oct., 1865. He was born Apr. 24, 1845 in Platte Co., MO and was a son of Wilson Cornelius and Mary (Liggett) Burnett. He married Susan Ellen (Masoner) Burnett 1866 in Platte Co., MO. She was the daughter of George and Agnes (Lauderdale) Masoner, Jr. John Burnett served as a Union soldier during the Civil War. In his military papers there were statements about different events of the war.
