Inscription: "The Vacant Place Cannot Be Filled" - Research Note: Jim's Note: I believe this person is Easter Catherine Ellis, first wife of Francis Marion Ellis. I have not been able to ascertain her maiden name, but the couple are found in the 1860 census in McMinn Co., TN and in the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Crane Creek Township, Barry Co., MO. Francis M. Ellis married Cassie Vauslorn (Van Horn), July 12, 1900, in Barry County. - Easter Catherine Tunnell, wife of Francis Marion Ellis, was the daughter of Jesse Tunnell and Rebecca Davis of McMinn County, TN. Jesse Tunnell was the son of John Tunnell and was named in his will. Correction: Francis Marion Ellis's second wife was Cassie Van Horn, a widow, not Vauslorn as I previously wrote. ELLIS, Ezearul/Ezekial July 28, 1854

Dec. 22, 1932
Monett,
Barry Co., MO
SSW: Harret Emeline Ellis - Inscription: "In God We Trust", "Father And Mother Rest In Peace." Has engraving of a Bible on stone. - Research Note: His wife was Harriet E. Ellis. Parents not known on the death certificate. Abby Ellis of Monett, MO was the informant. Jim's note: I am puzzled by the given name Ezearul on the stone. In all the census records his name is shown as Ezekial, except for 1880, when he is registered as E. Z. Ellis. E. Z. Ellis is also the name on his death certificate. Is the inscription on the stone a mistake? Ezekial Z. Ellis was the son of Benjamin Abbott Ellis and Mary Anna Maples, who were married in McMinn County, TN., Aug. 7, 1848. According to census records they came to Missouri between 1860 and 1870. E. Z. Ellis's death certificate gives his birth place as Barry County, MO., but I would feel certain that he was born in McMinn County, since the family is recorded in the census there in 1860, when he is shown to be six years old. He married Harriett Emeline Calton Sept. 19, 1875, in Barry County, and they were parents of seven children according to census records. - Story by Sylvia: Uncle Zeke was Ezekiel Ellis, the son of Benjamin Abbott Ellis and his wife Harriet Emmaline "Aunt Liney" (Calton) Ellis. I have pictures of them somewhere. They lived in Monett Missouri having come from Tennessee and Alabama. Liney was hard of hearing and Zeke and she were very "countrified" and unsophisticated. There is a family story of Zeke, having been invited to a friend's home who had electricity. He was 'caught short' during the visit and had to visit the restroom. He was told "To turn the bathroom light on, just pull the chain." He apparently went in and did so. Conversation went on without him for a while, but eventually the people noticed that Zeke had not emerged from the bathroom for quite some time! Finally the owner of the home investigated and found Zeke, still in the room, muttering and cussing under his breath. Subsequent investigation found that Ezekiel Ellis had never before SEEN a pull chain type light and he was trying to turn it off by pushing the chain back INTO the fixture! Quite reasonably, he had figured that if you pull the chain to turn it on, you had to push it back to turn the light off. Headstone

Research Note: John Mackey Ellis was a son of Ezekial Ellis and Margaret Ann "Peggy" Mackey. He married Hannah Maples Dec. 21, 1842 in McMinn County, TN. See notes for Hannah (Maples) Ellis. - Cassville Republican, Jan. 28, 1892 - Died Jan 10th, John M. Ellis, an old citizen of Ozark township, at his home in Clay Hill settlement. Mr. Ellis was known all over Southwest Missouri as old "Uncle John". He was born in McMinn Co., Tenn., (Jim Wilson has place of birth as AL.) June 3rd, 1833, and resided there until manhood, and was married to Hannah Maples whom he leaves to mourn his loss. He and his family moved to this state in the year 1852 and stopped in that part of Greene County now known as Christian, where they resided about eight years, then moved to Barry County where they have since resided. Uncle John raised five children, who are all residents of this county, three boys and two girls. He was converted to Christianity in his young days and has traveled that road ever since, being a prompt member of the Methodist Church until death. Uncle John never had an enemy on this earth that is known of. Just think of it, good people, how many of you today can say that you have not an enemy on this earth? Augusta. Headstone

Services were conducted at the Clay Hill Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest, Thursday, By Rev. Fly. In the midst of our tears we praise God that there is a home where there is no parting; that when this weary, waiting time is over, we shall gather in our Father's kingdom to enjoy the riches of his boundless love, and to have glad reunions with our loved ones, the ransomed and the redeemed of the Lord. We commend to the special care of our Heavenly Father this bereaved family. May God comfort them in their lonely hours and lead their minds to the brightness of the resurrection morning. How uncertain is the time and manner of our departure. "Therefore be ye ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the son of man cometh." [poem follows] Yours in Christ, Chas. H. Ellis. Headstone
