Research Note: Asa was a Baptist minister and pastor of the New Site Baptist Church both before and after the Civil War. Asa and Mariah Carlin came to Barry County in 1856 from Virginia and settled on Stone's Prairie, where they raised a large family. Son of John Carlin and Catherine Reed. Asa second married Malissa (Vermillion) Gilbert on Dec. 23, 1881 in Barry Co., MO. She is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Note

Research Note: Daughter of William Gifford and Jemima Waldo. Mariah was the wife of Asa Carlin. They traveled to Barry County with their family in a covered wagon from Virginia in 1856, and they settled in the Stone Prairie area. Her ancestors and cousins fought in the Rev. War, they founded towns, served as presidents, senators, and representatives. One ancestor was a rear admiral. One cousin signed the Declaration of Independence. Her grandfather was a minuteman and an Indian doctor. Two ancestors founded the town of Barnstable in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was a cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Through her Coggswell ancestry, her descendants are cousins of Princess Di, and they are therefore cousins of the future king of England. Note
