Research Note: According to his death certificate he was a farmer. His parents names were not listed and he was listed as single. He was age 70 years, 7 months and 5 days old. He died from the effects of a stagnated hernia. - Notes of Ray Roewert at findagrave.com: Herman Roewert, who would have been my great great uncle, was born to Michael and Charlotte (Goetsche) Roewert in either 1863 or 1864 (his death certificate shows 1864, but family data shows 1863). His life is a mystery to me. He was only married for few years, and, based on census data, he wandered about quite a bit. Records show him in Wisconsin, Colorado, Nebraska, and Missouri. He is apparently buried in an unmarked grave. Marriage record from Kit Carson Co., CO shows that Herman was married to Lida Austin on 1/31/1893 in Burlington CO. Seth at findagrave.com: Jennie E. Simmons was born in Illinois but her family moved to Missouri when she was a child. She met Isaac F. Seth Sr. and married him in 1898. They did not have their first child until 1905, Fayrelna Seth. Their second child Was Francis June. They moved to Gila Arizona around 1916 or so. While there, Isaac Seth met Albert B. Cutler Sr. They became good friends. He had his sister Thurza Seth come out to Arizona to stay with him, while there Isaac introduced Thurza to Albert B. Cutler. They fell in love and married. In 1918 Jennie became pregnant with my grandfather. She was 39 and so was Isaac. Tragedy struck in January of 1919. Isaac F. Seth died of Pneumonia caused by the flu. In 1919 WW I was wrapping up and soldiers were coming home. The great flu epidemic of 1919 killed millions of people and Isaac F. Seth fell victim too it. Jennie was crushed by her husband's death and accompanied his body back to Monett, Missouri where he was buried at Calton Cemetery just outside of Monett. Jennie gave birth to Isaac F. Seth Jr. on May 7, 1919 just four months after her husband had passed away. Shortly after this, Jennie moved to the Osage Indian Reservation in Pawhuska Oklahoma with her three children. In the 1920 census my Grandfather, Isaac F. Seth. Jr is living with Jennie's sister Stella Simmons Simpson and Jennie has her two daughters and they are living in a boarding house. In 1922 Jennie's eldest child, Fayrelna died at age 17. This broke Jennie's heart. Jennie eventually remarried to a Mr. Wright and moved back to Mountain Grove, Missouri with her two remaining children. After her children were grown she moved out to California with her husband Mr. Wright. Jennie lived a long life. George Washington Seth was born Dec. 7, 1846 died Feb. 7, 1911 in Jasper Co., Missouri. Son of George Washington and Mahala Seth. His wife was Martha Virginia (Hudson) Seth, born Dec. 1858 in MO. Their children were: Isaac F., Mary Jane (Mrs. Ethel Marbut), Maggie, George W. Jr., Thursa, Maude, Naoma, and Dewey Seth. - Cassville Republican, Feb. 16, 1911 - McDowell News: G. W. Seth who formerly lived here died at Joplin and was buried at Calton Cemetery. - Notes of J. Seth at findagrave.com: George W. Seth Jr.'s father died when he was just four years old and his mother Mahala died when he was approximately six or seven years old. He told his children he remembered an older brother named Isaac and remembered an older sister named Thurza that took care of him for some time after his mother died. George W. Seth ended up in an orphanage in Wichita Falls, Texas at least this is what was passed down. He became a cowboy on the Chisom Trail in Texas in the 1870's and was suppose to have served with the Texas Confederates as a boy during the civil war. He married to an unknown female before he married Martha Hudson. His first wife died in child birth and the child died as well. Someone in the family has a baby dress that George's first wife made for her unborn baby. I guess after they both died George kept the baby dress. George met Martha Hudson while working with her father John F. Hudson. They married in 1879 in Texas and soon moved with John Hudson to Green County, Missouri. George did not remember much about his mother and father. George W. Seth Jr. worked in the coal mines around Monett, Missouri for many years. His wife told my grandfather this caused his death. Martha Hudson Seth's father was John Franklin Hudson. He had lived in Missouri and wanted to move back. So the Seth's and Hudsons moved from Texas to Missouri. Isaac F. Seth at findagrave.com: Martha Virginia Hudson was said to be 1/8 or 1/4 Cherokee Indian on her mothers side. She was the daughter of John Franklin Hudson and Martha Jane Brown. She moved to Texas with her parents sometime before 1879. She met George W. Seth Jr. in Texas and married him in Jan. of 1879. 11 months later their first child was born, Issac F. Seth Sr. Before 1882 they moved to Green County Missouri with the Hudsons. They would go on to have 7 more children. In 1911 George W. Seth died. Eventually Martha V. (Hudson) Seth remarried to William Ballenger. My grandfather told me stories about her. He told me she was very stern and that she had very dark skin and was tall to a child. She was very distant and would correct grandchildren if they called her Grandma Seth and would say she was Grandma Ballenger. The horrible deed was done in the yard near the house in which Mr. and Mrs. Stevens were living and while Mr. Stevens was at the spring some distance away for a bucket of water. Coroner Miller of Monett held an inquest over the body, the jury's verdict being that Mrs. Stevens death was the result of her own voluntary act. Three shots were fired but the effect of only one could be found on body of the deceased. Neighbors living near heard the shots and hurried to the scene of the tragedy, reaching the Stevens home about the same time as the husband did. A girl who had been staying with the family, but who was not at the house at the time of the shooting, states that the husband and wife had quarreled only a short time before, the wife throwing out a bucket of water and demanding that the husband go to the spring for more water. The girl however, stated that she did not consider the quarrel to be a very serious matter. There seemed also to be evidence of previous quarrels. Mrs. Stevens was about twenty-one years of age. Her former home was Vernon County. She and husband were strangers in this county. For several months they lived northeast of Cassville 3/1/2 miles on Flat Creek. They moved form there to Pleasant Ridge in February, Mr. Sevens, while located near Cassville, was a solicitor for a picture enlarging house and was a young man of genteel appearance. After finding his wife dead neighbors stated that it took an effort to prevent him from shooting himself with the gun with which his wife had taken her life. Miss Elizabeth Long was born in Giles County, Tenn., April 28, 1842, and was a daughter of late Washington and Mrs. Patsy Long, old and esteemed citizens of Barry County, during life and came to Barry County in about 1860 and grew in womanhood in the vicinity of McDowell. She was first married to James Suttles who died during the Civil War at Springfield, and two children were born of this marriage, who are: Wm. H. Suttles, Monett and Mrs. J. T. Allcock (Marinda) of Pleasant Ridge township. In about 1867, she and Cary Thomas were married and 3 sons and 3 daughters were born of this marriage and only two sons survive this mother, who are Chas. Thomas of Starks City, Newton County and Dr. Pharis Thomas of Cassville. Cary Thomas died in 1901. She died March 5, 1920, at 4:15 a. m., at the home of her son, Dr. Pharis Thomas in Cassville, who gave her every care that was in his power, with assistance of Mrs. Thomas, his wife. She had been a member of the Church of God for many years and died in the that faith. Rev. J. T. Brattin conducted short funeral services at the Thomas home in this city at 9 a.m. Sunday after which the remains was conveyed to the Calton Church in Pleasant Ridge township, where Rev. C. A. Thomas at findagrave.com: Following is a story related to me [ET] by Huston's son, Erskel, and daughter, Leora: Huston and his brother, Marion Isaac, had been on some kind of "business" trip. On their way home they had become involved in some kind of altercation at Sherman's Saloon in Monett. Harry Birks had entered the Saloon and shot Marion with a shotgun. Harry was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Joe Jackson. Before dying Marion told the Deputy that the shooting was unprovoked. Huston was severely beaten and hauled home in the back of a wagon. Huston was "laid up" for a long time, recovering from the beating. His daughter Leora, "Ora", said that the injuries to his back led to a cancer in his back, resulting in his death in 1909 at the age of 34. This would have made the oldest child, Erskel, almost nine years old, at the time. There is a newspaper copy of this incident in the scrapbook for HT. Erskel stated that he and the others tried to raise money by growing strawberries, etc. but a dry spell hit and they had to "up and leave the farm", heading to Washington State. This must have been sometime between 1910 and 1921. Huston's notebook with entries dated from 1905 - 1906 listing transactions with community members and names (all pertaining to threshing and cutting lumber), as well as a gold watch, are in the possession of Ed A.
