Research Note: JKB footstone marker. John K. Burton said to be the first buried in this cemetery. Husband of Jane (Foster) Burton and Elizabeth (Bradley) Burton. Father of William Jesse Burton, Samira (Burton) Higgs, John "Uncle Doc" K. Burton Jr., and Cordelia E. Burton. He was shot by Major Moore's men, Federal Soldiers, in 1862, when he answered the front door of his home. It was charged that Mr. Burton succored rebels. - Listed in the book under the heading "Persons Holding Slaves in 1861" were: John K. Burton. - 1850 Census, District 5, Barry, Missouri - John K. Research Note: A farmer, he died of myocarditis. He was married to Tennessee Burton at time of death. Father listed as John K. Burton of MO, mother unknown. Informant listed as Mrs. James Burton. Mary's Note: JKB (Jr.) footstone marker - John K. Burton son of John K. and Elizabeth Bradley Burton, He was known as Uncle Doc. He was the husband of Tennessee (Bradley) Burton who was buried in Clark Cemetery because when she died, it was too muddy for them to get into Burton Cemetery to bury her by Uncle Doc, so she was buried in Clark Cemetery beside her father, Lawrence Bradley. - Wheaton Journal, Dec. 1931 - James (John) Kinslow Burton b. Research Note: William Jesse Burton, son of John K. and Elizabeth (Bradley) Burton and brother to my gg-grandmother, Samira Burton Higgs. He was a Confederate Soldier. - Cassville Democrat, February 6, 1909 - For seventy years Jesse Burton of Shoal Creek Township awaited the summons from a better land, and on Feb 1, 1909, he bade adieu to friends on earth and his spirit went to him who gave it. He was an old and highly respected citizen of this country and enjoyed the esteem of all his acquaintances. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He left a wife, a son, Ollie, and a daughter Miss Josie, who is very sick, to mourn his death. He was buried Tuesday afternoon in the Burton family grave-yard. He was a Confederate soldier during the civil war. - Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO, March 13, 1909 - W. J. Burton was born in Barry County, Missouri, Dec 25, 1838 and died Feb 1, 1909. He was converted and joined the New Hope Baptist Church July 1st, 1858 and lived a faithful member until death. He leaves a wife, and son and daughter to mourn his death. He was for many years treasure of this church: The church loves a faithful member; the community a good citizen. | HARPER, Myrtle (BURTON) | Sept., 1892 | Feb. 24, 1920 | Research Note: Myrtle Burton, age 24, married Ova Harper, age 34, on Dec. 5, 1914 in Barry Co., MO. - December 10, 1914, Cassville Republican - Hazel Dell News: Everett Powell, justice of the peace of Liberty township performed his first marriage ceremony Saturday evening. The contracting parties were Ova Harper and a Miss Burton of near New Hope Church. - Cassville Democrat, Feb. 28, 1920 - Mrs. Myrtle Burton Harper was born Sept. 1892 in New Hope neighborhood and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Doctor Burton. In 1916, she and Ova Harper were married and one little son was born of this marriage. She had professed Christ and had lived a good life. She died Feb. 24, 1920, aged 37 years of flu pneumonia. Her husband was sick with the flu as well as her mother, sister and brother. Rev. J. T. Higgs - husband of Samira J., son of John K. and Martha Harrison Higgs, born July 1823 - 1900 Federal Census, died after December 30, 1905. I have a land deed he signed with this date. - Betty's Note: George H. Higgs married Samirah J. Burton July 21, 1856 in Barry County, W. B Taliferro officiated. George H. Higgs (b. NC) age 39 enrolled in Co. L 76th EMM (Enrolled Missouri Militia) Feb. 1, 1863 at Cassville, Barry County; Number of days served is not known. George was a son of John Kenelm Higgs b. 1792 in NC and Martha Harrison Higgs b. 1802 NC . John and Martha married March 21, 1821 in Oxford Co., NC. My Father, Chester O. Higgs, remembered going to Uncle George's funeral and riding a wagon down the Hill to the cemetery when he was a young child. Research Note: Samira J. Burton Higgs - wife of George Higgs, daughter of John K. and Jane (Foster) Burton, born August 1834 - 1900 - Federal Census, died after December 30, 1905 (I have a land deed she signed with this date). Phyllis' Note: Family records have a birth date of Aug. 19, 1833. According to age in obit, probably born in 1835. - Cassville Democrat Jan. 16, 1909 - An Old Settler Dies: Again it is an unpleasant task to record the visit of the death angel to the home of George Higgs, an old and highly respected citizen of Liberty township, and there beckoned his beloved wife, Mrs. Semira Jane Higgs, to that better land, Jan. 5, 1909, after a sickness of about ten days in pneumonia, aged 73 years, 7 months and 14 days. She left a husband and five children to mourn her death. The children are Mrs. Dallas Box; Mrs. Walker England; Mrs. Tom Keeling and Horace and Geo. Higgs, all residents of that vicinity. She had been a member of the Baptist Church all her life, was a true wife, an affectionate mother and an excellent citizen. She was a daughter of the late John Burton and a sister of Jesse Burton, and has some half sisters. The remains were laid to rest in the Burton Family burying ground on the 6th. Funeral services were held at the residence.
