He then furthered his education at Drury University. Gaylon served his country honorably as a United States Marine during the Korean War. During his working years, Gaylon provided for his family as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He then began his career with the Missouri Division of Employment Security. He then worked as a Postman for the Monett Post Office, retiring in 1996 after 24 years of service. Following his retirement, Gaylon served the Purdy School District for 4 years as an AmeriCorps Reading Coach. He was a member and Deacon of the Macedonia Freewill Baptist Church.
