Frankie Carlin Meyer grew up on a farm on Carlin Ridge, located in the Success community between Rocky Comfort and Powell in the eastern area of McDonald County. As the crow flies her farm was near the border of Barry County. Carlin Ridge is about 11 miles southeast of Wheaton. Bushwhackers, Visions, Star-Crossed Lovers The book contains over 200 true stories, over 200 photographs, and 22 maps. It is about Ozark history and culture as seen through the eyes of settlers. Most of the stories center around Barry County, McDonald County, and Newton County, with several stories that also pertain to adjacent counties such as Benton, Washington, and Carroll counties in Arkansas. The book starts with the earliest settlers who entered the Ozarks through St. Charles and St. Louis. It then tells about the trails they took and their experiences as as they traveled south to Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas. The rest of the book tells about the lives of the settlers. It features photographs from the Fields Photo Archives. It also features photographs from the Haddock Elam Collection that includes several of the earliest families in the county. It has 256 pages, has a ten-page index, and is 8 1/2 by 11. For more information, please check Frankie's Web site at the address given above. The book can be ordered directly from me or purchased at the Wheaton Depot Museum, Barry County Museum at Cassville, Mustang Drug at Anderson, the McDonald County Museum at Pineville, the LeRu telephone office at Stella, the Stella Museum, Etcetera Gift Shop at the Neosho square, and the Newton County Museum at Neosho.
