Shrum Families of Barry County, MO

We start the Peter King Shrum family line of Missouri, with his father, Peter Shrum, born in 1787 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina, but first a little history.

Jacob Schramm & Anna Maria and children sailed for America on the Ship "Davy", leaving from the vicinity of Rotterdam, Holland, traveling via Cowes, England, arriving in the port of Philadelphia on 25 October 1738. Jacob and Anna Maria settled near York, PA where Jacob died in 1748. Anna Maria died near there in 1754. They have markers at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, York, PA where it is believed that they were buried.

Several sons of this immigrant group moved to new frontiers beyond York, before the War of Independence. Son Nicholas moved south to Lincoln County, North Carolina.

Nicholas left Pennsylvania via the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia about 1763 and settled in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Nicholas moved south to Lincoln County, North Carolina about 1765. The 1790 Census of Morgan District, Lincoln County, NC records Nicholas Shrum with 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16, and 5 females.

Nicolas Shrum wrote his last will and testament August 24, 1791 naming his wife Margaret and his children Peter, Nicholas Jr., Jacob, Mary, Elizabeth, Katreena, Christine, Margaret, Hannah, Sarah, Henry, John, David, Susannah, and Barbara. His will includes instructions, "to use the money arising from the sale of the estate to put to the use to school four of the youngest children. " Signed with "his X mark" Nicolas Shrum. Will was probated April 1793.

The first member of the Shrum Family to appear in Smith/Macon County, TN was Nicholas Shrum, Jr., son of Nicholas and Anna Kroener Shrum. It is believed that he left Lincoln County, NC after 1787. Nicholas Shrum, Jr. and Betsy Hostetler's children were determined by taking Smith County deeds to identify Nicholas, John, Peter (b. 1787) and Henry Shrum.

Stephen Calvin Gregory’s popular “Cal’s Column” section of the Macon County Times was devoted to genealogy and research on the history of the Upper Cumberland area of northern Middle Tennessee where one will find articles on the family of Nicholas Shrum Jr.

Peter Shrum, born in 1787 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina, was a son of Nicholas Shrum, Jr. Peter died in Macon Co., Tennessee and his son Peter King Shrum, Sr. migrated to Barry Co. Missouri. This family line begins with Peter Shrum, born in 1787.

Sources for this genealogy from family lore, Shrum notes of Mel Shrum’s database at RootsWeb, census records, Barry Co. GenWeb, and a family history by J. R. Shrum, graciously loaned to me by Leon Shrum. I have more on this family than is posted here and if anyone would like additional information, feel free to ask.

As in the past, I want to remind everyone that nothing is written in stone. This is only a guide to further one’s interest in the Shrum family.

Not sure that all these children are correct. Thomas L. was listed as son of Peter and then again as son of John Allen "Johif", same birth date, in the notes of Cal’s Column. There were supposedly 18 children in all. I have 17 listed.

Peter and Sarah had the following children:

2 i. Nicholas (1803-1863)

3 ii. John Allen (-1850)

4 iii. Tilman D. (1807-1901)

Also listed is Susan Shrum, age 10. Sarah is too old to have had Susan and I wonder if she is a child of Nancy's, born out of wedlock.

Other researchers have more than 2 wives for Peter King. I have first, Mary Tilitha Shinkly and second, Amy Parsley. There seems to be much confusion about the wives of Peter, Sr.

Family history passed on to me by a great-great grandson of Peter King Shrum says that he requested that he be buried on Kettle Mountain near Eagle Rock, Barry,Missouri. We made a trip to the burial site and you will find pictures on the following link. The story repeated to me was that he was taken by horse and wagon as far as they could go and then carried the rest of the way to the top of the mountain by friends and relatives. At one time, there was supposed to be 3 graves but we only found two stone markers. One of the other graves could be the young son of Peter King.

"The following information was given to me, (J. R. Shrum), by Mrs. Maggie Pat Claybourn of Green Forest, Arkansas. She states that her father,Henry Francis Shrum, was born in Clay Co., Tennessee. It is hard to say about this family, but looking at the name pattern of Peter Shrum of Smith County,Tennessee, this family is from one of his sons, probably the other unknown son. He would be the fourth generation.

Mrs. Claybourn gave the name of Thomas Shrum as her Great-grandfather and states that he was a Church of Christ minister, who came from Holland. She does not state when, only that he was 15 years old.

Next, she gave his sister, Becky Shrum Dixon. I have information on Becky and she is a daughter of Peter Shrum. She moved to North Arkansas and is buried in Carroll Co., Arkansas. (Note from Phyllis, I have her buried at Alpena, Carroll, Arkansas). I feel sure this Thomas Shrum is a son of Peter Shrum. I will list it this way and if any one finds it different they have my permission to correct it. "
