First Generation

1. William H. Fletcher. Born in about 1819 Vermont. William, according to family history, married a full blooded Indian, probably Cherokee. Note that in the 1870 census there is no wife. See both 1880 census records below. They raise a question of whether William was widowed or divorced. Could have been both.

(Most likely had older children who had already left home.)

William Fletcher, age 51, farmer, real estate value $8000, personal $1000, born VT

Martin, age 8, born WI (must be Melvin)

Luellen, age 3, born WI (Luellen and Melvin migrated to Missouri.)

Only 2 possible census that I found for 1880: Probably the same William Fletcher, counted twice. One census says he was widowed and the other says divorced. Both census are in the same location. When the census taker came, William could have been working for these people and was counted with their family.

If this is the same William, he must have had a daughter named Martha. Keep in mind that the census taker of that day sometimes made it easier on themselves to enter the same birth places, etc.

Picture of Melvin Fletcher

Source for Melvin's notes: Rose and Fletcher Descendants - by Larry E. Sanders

"Melvin made his living by trapping. In the wintertime, he mainly wore rubber boots with felt linings. It was not unusual for him to have a trap line that would require two to three days to run. He would sleep under bluffs with a fire built at the entrance. Even at home he would sleep on the floor in front of the fireplace. The maternal side of his family was Indian, supposedly a tribe of the Wisconsin area.

His father, according to family history, married a full blooded Indian, probably Cherokee. His farm was on Greasy Creek, which is one of the tributaries that feed the Big Sugar / Elk River waters. His home was located near a spring which fed two large clear water ponds which were stocked with large mouth bass. His grandsons aggravated him considerably by attempting to snag the nesting females in the spring of the year. When he was old, the Turvey boys of Seligman dealt him a low blow by finding him gone from home and digging a slit thorough the bank of the pond letting out all the water and of course taking lots of the fish. Not all the fish were gone however, and many were hauled in cans and barrels to other ponds, springs and any other water that could be found.

It had been a practice for many years to have a fish fry for him on his birthday and this continued until the year of his death. The grandsons who lived nearby were the children of Oscar and Etta (Fletcher) Vanzandt. He was a man of the outdoors and was at home with nature. He was an excellent sorghum maker. He had 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

His brother Lou, married Hattie Hill, sister of Etta Aurelia Hill Fletcher. They had three children, Cassie Pendergraft, Millie Presley, and Earnest. When Hattie died, Lou married Fannie Cargile and had 7 children; Willie, Frank, Harold, Epsie, Mary, Helen, and Leatha.

Another brother known as "Uncle Will" married in Kansas.

A sister Ada lived to be 100 years of age. She had no children and earned her livelihood as a maker of hats in Oregon.

A sister Lillie married after going to Oceanside, California. One child was born but died relatively young in life."

Rose and Fletcher Descendants

by Larry E. Sanders

"The children of the Fletcher family migrated south from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Apparently, Melvin and brother Lou were courting the two Hill girls, Etta and Hattie. The others also seemed to have reason to migrate.

The story is handed down that a disruption in the families by death or otherwise, precipitated some of the motivation. It is of interest that more than 130 years have passed and not a single effort has been made by family members to establish a linkage with the family that remained in LaCrosse."

On 17 Mar 1886 when Luellen Anthony AKA: Louie was 22, he first married Hattie Cordelia Hill, daughter of Simon C. Hill (1832-1921) & Mary Ann Willoughby (1843-1888), in Wisconsin. Born on 10 Oct 1866 in Wisconsin. Hattie Cordelia died in Emporia, Lyons, Kansas on 28 Sep 1894, she was 27. Buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Emporia, Lyons, Kansas.
