The Cargile Family - Barry Co., Missouri

Submitted By: Phyllis Long

This family was researched due to the request of Loyd Shrum, a direct descendant. This search has led us to cemeteries far and near in Barry Co., Missouri. Donna Cooper asked me to write about our findings for other Cargile researchers. I hope someone else can find answers in these pages. As with all genealogy research, nothing is written in stone. Any additions or corrections appreciated.

I would like to acknowledge all the wonderful information found on the Barry Co., Missouri GenWeb site from which I have gleaned marriage records, newspaper items, and some census records. Many thanks to all the hard work of the many researchers who have posted information to the site. Thanks to Donna Cooper who spends endless hours updating the website. Phyllis Long

We start this journey through the generations of the Cargile family of Barry Co., Missouri with the James Cargile family of Wilks Co., North Carolina and his wife Sarah Martin. James was most likely a nephew of William Cargile and Thomas Cargile, both who served in the Revolutionary War from Wilks Co., North Carolina. A partial record from actual copies of Revolutionary War papers as follows.

William Cargile
A son-in-law of William Cargile filed for the pension due the heirs of William in 1856 from Fentress Co., TN. In his deposition, it states that “from his best information said Carguile resided in Wilks County North Carolina in the year 1780 and that he entered the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War sometime in the month of April of May 1780 for the term of three of six months he is not certain which but refers to the muster rolls as a volunteer on? a horse. Company Commanded by Captain Pierson whose Command of company was attached to a Regiment Commanded by Major McCajah? Lewis and that he remained in the Service of the United States under a Captain Joshua Lawson as a volunteer horseman or Ranger until the close of the war and that he died in Wilks county North Carolina about the 10th of May 1844 or 1845. He is not certain which, and left the following named children to wit Lewis Carguile, Jason Carguile, Joel Carguile, 2nd Jason Carguile, Rebecca Carguile, Polly & Peggy, & Elisabeth as appears from his will which is of record in Wilks Co., N.C. dated the 23rd day of July 1842 that in his last will & Testament he appointed Adam Staly and William Wood Executors who reside in Clinton county Ky “.

Thomas Cargile
Thomas Cargile filed for his pension on Oct 22, 1833 from Bellefonte, Jackson county, Alabama. In his deposition it states that “Thomas Cargill, of this county, now in his 72nd year personally appeared in open court and being ????? duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress of the 7th June 1832.

From the record of my age as states in my fathers bible, and which I have not to ??????, I was born on the 30th March 1702 in the state of Virginia but before the revolution I was removed with my fathers family into North Carolina.

About April 1777, being about one month in my 16th year, I volunteered in Wilks County N. Carolina and joined a company of militia which was raised to scour the country in search? of Tories.”

It goes on to say that at the close of the Revolution he removed to Georgia where he remained until about 1816, when he removed to Alabama (then Mississippi territory), where he still resided.

Thomas died on Sept. 10, 1847 and at that time his widow, Mourning Cargile, applied for his pension from Marshall Co., Alabama.

On 17 Nov 1812 when James was 23, he married Sarah Martin, in Wilks Co., North Carolina. Born about 1792 North Carolina. Sarah died on 24 Oct 1877 in Coffee Co., Tennessee.

James and Sarah had the following children:

Children:

2 i. John (-1862)

3 ii. Isaac Martin born about 1828 Tennessee

2. John Cargile.

Born in about 1815 Tennessee. John died on 1 Jul 1862 in Barry Co., Missouri. Buried in Old Washburn Cemetery, AKA: Sulherd Cemetery, Washburn, Barry, Missouri.

John Cargile, son of James and Sarah, was born about 1815 in Tennessee. There seems to be Cargiles everywhere in Tennessee so I would not venture a guess as to what county. However, Overton Co. seems to be popular with Cargile people.

John married Emeline E. Eubank, daughter of Thomas Eubank and Nancy Old, maybe Aug 24, 1840, Barry Co., Missouri. I say “maybe” because there seems to be a lot of controversy on the subject. Some researchers report that Emeline first married William Lane. The first child born to John and Emeline was 6 Oct 1841. I wouldn’t think that they would have waited until approximately 5 weeks before the birth of their first born to get married. Of course, not being there, one does not know the circumstances. At any rate, the following record can be found on the Barry Co., genweb site. Take note that John had a brother named Isaac who married Evaline Cunningham.

Ex-Sheriff Victim of Pneumonia.

John R. Sullivan,

Twice Sheriff Of Barry County,

Dies After Illness of Less Than A Week.

The citizens of Cassville and community were stricken with grief when Saturday morning at an early hour the news was received that John R. Sullivan had passed away at his home just south of this city. He had contracted pneumonia a few days before but as only one lung was involved at the beginning of his illness his family and many friends were hopeful that he would recover. Friday night he grew rapidly worse and passed away at 5:20 o'clock Saturday morning.

John Riley Sullivan was born in Ash township in 1854. There he grew to manhood. In 1876 he was married to Miss Harriett Cargile near Washburn and since that time had been a citizen of this county, living near Washburn until December 1900 when he moved Cassville, for a few years in the early seventies he lived in Benton County, Ark.

He leaves a wife and five children, three sons, Elsey, Ed and Carl; and two daughters, Miss Tennie at home and Mrs. Dora Loyd of Arkansas.

Mr. Sullivan was elected sheriff of Barry County in 1900 and re-elected in 1902, the office at that time being only a two year office. He made an excellent official and won the highest esteem of the citizens of the county by his impartial and faithful discharge of an official duty. He was a man of sterling integrity, quiet and conservative, steadfast in what he believed to be right and loyal to his family and friends, In his passing the county loses one of its good substantial citizens. The funeral services were held at the home one mile southwest of town where

his family has lived since expiration of Mr. Sullivan's term of office, January 1905. The services were conducted by Rev. L. R. Lamb, pastor of the Baptist Church of this city and interment made at Oak Hill Cemetery.

[Research Note: In November of 1909 he gave his birth date to the paper in the following item: John R. Sullivan of near Cassville was born June 5, 1853, in Ash township, and has lived practically all his life in Barry County.

Nov 25, 1875, he and Miss Harriett Cargile were married near Washburn, and have been the parents of six children, five of whom are living. In 1900 he was elected sheriff of Barry County on the Democratic ticket was reelected in 1912, [Probably should be 1902 if he died in 1916.] and served four years and discharged his duties efficiently. He has a good farm one mile south of Cassville and is living happily.

November 13, 1909, Saturday, Cassville Democrat, Barry Co., MO - November Grand Jury - Short Biography of the Member of the Jury.

There was another son, too. He was named James Edward Sullivan, born 16 Feb 1881 - died 22 Aug 1959, and he was buried Longview Cemetery. He was married to Blanche Brown.] (Note: Son "Ed" is mentioned in the obit. Probably the same person as James Edward.)

Aged Citizen Dies: Mrs. Malinda Ann Edens died at her home near Washburn, April 27, 1916 of infirmities attending old age. She was in her 88th year, having been born Nov 23, 1828.

She was the widow of the later Petser Edens who lived for years in the Rock Springs locality near Washburn.
