Vernon McCracken Memories of Swindle College School

Vernon went to school at Swindle and graduated from the 8th grade there in about 1945. He later graduated from Wheaton High School in 1949-50.

At Swindle his teacher was Ercie Brattin Kimbrough. Ercie lived on the south bank of Woodard's Creek which was about 2-3 miles away, so for transportation she rode a horse to school everyday. (during WW2) One day the boys, who would be boys, decided to untie her horse to see what she would do … of course the horse headed for home! Ercie did not have a ride home that day!

Vernon rang the bell many times at school and one time the rope got wound around the bell and Ercie asked Vernon to climb up in the Belfry to unwind it. It was kind of a scary mission but Vernon was glad to do it.

He said that the Francisco family all went to school there at Swindle. Leroy, Betty, Dolly and Bea.

Vernon walked to school every day and back home. They lived at the Cartwright place southeast of Wheaton during that time. He walked quite a distance.
