Details This picture is of the Seligman High School Students taken in front of the school building. My mother graduated from Seligman High School in 1927. So, I am assuming that this picture was taken during School Year: 1926-27. My mother, Winnie (Lawrence) Clark, is the girl in the center of the back row with the black sweater. I believe that the girl standing immediately to her left is her sister, Elsie (Lawrence) Nodine. I cannot identify any other person in the picture. However, there is the possibility that Truman Smith and Pat Wardlaw are in the picture. Mother often spoke about them being in school with her. Both of those guys became teachers. I believe that Pat Wardlaw eventually became an Assistant Commissioner of Education in the State of Missouri.

My mother was almost 22 years of age when she graduated from Seligman High School. She earned two high school diplomas--one from Washburn and one from Seligman. My nephew currently has both of those documents. Based upon what my mother told me, at that time, Washburn only offered two years of high school. She had graduated from the eighth grade from Union Valley School in 1919, at the age of 14. She then completed the program at Washburn. Her family lived 2 miles north and one mile west of Washburn. She then boarded with a family in Seligman to complete her last two years of high school. She alternated years at school with her sisters, Elsie and Esther. Her father did not feel he could afford to send them at the same time; plus, he needed them to help on the farm. Mother and Elsie graduated the same year, 1927. I believe that Esther graduated the next year, 1928.

My mother told me her brother, Ethel Lawrence, had also completed two years of high school at Washburn, but did not complete the other two years. Ethel was 5 years older than my mother. By the time the youngest brother, Leon Lawrence, came along, Washburn had a four year high school program. Leon graduated in the Washburn class of 1934.
