Minnesota in the Civil and Indian Wars 1861-1865 For Minnesota this was also the exact same time frame for the outbreak of the 1862 Dakota upraising, and a short rebellion in the northern part of the state by the Ojibway. A considerable number of Native Americans volunteered into service, including a chapter on the White Earth 9th Regiment, Company G which was placed into service against the Dakota after a brief training stint at Fort Snelling. The Company went on to several battles in the South on behalf of the Union and were recognized for their courage and valor in combat.

NARRATIVE OF THE NINTH REGIMENT
by Hon. C.F. MacDonald.

The Ninth Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry was enlisted in the month of August, 1862, under the president's call of July 2 of that year for 300,000 men. While the several company were being recruited and transported to the rendezvous at Fort Snelling, the Souix Indian outbreak occurred, and the volunteers were immediately armed and sent to the frontier to protect the settlers. Company G was recruited at St. Cloud, by Lieut. Theo. H. Barrett, from Aug. 16 to 22, 1862.
