I made this quilt to commemorate the service of the 150 men of the First Regiment Heavy Artillery Minnesota Volunteers. Those who appear on the quilt from this site are Andrew Baker (Age 37 Enlisted Feb. 11, 1865, Mustered out Sep. 27, 1865), Thomas Hope ( Age 19, Enlisted Feb. 13, 1865, Mustered out Sep. 27, 1865), and William Plumb (Age 40 Enlisted Feb. 18, 1865, Mustered out Sep. 27, 1865.)

It took a little over a year to make this quilt. This was entirely my own idea and design, and it was not financed by anyone else. It is machine pieced, and hand quilted over every 1/4 of an inch. I used some Civil War Reproduction fabric and some that just looked old to me. The top two rows are the officers beginning with William Colville. The men listed are alphabetized as well as the original roster was. Each block is for one man, with his age, enlistment, muster, and where and when they were killed or discharged. It was a project that basically made itself. It has been showcased in two of our local newspapers.

I also want to make a quilt like this in remembrance of the Sea Wing Disaster, a tour boat that was in a terrible storm and capsized on Lake Pepin in 1890. My GGUncle Peter Gerken from Red Wing, his wife, 6 children 2 nieces and a nephew, their total family, drowned on that boat.
