PEI Lot 31

Prince Edward Island

Lot 31

This is an on-going study to find the origins of people who settled in or around Lot 31 of PEI. All contributions are invited to enhance the value of this page.

Bruce Elliott stated in an article on page 6 of Issue No. 41 in the Island Magazine under the title of "OTHER ENGLISH SETTLEMENTS", that a late settlement from Wiltshire was established on the Earl of Selkirks's estate by William Douse, Selkirk's island agent, who had emigrated from Devizes in the 1820's. Information for sources of information and / or possible leads to pursue was requested from Mr. Elliott but he is undoubtedly very busy with his academic responsibilities. He advised in 1997 that he was leaving for Northern Ireland and would respond further after he returns. It can only be presumed that he has not returned even though it is now late in the year 2001. He is / was with the Department of History, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

There was somewhat of a mass migration from the area around Lot 31 to the NW corner of Kittson County, Minnesota. It is only a matter of conjecture but it might be reasonable to think that the cause of this migration was a combination of the tenant's negative feelings against their PEI landlords coupled with the new territory opening for homesteading in NW Minnesota. The names of families on the streets of the small village of Humboldt, Minnesota, as an example, read like the names on the maps up and down Wiltshire Road on PEI.

Professor Ian Ross Robertson wrote a book called "The Tenant League of Prince Edward Island, 1864-1867: Leasehold Tenure in the New World" which gives an excellent description of PEI conditions for the tenants at that time. The book may be purchased from the University of Toronto Press (Toronto - Buffalo - London) and is recommended reading for anyone studying this part of PEI. The table of contents shown below will give you a good overview of the subject matter and you may be interested in a few excerpts of the book describing Lot 31 activities regarding the Tenant League.

9. Military Desertion and the Tenant League

Some names in the book are Alexander McNeill, John Balderston, Benjamin Balderston, Jr., Charles Dickieson, George Clow, and others. It explains the function of the "Tin Trumpet."
