Many early settlers came from Bukovina, Austria that was then under Austrian rule and later came under Romanian rule. They all spoke low Russian.

Soon, they decided to build a church. There was no capital, so when winter came, a group of men went east to Sundown, the pine country, where they cut logs and hauled them to the Roseau River. In the spring, when the river was high, they floated the logs down stream to Caribou. With a lot of hard labor they built the church on the land donated by Alexander Mikety. The church was completed and dedicated in 1909 as St. Nicholas O.C.A. (Orthodox Church in America). It was serviced by Russian Orthodox Missionary Priests.
