Margaret Fuhrman

Margaret Vida (Peggy) Fuhrman, 77, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1999 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Home, Litchfield.

Margaret was born Nov. 7, 1921 in Saco, Mont. She was the daughter of Herbert Knowlton and Vida (Clow) Knowlton. Peggy was baptized on Palm Sunday as an infant in Saco in 1922 and confirmed in her faith in Hallock in 1944.

She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1939 and continued her education for two years at the University of Minnesota in Crookston in the business college department.

Margaret was united in marriage to William (Bill) Fuhrman Jan. 1, 1943, in Hallock. This marriage was blessed with four children: Cheryl, Kent, Linda and Laurie. Peggy and Bill shared 56 years of marriage and resided in Litchfield since 1958.

From 1941 - 1944, Peggy worked for the Kittson County Welfare Office and then worked as secretary for the Meeker County Civil Defense Department for over six years. Peggy spent most of her life as a homemaker, looking after her husband and their four children.

Peggy was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Litchfield for many years, serving as a WELCA club member and choir member, among other things. She was also a 20 year volunteer for the Girl Scouts of America in Litchfield. In addition, she taught crafts in the community education department for three years and was a member of the high school faculty club.

She is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Fuhrman, Litchfield; children and spouses, Cheryl Olson and husband Robert, Hutchinson; Kent Fuihrman and wife Linda, Big Lake; Linda Fuhrman, St. Cloud; Laurie Koehn and husband Howard, Litchfield; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Knowlton and Vida Knowlton; brothers, Lowell and David Knowlton; and sister, Eloise Glad.

William Fuhrman

William (Bill) Romaine Fuhrman, 86, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at the Bethany Home in Litchfield.

William was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Waverly, Iowa. He was the son of Ernest and Ida (Scharnhorst) Fuhrman. Bill was baptized Jan. 12, 1913, and was later confirmed in his faith April 5, 1925, both at the Luthern Church in Waverly.

He grew up and attended school in Waverly, and graduated from Waverly High School. Bill went on to attend the University of Minnesota and received a bachelor of science degree in 1938.

Bill became a teacher and sports coach in Lancaster until 1942, when he entered the U.S. Navy. He served his country during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1946.

While in the service, Bill was united in marriage to Margaret "Peggy" Knowlton, Jan. 1, 1943, in Hallock. This marriage was blessed with four children: Cheryl, Kent, Linda, and Laurie.

Bill taught and coached sports in Sandstone from 1946 to 1952. He went on to become the principal of the high school in Henning from 1952 to 1958 during which time he returned to the University of Minnesota and earned his master of arts degree in 1957. Bill and his family settled in Litchfield where he was the high school guidance counselor and coach from 1958 to 1978. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Litchfield, where he served on the church council and as a Sunday School teacher. Bill was also an active member of the American Legion, the Foreign Exchange Program, the Willmar Junior College Committee, and the Litchfield Area Male Chorus. Bill and Peggy shared 56 years of marriage, before she died Aug. 7, 1999.

In his spare time, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and anything that had to do with the outdoors. Singing and traveling around the world with the Litchfield Area Male Chorus was his favorite pastime, which left him with very fond memories and friendships. He was also an avid sports fan . . keeping up with all the latest statistics of professional, college and Litchfield High School teams.

Beill is survived by his children and spouses, Cheryl and Robert Olson, Hutchinson; Kent and Linda Fuhrman, St. Cloud, and Laurie and Howard Koehn, Litchfield; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ida Fuhrman, wife, Margaret "Peggy" Fuhrman, and brother, Donald Fuhrman.
