Donald E. Kitt

Donald E. "Don" Kitt, 68, formerly of Oliver County, died Jan. 30, 2001, in a Billings, Mont. hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before services at the funeral home. Don was born May 15, 1932, in Burleigh County. He attended school in Oliver County and graduated from Mandan High School. After graduation, he worked construction until he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1952-1954. He then went to college at Wahpeton State School of Science, while working for Carl Schmidt and Howard Brand at the Texaco Co. He married Betty Mackley on July 10, 1954, and moved to ranching.

In 1960 he moved to Billings, Mont., and began working for Midland Dodge Co. Late in 1980, Don moved to Shepherd and opened the Shepherd Country Market and also drove school bus, taking the seniors on senior trips.

He was a volunteer fireman, a member of the Lions Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He worked as rural postal carrier until Dec. 29, 2000.

Don loved people, dancing, horses and fishing, but most of all, elk hunting with his friends. Don was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest national award presented to a Lion, and the first ever presented in the (Shepherd Chapter) State of Montana as well as nationally.

Donald is survived by his wife, Alice; three daughters, Stacey Kitt and Amy Williams, both of Billings, and Leisa Moore, Texas; four grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce Kitt. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Carrie Kitt in 1977, and Edward Kitt in 1979. Don's final resting place will be at the Harmon Cemetery, along the Missouri River, on the Lewis and Clark Trail.


Karroll Kitt, Associate Professor of Family Economics, University of Texas, Austin, Texas ­ Dr. Kitt's experience in family economics and financial planning includes research in areas such as long-term care insurance, disability income insurance, consumer satisfaction with prescription drug counseling, and employee decision-making factors regarding the selection of health benefits. Dr. Kitt received designation as Certified Financial Planner from the College of Financial Planning, Denver. She received her Ph.D. in Family Economics & Management from Purdue University, and her master's degree in family economics and bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska.

Hilda Rahn

BEULAH -- Hilda Rahn, 89, Beulah, died April 27, 2000, in the Mandan

hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MDT at Peace Lutheran

Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Old

Peace Cemetery, Hazen. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Sunday and 9

a.m.-noon Monday at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.


Hilda was born Feb. 8, 1911, near Krem, the daughter of Gotthilf and Katharina (Tschaekofske)

Grosz. She grew up and was educated in the Krem area. Following her

1937, Hilda was united in marriage to Albert Rahn at St. Paul's Lutheran

Church. To this marriage, they were blessed with two sons, Gene and

Dallas. Together, Hilda and Albert farmed 10 miles north of Hazen.

Following Albert's death in 1974, Hilda moved to Hazen, where she

resided until moving into Knife River Care Center in Beulah. She was a

member of Krem area Homemakers Club and was active in the Peace

Lutheran Ladies Aide in Hazen. Hilda enjoyed gardening and cooking for

her family and guests. She especially enjoyed her family and will be

missed by all.

She is survived by her son, Dallas, Layton, Utah; two sisters,

Selma Huber and Leona Lamphier; one brother, Erwin Grosz; three

sisters-in-law, Edna Rahn, Adina Haining and Ida Shiney; and one

brother-in-law, Fred Harbecke. Hilda was preceded in death by her

parents; her husband; one son, Gene; five brothers and two sisters.
