THE HISTORY OF KREIS SCHLOCHAU
1312 - The area of Schlochau is purchased by the German Knights Order.
1325-1365 - They construct a fortress there (shown above).
1348 - Schlochau receives city rights.
1354 - Preussisch Friedland receives city rights.
1382 - Baldenburg receives city rights.
1395 - Hammerstein receives city rights.
1410 - The battle of Tannenberg between the Poles and the German Knights Order. Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen is killed in the battle.
1411 - The first Treaty of Thorn/Torun. The German Knights Order regain
their lands and armor, banners and equipment lost on the battlefield. Also
they must pay an idemnity to Poland.
1454-1466 - War between Poland and the German Knights Order.
1466 - The German Knights Order lose lands, including Schlochau, in the second treaty of Thorn/Torun.
1772 - Taking advantage of a weak central government, the three superpowers, Prussia, Russia, and Austria, partition Poland three times in 1772, 1793, and 1795. Schlochau becomes part of West Prussia in the 1772 partitioning.
1919 - Most of West Prussia is awarded to Poland after WWI, including 1/5 of Kreis Schlochau. The rest of Kreis (county) Schlochau is part of Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia.
1938 - Schochau is part of Pomerania.
1939-1945 - WWII. The Russians invade Schlochau in late Feb. of 1945.
1945 - Schlochau becomes part of Poland.
