Once known as St. Petri

This cemetery listing kindly visited and transcribed by Ann, June 2002

St. Peter Lutheran Church & Cemetery

Section 1, Columbia Township, Polk County, MN (RRVGS states this cemetery in Norman County)

Rural Lengby – East of Fosston , MN

St. Petri Lutheran Church (now known as St. Peter) was organized in 1888.  Served by Rev. G.P. Nesseth, Rev. Jerdee, Pastor Refsdahl and Pastor Kringle among others.  Lars Sovick donated the land for the cemetery in 1893.The church closed in 1966 and is used once a year for a special service and sometimes for funerals.   It is well cared for by neighbors who can be very proud of their preservation of Columbia township history.  This church is right next to the Clearwater County / Polk County line so there are now doubt people from both counties buried here.

1891- Ingeborg Sovick. Born in Norway Apr 4th 1847. Maiden name
Frostad. She was the second wife of Lars Sovick. She died of
influenza (Le Grippe, in the parlance of that day) on May 4th 1891,
and was buried on Lars Sovick's farm as there was not yet any church
or cemetery. In Feb of 1892, Lars Sovick donated the land around
Ingeborg's grave for a church and cemetery. In 1899 an agreement was
made to trade the land in the north part of the cemetery back to Lars
Sovick for a piece of land on the south side that abutted the road.
This required the reburial of those persons buried north of the new
line. Ironically, Ingeborg Sovick was one that had to be moved. She
was the mother of eight children : Peter, Ole*, Hans*, Edwin, Henry,
Carolina (Bjorke), Juliana (Holden), and Emma (Halkinrud). Henry was
adopted out after his mother died and went by Henry A Berg.

Unmarked Graves
Belsheim, Anna 1880 Norway - June 28th 1892 1892- Anna Belsheim (also spelled Belsem, but Belsheim is the way it
was written in all the early records). Born in Norway in 1880. Died
of TB on June 28th 1892. She was the daughter of Osten and Martha
Belsheim, who farmed in Popple Township, Clearwater (at that time
Beltrami) County. She had a sister, Betsy who was born in Renville
County MN on Dec 17th 1883. She also died and was buried at St Petri
in the 1890's but we don't know when exactly (probably prior to
1895). The graves are not marked, but we do know the location of the
Belsheim lot.

Bjore, Olava 24 July 1875 Norway - 18 Aug 1892 1892 - Olava Bjore- Born in Norway on July 24th 1875. Bit of a mystery here.
According to Polk county recorder, this is a daughter of Anders
Bjore. They couldn't make out the wife's name as it was smudged, but
Guro would have been quite young when Olava was born, not that it was
impossible, but not extremely common. Was
Anders Bjore married before, or is this a sister, or is this Anders
and Guro's daughter? Anyway, she died on Aug 18th 1892.

Larson, Lisa (Elisa Bjore) 27 Aug 1887 - 27 Nov 1895 1895- Lisa A Larson- Born Aug 27th 1887 in Norway . Another
mystery. Polk County recorder says this is a daughter of Anders and
Guro Bjore. I know it was not unheard of at the time for girls in a
family to take the dad's middle name as a last name. In something I
read that Minda Bjore Olson wrote, it said that Anders and Ole
Bjore's dad was named Lars, and I know they both had the middle
initial L. (Larson?) So it could be I suppose. . Lisa is buried in Anders Bjore's lot. She
died on Nov 27th 1895. Her grave is not marked. (The location of all
the unmarked graves are known).

Bjore, Elisa (Lisa Larson) 27 Aug 1887 - 27 Nov 1895 1895- listed as Lisa A Larson- Born Aug 27th 1887 in Norway . Polk County recorder confirms this is daughter of Anders Bjore and Goro Skoien (Thanks to Tim and Laura Johnson)
Lisa is buried in Anders Bjore's lot. She died on Nov 27th 1895. Her grave is not marked. (The location of all the unmarked graves are known).
Knutson, Simon 1840 Norway - 12 Dec 1895 Simon Knutson- Born in Norway in 1840. He died Dec 12th 1895. His
wife's name was Louise. They had no children. It was in their house
that the St Petri congregation was first organized in 1888. They
farmed in Popple Township, but had operated a hotel in Southern MN
when they first came over. His grave is unmarked.
