Carl William Seifert, 77, of Dent, MN, died Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the Perham Memorial Hospital & Home (Transitions Unit). Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dent, Minnesota with Father Dan Walz officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Perham, Minnesota. Carl was born July 17, 1932, at his parents’ home in rural Perham. He attended St. Joseph’s country school and then attended Perham High School. After graduation, he farmed with his parents until he entered the United States Army. After serving his country, Carl returned to work on the family farm in Perham Township. On June 23, 1962, Carl married Anna Obowa at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Carl continued farming until his daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Duane Mann, took over the farm. After farming, he worked for Huebsch Turkey Farm, Ed’s Outdoor and Hardware, and also for Alan Seifert’s construction company. Later, Carl worked as a cleaner at the Dent Elementary School for 14 years. He enjoyed working with the staff and loved seeing the students whom he considered his “grandchildren.” After retiring, he loved woodworking and making toys and gifts for friends and relatives. He also loved going uptown “to get the mail” and stopping at ‘Nootzi’s’ for a cup of coffee to visit his many friends and relatives. Carl also loved feeding and watching the many birds that came to the bird feeders. He was an active member of the Sacred Heart Council (Dent) of the Catholic Aid Association and served many years on the Perham Township Board. Carl is survived by his wife, Anna, Dent; five children, Carla (Duane) Mann, Chris (Jackie) Seifert, Theresa Seifert, Rosemary (Gregory) Culp, and Richard Seifert; three grandchildren, Courtney Seifert, Nicholas Culp and Wesley Culp; a sister, Rose Martodam; and three brothers, Paul (Betty), Leon and Daniel Seifert. Preceding Carl in death are his parents, Alex and Louise (Fiedler) Seifert; a sister, Mary Seifert; a brother, John Seifert, Jr.; grandson, Zachary Culp; brother-in-law, George Martodam; and sisters-in-law, Mary Patricia “Pat,” Delilah and Darlene Seifert.

John Seifert, 83, St. Joe Pioneer Is Found Dead
John Seifert, who lived all his 83 years in the St. Joe community, died at his home December 13. when he didn't appear at church services, his son Ludwig and wife crossed the street to his home to investigate. They found he had gotten up and dressed for church before he fell on the kitchen floor and died. He had lived alone since the death of his wife on June 18, 1951. Mr. Seifert, the son of George and Margret Seifert, was born in Perham township June 22, 1873. He spent most of his life farming in this community. He was married to Elizabeth Kramer at Perham on November 12, 1895. Surviving the loss of their father are nine children, Alex and Ludwig of St. Joe, William of Perham, Walter of Minneapolis, Isabel (Mrs Frank Wasche) of Jamestown, North Dakota; Ottila (Mrs Ernest Andreen) of Minneapolis, Susan (Mrs. Joseph Siebels) of Perham; Bertha (Mrs. John Schmitz) of Minneapolis, Margaret (Mrs. Raymond Siebels) of Perham. He also leaves 28 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. One child died in infancy. Funeral services were held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church on December 15 with Rev. John Wildenborg officiating. Interment was made in the St. Joe cemetery. Pallbearers were James, Francis, Carl and Don Seifert, James and Bob Siebels.

John Seifert, Jr.
John Walter Seifert, Jr., age 75, Perham, MN, died May 26, 2005, at Meritcare Medical Center in Fargo, ND. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Perham, MN. Reverend Ken Popp officiated with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation was Monday, May 30, 2005, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. John was born August 23, 1929, in Perham, Minnesota, to Alex and Louise (Fiedler) Seifert. He attended St. Joe's Country School and graduated from the eighth grade. He was drafted during the Korean War where he served as Army cook. He was united in marriage to Ann Schornack on December 27, 1951, at St. Henry's Catholic Church. After his release from the service in 1953 he returned back home where he and Ann were blessed in raising 9 children. John worked at the Perham Co-op Creamery for 39 years delivering milk and was known for making the "Pride of Perham" butter. He worked many other odd jobs to support his family but always managed to put aside Sunday as a family day. John was a quiet man but had a sense of humor that was with him even to the end of his life. He never complained and always had a grin on his face. John enjoyed woodworking, ice fishing, card playing and sitting back and cherishing his family. He was the best Grandpa, always teasing whenever the grandkids came to visit. He was a devoted husband, father and friend. One of his enjoyments was planting his garden and watching the fruits of his labor grow. John was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4020 in Perham, the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Family Catholic Aid and a charter member of the Lakes Lions of Perham.
John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann, Perham, Minnesota; 4 sons, Tim (Shawn), Roland, IA; Joe (Tami), Pelican Rapids, Minnesota; Jerry (Cindy), Longview, Texas; Steve (Carolyn), Rochester, Minnesota; 5 daughters, Patricia (Don) Hendrickx, Perham, Minnesota; Diane (Mike) Moorhouse, Fargo, North Dakota; Janice (Joe) Guck, Perham, Minnesota; Carol (Mike) Nelson, Perham, Minnesota; Kathy (Brian) Seifert, Perham, Minnesota; 31 grandchildren, Jacob, Sam, Mark, Katie, Peter, Sarah, Ben, Andrea (Jon), Matthew, Stacie (Kelly), Jeremy, Amy (Emmanuel), Kelsey, Natalie, Ryan, Kelly, Teresa, Lauren, Angie, Tony (Renee), Breann, Melissa, Kylee, Zach, Joshua, Ashlie, Kyle, Brent, Teri, Haley, Emily; and 2 great granddaughters, Madyson and Hannah. John is also survived by 4 brothers, Paul, Scottsdale, AZ; Carl, Dent, Minnesota; Leon, Sebeka, Minnesota; Dan, Hawley, Minnesota; and a sister, Rose Martodam, Wadena, Minnesota. John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary.

When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. You lived your life in such a manner that when you died, the world cried and you rejoiced.

Another Old Timer Gone
Adam Silbernagel Died Saturday - Was Pioneer Resident of Edna Township
Another of the pioneer residents of Otter Tail County joined the great majority when on Saturday, August 20th Adam Silbernagel of Dent answered the final summons. Mr. Silbernagel died from sarcoma which started in his eyes and finally spread over his body. Born in Germany March 13, 1858, he came to America in 1876. After residing in Sheboygan, Wisconsin for two years he came to Otter Tail county and took up a homestead in Edna township, being among the first of the settlers in that locality. His marriage to Barbara Seifert took place on August 31, 1886. To them eight children were born, two of whom, Elizabeth and Alois preceded him in death. Surviving him are his wife and the following children: (Sarah) Mrs. Math. Winkles, Edna town; Paul of Dent; Joseph of Minneapolis; (Carrie) Mrs. A. E. Markuson, Minneapolis; (Regina) Mrs. Martin Berringer, Perham; (Francis) Mrs. Chas. May, Minneapolis. He leaves thirty-two grandchildren. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at Sacred Heart church in Dent and was attended by a large number of friends and relatives. Rev. Fr. Odilo Kohler of St. John's at present in charge, officiated in the requiem and Rev. Fr. Wildenborg of St. Joe said the last rites at the cemetery, the burial being in the cemetery at St. Joe. The St. Joe Society met the body at the cemetery and the St. Joe choir sang a hymn. Mr. Silbernagel spent nearly all of his 69 years of life in this vicinity. He retired from active farming in 1918. He moved to Minneapolis shortly afterward and remained there for two years returning to his old neighborhood to live about six years ago. He located in Dent and continued to live there until the last summons. The following from outside points attended the funeral: Jos. Silbernagel and family, Minneapolis; Mrs. Markuson and family, Minneapolis; Mrs. Charles May, who was here spending her vacation; Wm. Fiedler and family of St. Joseph's Stearns County; Rose Pfannenmeister, St Joseph's; Francis Winkles and Hubert Kramer both of Barnesville.

Mrs. Silbernagel Dies at Age 88
Mrs. Adam (Barbara) Silbernagel of Dent died at the St. James hospital on august 11. She was 88 years old. Barbara Seifert, daughter of George and Elizabeth Seifert was born in Perham Township on December 8, 1868. She spent her lifetime in the Dent area. In 1887 she was married to Adam Silbernagel. Eight children were born to this union. One daughter, Elizabeth, one son, Alois, and her husband preceded her in death. Survivors include, six children, Mrs. matt Winkels of Dent, Paul of Perham, Carrie (Mrs. Elvin Malkuson) of Onimia, Joe of Minneapolis, Regina (Mrs. Martin Beringer) of Perham, Frances (Mrs. Charles May) of Minneapolis, one brother, John Seifert of Perham; 35 grandchildren; 117 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Sacred Heart church in Dent on August 14 with Rev. J. Besselaar officiating. Interment was made in the St. Joe cemetery. Pallbearers were Kenneth May, Archie Chaska, Adam Winkels, Ambrose Winkels, Ambrose Berlinger, Arthur and William Silbernagel.

John C. Steinbach, aged 75 years, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Kemper, on Wednesday of last week, of paralysis. Deceased came to this country in 1851 from Germany, and was a resident of this place since 1871. His wife departed this life some eighteen years ago. He left three children, Mrs. Henry Kemper, Mrs. Mike Doll and Enoch Steinback. The relatives have the sympathy of numerous friends in their affection.

DEATH OF JOHN STETCHEN

The short announcement in the BULLETIN last week, of the death of our respected fellow citizen, John Steichen, cast a shadow of gloom over the community. While his sickness was only of short duration, it was expected for nearly a week, by a few, that he would never recover. His old sickness, typhoid fever, returned with increased vigor, and this coupled with mourning over the loss of his wife, which occurred a year previous, hastened his death. Mr. Steichen was born in Luxemburg, Germany, in 1854, and in 1876, came to this country, settling in Stearns County. Having received an excellent education in the old country, he rapidly took up the ways of this, and secured a teacher’s certificate, coming to Otter Tail County in 1878, where he taught school for a number of years. In 1878, he was married to Miss Rosa Gettard, a most estimable lady of Stearns County, and the couple lived happily together until death called her away one year ago. To them were born eight children, who are all living, the eldest being 17 years and the youngest one-year old. In 1897, Mr Steichen took up the reading of law, in Baxter & Dalys office in Perham, teaching school in Rush Lake in the daytime and coming into Perham in the evening and holidays. In 1889 he was admitted to the bar, and began the practice of his chosen profession, the law buying out the practice of C. D. C. Williams. In 1895 he became a member of Perham lodge No. 199, A. O. U. W. taking out an insurance policy of $2000, and in 1896, he took an insurance policy, in the newly organized Woodman lodge for $3000. His will was made Oct 22, 1896 and he bequeathed the entire amount to his children, to be divided equally amongst them. He named as his executors, two most worthy gentlemen, Messrs. Charles Pancratz of Perham and Rt. Rev. Peter Engel, of St. Johns University, Stearns County. He expressed the desire in his will that his children should receive a thorough education. Mr. Steichen, by his many gracious acts endeared himself to all. He was a devoted father and husband, and kind and true friend. No one can truthfully say that he ever betrayed a friend. He was a devout Catholic, and died as he had lived, a Christian. The funeral took place at 10 o’clock from St. Henry’s Church and the remains were followed to the grave by a large number of sorrowing friends.

Esther V. Strehlow
Esther V. Strehlow, 79, Hastings and formerly of Perham, Minnesota, died April 4, 2002, at the Regina Medical Center, Hastings, Minnesota. Visitation was held at the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, Hastings, Minnesota on April 7, 2002. Funeral services took place April 8, at 11:00 am at the St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church of Hastings, MN, with Rev. Percy J. Damrow, officiating. Burial followed at Lakeside Cemetery, under the direction of Caturia-Smid Funeral Home. Esther was born April 15, 1922 to Frank & Agnes (Olthoff) Lubitz in Corliss Township She was born and raised there on a farm, through the years she was baptized, confirmed and united in marriage to Albert H. Strehlow on July 24, 1941 at St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church in Corliss Township Albert died February 10, 1983. In 1950 they moved to Perham, Minnesota. Esther began working in a restaurant until they moved to New Praque Minnesota, in 1955 after 1 1/2 years there they moved to Hastings. In March 1, 1956 Esther began working at Hastings State Hospital which late became a Veteran's home, she worked there 26 1/2 years she retired in 1984. After her retirement she joined the Sunshine Club at her Church and helped make many quilts for the Lutheran Nursing Home. Esther enjoyed sewing, and she also enjoyed alterations in her home. She also did a lot of crocheting, especially afghans. She collected many elephants and displayed them in her home from Alaska, Germany, Spain, Canada, California, Italy, Hawaii, Mexico, Budapest, Hungry & many more that her family and friends would bring back for her. Esther is survived by her daughters Rosella (Gene) Limon of Loveland, CO, Betty (Richard) Ascenbrener of Hastings, MN, Nancy (Richard) Janssen of Denver, CO and Renae (Floyd) Flack of Westminster, CA.; son Larry Strehlow of St. Paul, MN; grandchildren Kris Murto, Marta Limon, Jody Siebenaier and Emily Flack; also her great grandchildren Matthew and Nathan Siebenaler. Esther was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband Albert in 1983, five brothers John, Louie, Clarence, Alfred, & Edward Lubitz. Arrangements were placed in the care of Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, Hastings, Minnesota.
