Richfield fisherman dies on Round Lake

Gerald George Krekelberg

Carbon monoxide poisoning is being blamed for the death of a Richfield ice fisherman on Round Lake Saturday, according to Sheriff Glen Melby. The fisherman was identified as Gerald George Krekelberg, 38. Melby said Krekelberg was fishing alone in a portable fishhouse in Rush Lake Township south of Perham. According to other fishermen in the area, Krekelberg left his fishhouse shortly after 1 p.m. when he began to feel ill. Melby said Krekelberg was using a lantern for warmth in the fishhouse, which had only several small openings for ventilation. Krekelberg walked from his fishhouse to one occupied by Al Benke. Krekelberg sat and talked with Benke for several minutes and then collapsed. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Krekelberg had told Benke he felt ill while he was walking over to Benke's fishhouse and that he had "barely made it." Melby said Country Coroner Mehdi Orandi had ruled out a heart attack as the cause of death.
