Baer

A sad accident occurred at Frazee Monday morning, by which Irvin, aged 3 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gotlieb Baer, lost his life. The little fellow, in company with his father, was watching the loading of spiling, when one of the largest sticks in being moved started to roll and struck the little fellow, knocking him to the ground, and dragging him some distance. He was picked up by his father, and died in his arms before reaching home. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of many friends in their affliction. The funeral took place yesterday from the Catholic Church in Frazee.

John Bahls, Sr.

Wednesday evening last, word was brought into town that John Bahls, Sr. had committed suicide, by hanging at the farm of his son, Charles, in Pine Lake town. The coroner drove out to the place the next morning, and viewed the remains—deeming an inquest unnecessary. It seems that deceased had been living around among his relation the past year, and was of a quarrelsome disposition, not remaining long in one place. He had left the home of his son Charles, where his wife was stopping, the Monday morning previous to the day of suicide and had come into Perham returning to the farm Wednesday noon. Here he had some words with the different members of the family, and after taking his pocket book out of his pocket and putting it in his coat pocket in the house, went into the granary, there taking off his coat, hat and boots, placed a rope, (which by the way he had made himself out of binding twine last winter), around his neck and getting up on the side of one of the bins, had tied the other end of the rope to the floor joist above, and jumped off, a distance of two feet. He was discovered by the daughter-in-law after he had been out of the house about a half-hour, hanging in the position above described. Her husband Charles, was in a field a half mile away, and he was immediately notified, and he with his neighbor Richard Williams and Jack Rablin cut him down, but life was extinct. The whole thing happened in broad daylight, and there was no reason to think there was foul play. The remains were interred in the village cemetery on Friday. Deceased was 63 years old.

Mrs. Jane Bain died last Saturday at her home in Newton. Mrs. Bain was one of our oldest settlers, having lived here for 17 years. She was 54 years old and her remains will be buried at Brainerd.

Mrs. O. H. Barrett of Wadena, mother of Mr. A. H. Barrett, formerly of this place, died at her home last week, at the advanced age of 78 years. Deceased was an admirable lady and had a host of friends who will be pained to learn of her death. She was well known in Perham, having visited here for a number of times.

Gaye Barthel
Funeral services were held for Gaye Barthel on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minn. with Pastor Jon T. Haakana officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Cindy Becker. Special music was provided by Gary Bach. The pallbearers were Jay Barthel, Leon Barthel, Randy Roberts, Richard Rankka, Scott Barthel and Mitch Barthel. The honorary pallbearers were all of Gaye's nieces and nephews. Gaye was laid to rest in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery in Bluffton, Minn. Gaye Debra Barthel was born on December 16, 1956 at the Perham Memorial Hospital in Perham, Minnesota. Her parents are Linda (Nordlund) Roberts and the late Reuben Roberts. Gaye was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills. She grew up in New York Mills and attended the New York Mills High School. On November 23, 1974 Gaye was united in marriage with John Barthel at the St. John's Catholic Church in Bluffton, Minn. Their marriage was blessed three children. Gaye and John have resided in Bluffton, Minn. Gaye was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother who enjoyed crafts, quilting, gardening, bowling, horseshoes, riding horse and music. On October 11, 2002, she passed away at the Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, N.D. at 45 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Gaye in death was her father, Reuben Roberts and sister-in-law, Arlene Roberts. Gaye is survived by her husband of 27 years, John Barthel of Bluffton; daughter, Shawn Barthel of New York Mills; two sons: John Barthel Jr. of Bluffton and Jacob Barthel of Bluffton; grandson, Dustyn; granddaughter, Emma; mother, Linda Roberts of New York Mills; three sisters: Sandy (Leo) Barthel of New York Mills; Corinne (Ed) Mohs of New York Mills; Gina (David) Paavola of New York Mills; five brothers: Don (Jane) Roberts of Silver Bay, Minn.; Darwin (Jean) Roberts of New York Mills; Stephen (Bonnie) Roberts of Wadena; Lynn (Deb) Roberts of New York Mills; Mike (Kari) Roberts of New York Mills; mother-in-law, Katherine Breuer of New York Mills; many other relatives and a host of friends. Mrs. Henry Barthel died last Wednesday evening, after an illness of three weeks. She was the daughter of M. Huss and was reared at St. Joe, the home. She was 24 years old. She leaves a husband and three young children to mourn her loss. The family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community. The remains were interred at St. Joe cemetery last Saturday.

John Bates, of Frazee, died at his home on Saturday morning last from heart disease. He had been around in the morning as usual doing his chores about the house and intended to shortly start for his farm north of that place. His wife had been ailing and while attending her he was stricken down, dying instantly. Mr. B. was taken ill with typhoid fever about one year ago, from which he never fully recovered. He was a man of exemplary habits, and held the distinction of being a man without an enemy, in a community in which he had lived for over thirty years. He leaves a wife and one son, who are nearly heart broken in their bereavement. The remains were laid at rest on Sunday, the funeral being conducted by the Masonic lodge, of which deceased was an honored member. A large delegation was present from Perham and Detroit, Dr. Weeks, of Detroit being in charge of the exercises. Rev. Dr. Tindal, of Walker, but a former pastor of Frazee, preached the funeral sermon and during his discourse there was not a dry eye in the church. Those attending the Masonic funeral in Frazee from this place on Sunday, were: Dr. Berthold, A. Marckel, John Prichett, Dr. Prichett, S. Rasmusson, W. J. Rowland, H. Koenitzer, H. M. Young, W. W. Allen, C. Schrader, Thos. Shaw, L. E. Davison and S. Friedman and wife.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bauck, have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss of their infant son, who departed this life on Thursday morning of last week. The child had been sick for sometime with a complication of diseases and death came as a relief from its suffering. The funeral was held from the brick Lutheran church, on Saturday last, and was largely attended.

Louis Bauck, Well Liked Farmer Passes Away
Louis Bauck, popular resident of Pine Lake Township and Perham for many years, died Sunday at 11:15 p.m. of a heart condition. Mr. Bauck was a highly respected, well liked member of the community. "Louie", as his many friends called him, was a gentleman in all respects. endowed with a friendly personality and sincere character, he made many friends during his lifetime who mourn his passing. Mr. Bauck was born in Perham Township August 27, 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Bauck. He grew to manhood here and was married to Martha Damlo on January 14, 1902 in Perham. They operated a farm in Pine Lake Township until 1945 when he retired and they moved into Perham. Survivors include his wife, four sons, Arthur of New York Mills, Norman of New York Mills, Lampert of Perham and Rupert of Moorhead; two sisters, Mrs. Albert Lehmkuhl of Elrose, Canada and Mrs. Herman Krause of Perham; one brother, Herman of New York Mills. One daughter Bertha (Mrs. Albert Gilbertson) died in 1947. Five sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. He also leaves eleven grandchildren with two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held October 30 from St. Paul's Lutheran church with Rev. Wm. Busse officiating. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Bauck Died In Milwaukee

Widow of Fred Bauck Sr., Passed Away Monday - Body Brought Here For Burial Today
Mrs. Minnie Bauck, widow of Fred Bauck, Sr., died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, about 5:30 a.m., Monday from cerebral hemorrhage. She had been stricken Sunday evening just as she was leaving the home of a friend. She was made as comfortable as possible in anticipation of removal to a hospital in the morning, but a series of hemorrhages followed and death resulted.
Mrs. Bauck was born in Peine, Hanover, Germany, June 14, 1850. Her maiden name was Minnie Eliese Lehmberg. She grew up and was married there to Henry Harbicht. In 1879, with her husband and two children, Eugene and Clara, she came to the America, settling first at Carlinville, Illinois, where they lived two years. They then moved to St. Louis, living for a year and in 1882 came to this locality, locating a few miles south of Big Pine lake. Nine years later they moved to Milwaukee, where Mr. Harbicht died in 1895. April 16, 1898 she was married to Fred Bauck, Sr., and came to live on the home farm where she made her home until about two years ago. Mr. Bauck died in June 1933 and since that time she lived with her children, with Robert in California during the winter of 1933-34 and with other children in Montana and Canada. She spent last summer here and in the fall went to Milwaukee where three of her children reside, making her home with her son Otto. The step children of Mrs Bauck who survive her are William and Henry of Chaplin, Sask., Louise of Pine Lake, Mrs. Albert Lehmkuhl, Pine Lake, (Mrs Albert Lehmkuhl of Elrose, Sask., Mrs Herman Krauss of Perham and Herman of Otto town. Nine children, 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren survive Mrs Bauck. The children are: Eugene of Central Butte, Sask., Clara, Mrs. Barrak of Milwaukee, Henry of Ingomar, Montana, Otto of Milwaukee, Robert of San Pedro, California, Albert of Houghton, Sask., Darwin of Havre, Montana, Walter of Rosetown, Sask., and Arno of Milwaukee. Funeral services were held today. A brief service at the old home at 1 p.m., preceded the service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 1:45. Rev. A. E. Agather conducted services. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends.

Lillian Bauck
Funeral services were held for Lillian Bauck on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minn. with Pastor Jon T. Haakana officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Cindy Becker. Special music was provided by Gary Bach. The pallbearers were Michael Bauck, Matthew Geiser, Derek Geiser, Kenny Geiser, John Ristvedt and Tim Tigges; Lillian's oldest grandsons. Lillian was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in New York Mills, Minn. Lillian Helen Bauck was born on April 14, 1931 at home in Paddock Township, rural Sebeka, Minn. Her parents were the late Abram and Hilma (Pantsari) Siirila. Lillian grew up on the family farm in rural Sebeka. She was able to speak Finnish before she learned English. Lillian attended country school in Paddock Township and in 1948 she graduated from the Sebeka High School. On September 5, 1948 Lillian was united in marriage with Rowland Bauck at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sebeka, Minn. Lillian and Rowland have resided their entire lives and farmed in Otto Township, rural New York Mills, Minn. Lillian was a very kind person and a tremendous hostess, she enjoyed trying new recipes, baking, cooking and playing cards. Lillian had a true love for the New York Mills Community and High School sporting events. She also enjoyed traveling, whether it was to out of town sporting events or her two special trips to Finland. Lillian was a life long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and also belonged to the LWML, V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and Senior Center. She was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, 4-H and County Fair, FFA. On August 2, 2002 Lillian passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, Minn. at 71 years of age. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Lillian in death were her parents; an infant daughter, Delane; sister, Celia Bykonen; eight brothers: Freda, Walter, Art, Toivo, Hugo, Ben, Ted and Arnold. Lillian is survived by her husband of 54 years, Rowland Bauck; six daughters: Dyann (Dennis) Tigges; Dolly (Owen) Tumberg; Donna (Terry) Geiser; Dayla Ristvedt of Perham; Darla (David) Guehna of Perham; Dinee Bauck of Park Rapids; three sons: David (Ruth) Bauck; Duane Bauck; Darin Bauck; 26 grandchildren: Michael (Teri), Camri (David), Stacy (Leonard), Shanna, Tim, Sharnel (Jake), Alicia, Sam, Janae, Jennifer, Josh, Matthew (Natasha), Derek (Jenny), Kenny, Cody, Dustin, John, Paul, Mark, Tiffany, Kendra, Isaiah, Leah, Sierra, Sarah, Michael and Jacob; five great-grandchildren: Zachary, Brady, Evan, Gabriel and Mikayla; a sister, Esther (Irvin) Weappa of Sebeka; four brothers: Ray Siirila of Belle Plaine; Paul (Relma) Siirila of Henning; Fred (Betty) Siirila of Sebeka; Floyd (Arlene) Siirila of Alexandria; four sisters-in-law: Madella Siirila; Laurine Bauck; Enida Siirila of Alexandria; Martha Siirila of Wolf Lake; brother-in-law, Marvin Bauck; many other relatives and a host of friends. Bess Baumer, 78, of Richville, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Maine, with the Rev. Paul Folsom officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m., with parish prayers at 6:30 p.m., at Nilson Funeral Home in Battle Lake and one hour prior to the service at the church. Glende-Johnson-Nelson and Nilson Funeral Home of Battle Lake is in charge of arrangements.

Andy Berg
The angel of death visited this vicinity again on Sunday afternoon and took from our midst Andy Bert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Berg. He was 27 years of age and leaves a wife and two small children, who with the other relatives greatly mourn his loss. Deceased had been a patient sufferer more than a year with the dread disease consumption, and death came as a relief to his sufferings. Andy was very much liked by all who knew him, being a member of the Forrester lodge and a devout member of the Catholic church. The funeral occurred Wednesday morning, the remains being followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives. The sympathy of all is extended.

Charlotte Berg

Funeral services were held for Charlotte Berg of Perham, MN on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 at the Karvonen and Son Funeral Home in New York Mills with Rev. Don Salo officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, New York Mills, Minnesota. Charlotte Evelyn Berg was born September 17, 1923 in Buhl, MN. Her parents were the late Ernest A. and Hilda M. (Johnson) Barratt. She grew up in New York Mills and graduated from the New York Mills High School in 1941. She worked with Mayor John and Lena Mark at the Merchant’s Hotel in New York Mills for many years. Charlotte moved to Oakland, CA where she worked in the shipyards as an electrician before returning to Minnesota. On July 25, 1945 she was united in marriage with Arnold Berg in Duluth, Minnesota. Arnold worked for the city of Duluth until 1951. In 1951 the Berg’s moved to Oakland, CA and then to Sacramento in 1952. In 1977 they moved to Pine Lake Township for their retirement. Charlotte worked at Tuffy’s in Perham as a bookkeeper until she retired in 1982. Her favorite hobby was needle work, she was a blue ribbon winner at the East Otter Tail County Fair in Perham. She also enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished organist and vocalist. She was a Senior Volunteer and a member of the Charles D. Center VFW Post #3289 Auxiliary of New York Mills, Minnesota. On June 23, 1999 Charlotte passed away at Merit Care Hospital in Fargo, ND at 75 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Marlene; two brothers, Clayton and Floyd; two sisters, Violet and Winnifred; and a grandson, David. Survivors include her husband, Arnold Berg of Perham, MN; son, Douglas Berg of Perham, MN; grandson, Jim (Tammy) Gillespie of rural Buffalo, NY; four great-grandchildren, Brittany, Zach, Dillon and Brandon; also many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Death of Matt Berg
Another one of Perham's popular young men, died, Monday evening. Matt Berg, who has been a patient sufferer from that dread disease, consumption, for more than a year, passed to that great beyond surrounded by a loving wife and children and numerous other relatives, dying as he had lived, a devout Catholic. Matt., as he was popularly called, had reached the age of only 29 years, the most of which had been passed in this vicinity, where al who knew him loved him for his many noble qualities. He was devoted to his family and friends and would at any time contribute to the relief of the poor and distressed. A few short years ago he was married to Miss Schultz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred. Schultz, of Gormantown, two children having been born as a result of the union. These as well as the father and mother, sisters and brothers, are extended the heart felt sympathies of the entire community. The funeral was held from St. Henrys church, yesterday, and was under the charge of the Catholic Order of Forresters, of which deceased was an honored member, the remains being escorted to their last resting place in St. Henrys cemetery, by a large concourse of friends. The Bulletin extends its sympathies to the bereaved family.

Nellie Berg
The Bulletin is again called upon to announce the death of another daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nic Berg, it being Miss Nellie, who passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning in the eighteenth year of her age. Deceased had been ailing for some time, being afflicted with that dread disease consumption. During her entire illness she had been ever patient and when the angel of death knocked it from her ready to accompany it, dying as she had lived, a devout Catholic. Miss Nellie had lived in this community from childhood, aid by her kind and pleasant manners had drawn about her a large circle of young friends, who with many older ones extend to the heart broken parents and few remaining brothers and sister, their keenest sympathy. For they are entitled to it. One by one there has passed to the great beyond within the past two years, four members of this family, all afflicted with the same disease. All known remedies have been tried, but without avail. The funeral was held from St. Henrys church yesterday, and was largely attended.

Mrs. J. L. Berthold, on Tuesday, received a telegram announcing the death of her mother, which took place at the home in York, Pennsylvania, that morning. The cause of death was from general debility, resulting from old age the deceased being in her 89th year. The sympathy of numerous friends is extended to Mrs. Berthold, in her bereavement.

Leo Anton Bistrom age 81, of Perham, Minn., died on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at the Staples Care Center in Staples, Minn. Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham, Minn., on Friday, February 9, 2001. Reverend Terry Grzybowski officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Leo was born in Dent, Minn., on February 12, 1919 to Adam and Leona (Stotts) Bistrom. He moved at the age of five years with his family to Dead Lake Township, rural Dent, Minn. where he was raised and attended country school in District #239. On April 27, 1942, Leo and Evelyn Ebeling were united in marriage in Perham, Minn. They farmed in Dead Lake Township until 1995. At that time, Leo and Evelyn moved into Perham. Among the many activities Leo enjoyed were hunting, fishing, cutting wood and playing cards. He was a member of Emmauel Lutheran Church in Dent, Minn. where he served as head usher, trustee and was a member of the mens club. Leo traveled to the Worlds Fair in Knoxville, Tenn. Leo entered the Staples Care Center in 1998. Surviving Leo is his wife, Evelyn, of Perham, Minn.; two sons, Joe (Carole) Bistrum, of Bellbrook, Ohio and Jim (Elaine) Bistrum, of Perham, Minn.; one sister, Edna Laney, of Perham, Minn.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Leo was preceded in death by his parents and his step-father, Al Smith. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, Minn., was in charge of the arrangements.

Miss Lottie Bixby, aged 13 years, died at the residence of her parents, in the town of Dead Lake, on Saturday last, after an illness of only two days. The young lady was a great favorite among her young friends, who will sorely miss her. In her home she was greatly attached to her parents, brothers and sisters, and they have the sympathy of friends. The remains were interred in the cemetery in the town of Amor on Monday, and were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends.

O. Bjor

        Coroner Davidson was called to Battle Lake, Tuesday, by telegram, announcing finding of the dead body of O. Bjor. The body was found, by the coroner, lying in the parlor of the deceased’s residence, with the top of his head completely shot away and small pieces of the skull, scalp and brain scattered about the room. By the side of the body laid a double barrel shot gun, with an empty shell in the left-hand barrel. Pieces of the brain and blood were spattered on the walls and ceiling. Deceased had slept on the lounge the night previous, while his wife and family slept upstairs. The wife was awakened in the early morn by the report of a gun, and went into an adjoining room and requested her brother to ascertain the reason.  Upon going down he was horrified to find his relative lying dead. Deceased was one of the most respected businessmen of Battle Lake, and was proprietor of a general store. His financial affairs were in good condition, while his domestic life of the most pleasant, being surrounded by a loving wife and family of eight beautiful children, and no cause can be assigned for his rash deed, which unquestionably was suicide, other than that he committed it while temporarily insane. Insanity evidently ran in his family, as his father committed suicide, and a sister at one time attempted to take her own life.  An inquest was deemed unnecessary and the body was turned over to the family. Deceased was a member in good standing of the Workmen and Woodmen lodges, under whose auspices he was buried yesterday.

Adolph A. Blom 1919 – 2001- Funeral services were held Thursday, January 25, 2001 at Kapala-Glodek Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis for Adolph A. Blom of Minneapolis, and formerly of New York Mills, Minnesota. He passed away Saturday, January 20, 2001 at University Hospital in Minneapolis. Officiating was Reverend Donald Salo. Casket bearers were Richard Korby, Ronald Jacobson, Larry (Red) Jacobson, Paul Jacobson, Dan Welter and Darin Welter. Adolph was born April 4, 1919 at New York Mills to Peter and Anna (Hoythya) Blom. He entered the Armed Services in 1941 and served in the European Theatre during World War II. He married Jeanne Burnette on December 29, 1945 and one son, Arnie, was born to this union. Adolph was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Walfred, Rudolph and Waino; sisters, Edna, Mildred, Selma, Mayme and Julia. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; son, Arnie; sisters: Emily Piilolo of Duluth, Elsie Tervola of Reeseville, WI, and Bernice (George) Jacobson of Ottertail, MN; 2 sisters-in-law, Eldora Blom of New York Mills and Laina Blom of Perham; and many nieces and nephews.       Interment was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

The funeral service for Edith Boedigheimer, 85, Perham, MN was held on Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at the St. Henrys Catholic Church, Perham with Father David Rieder officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. She passed away on Friday, July 23, 1999 in her home. Edith Mary Ronnebaum was born the daughter of John and Mary (Peterson) Ronnebaum on April 24, 1914 in Two Inlets, MN. There she was raised and attended school. She worked as a housekeeper in the Osage, MN area. She then moved to Perham where she continued to work as a housekeeper. She was united in marriage to Raymond W. Boedigheimer on October 23, 1937 in St. Henrys Catholic Church, Perham. They moved to California for a short time and then moved back to Perham. In 1953, she started Fun Fair at St. Henrys Catholic School. She worked as a clerk for Red Owl, Hartz and Perham Bakery. Raymond passed away on March 23, 1980. She is survived by one son, David of Perham; two daughters: Mary (Charles) Babcock of Excelsior, MN, and Nancy Boedigheimer of Minneapolis, MN; one brother, Robert (Verena) Ronnebaum of Nimrod, MN; three grandchildren, Jody, Robert and Tamara and three great grandchildren, Brandon, Maxwell and Isabelle. Arrangements were made with Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, MN.

Josephine Rose Boedigheimer, age 102, passed away Monday, March 19, 2001 at her home in St. Paul, Minn. Born February 10, 1899 to John and Mary (Goetz) Krueger in Winsted, Minn., she was the 8th of 14 children and was the last surviving member of this family. Josephine was raised in the Perham area after her parents moved here in 1904. She married Hugo J. Boedigheimer on June 21, 1920 at St. Henrys Catholic Church and had five children. In 1952, they moved to St. Paul, Minn. where she remained until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo J., on August 8, 1986; son, Leonard A., killed in WWII on November 2, 1944; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Boedigheimer of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Reviewal was Thursday, March 22nd at Willwerscheid and Peters Mortuary in St. Paul, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, March 23rd, 10:00 a.m. at St. Columba Catholic Church in St. Paul with Fr. Daniel C. Colin officiating. Graveside services were held at St. Henrys Catholic Cemetery on Friday, March 23rd at 2:45 p.m. with Fr. David J. Rieder officiating. Pallbearers were Cody Fog, Josy Fog, Steven Fog, Kyle White, Kara White and Steven White.

Stephen Francis Boedigheimer, age 50, resident of Perham, Minn., died of cancer on Wednesday, June 28, 2000 at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Rush Lake near Perham, Minn. on July 1, 2000. Rev. Jerry Nordick officiated. Burial following in the church cemetery. Steve was born on November 3, 1949 in Perham, Minn., the son of Carl and Helen (Belka) Boedigheimer. He moved with his family to Cottonwood, Minn. in 1953 and returned to Perham with his family in 1963. Steve graduated from Royalton High School in 1968. He was most recently employed with Schifsky and Sons Construction in St. Paul, Minn. as a truck driver. Steve was kind, warm-hearted, a loving person, good friend and a fantastic brother and son. He was fun to be around and always had a story to share. His laugh was contagious as well as unique. He loved to spend time with his nieces and nephews. Steve’s favorite avocation was woodworking. He had made many wonderful items for his family and friends; each item was crafted with love and will always be treasured. His most impressive project was the retirement home/workshop he built on the Otter Tail River. Steve spent his final days enjoying his house and the families of geese that moved in and became his pets. His favorite expression was, “One more cigarette, one more cup of coffee and then we are going to hit it.” Survivors include his mother, Helen of Perham, Minn.; seven siblings: Michael (Sue) of Marshall, Minn., Tom of Hudson, Wis., Greg of Perham, Minn., Mary (Darrell) Melo of Perham, Larry of Stillwater, Minn., Diane (Jeff) Aschnewitz of Fergus Falls, Minn. and Carla (Bryon) Cronk of Fergus Falls, Minn.; twenty nieces and nephews; six great-nieces and nephews and four godchildren: Laurie Ann Larsen, Amanda Aschnewitz, Bob Boedigheimer, and Adri Marones; twenty nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and nephews. Preceding Steve in death is his father, Carl, and one brother, Marc. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, Minn. was in charge of arrangements.

On Friday evening, July 13th, at his home one mile west of Perham, Mr. Christian Boegenschiltz, aged 45 years. The news of Mr. Boegenschiltz' death caused considerable surprise, for the deceased was a highly respected and an honorable citizen of this vicinity. Thus it may be seen that his death is not merely a family affliction but also a public sorrow. The cause of death was yellow jaundice, which disease contracted nearly two years ago. Everything was done to alleviate the suffering, but death, that triumphant invisible monster, was bound to be victorious, and carried his noble life, with sparkled glee, beyond the line of earthly recapture. Deceased came to this country twenty years ago, and has ever since been occupied as a farmer, at which he was very successful. He was married and leaves an accomplished wife and eight children, mostly girls, ranging from 18 years to 11 months. The loss to them is irreparable and the public cannot sympathize too much for their misfortune. The funeral occurred Sunday from St. Henry's church, Rev. Fr. Pfeiffer, officiating. The church choir furnished excellent music to sooth and lighten the burden of the afflicted family. It was the largest funeral ever witnessed in Perham, which leads one to think that the public deeply regrets the loss of this most beloved personage.

Carl H. Bohne Is Found Dead - Aged Recluse of Gormantown Succumbs to Old Age - Burial Made From Frazee Church
Carl Henry Bohne, bachelor recluse of Gormantown, was bound dead in his small log cabin Monday morning. He apparently had died during the night, as he was all right Sunday when seen by Herman Schulz, who had been looking after him. Deputy Coroner W. A. Miller of New York Mills was called and certified his death as due to old age. Bohne was a single man. He was 76 years, 11 months old, having been born May 22, 1858. For the past thirty years he had lead the life of a recluse, only occasionally coming to town. He had several nephews in the neighborhood, one in Frazee taking charge of the body, which was brought to the mortuary here. The funeral will be held at the Methodist church in Frazee. Bohne sold his farm lands to Schulz sometime ago but continued to live in a small log cabin, the only furniture in which consisted of two stoves. He seemed to crave nothing more than the necessities that sustain life, comforts apparently he did not consider.

William Boogaard, age 76, of rural Osakis, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at his home under the care of his family and hospice. Mass of Christian Burial was August 2, 2002, at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Glenwood with Fr. Thomas Becker officiating. Interment followed. William "Bill" Anthony Boogaard, the son of George and Johanna (Ruijs) Boogaard, was born is Sisseton, S.D. on August 25, 1925. Bill lived in Browns Valley, Minn. until his family moved to Butler, Minn. in 1928. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school in Butler. He entered active duty with the US Army in December of 1945 and served until January 1947 when he was honorably discharged. He served as an Infantryman in the Air Transport Command and was stationed in Greenland and Iceland. In 1950, Bill married Evelyn Rutten at the Holy Cross Church in Butler. They lived in Minneota, Minn., where he worked with construction of the local school building. They moved to a farm south of Minneota, Minn. where they lived until 1955 when a tornado destroyed their farmhouse and buildings. They then moved to a farm near Porter, Minn. where they lived until they bought their prsent farm north of Villard, Minn. in 1960. Bill served on the Cenex Board of Directors in Villard from 1974 to 2001. He served on the Runestone Electric Association Board of Directors from 1984 to present. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Villard where he served on the church council. He was past member of the Knights of Columbus and was currently a member of the Villard American Legion. He enjoyed farming all his life, took pride in a hard days work, and enjoyed having his family around as much as possible. He died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at home at the age of 76. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family. Bill is survived by his wife Evelyn of Osakis, three daughters: Carol (Ralph) Gaffaney of Alexandria, Minn., JoAnn (Terry) Bot of Glenwood, Minn., and Donna (Gary) Dold of St. Cloud, Minn.; four sons: Bob (fiance, Betty Kuusisto) of Villard, Minn., Dave of Osakis, Ken (Barb) of Osakis and Ron (Bonnie) of Elrosa, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Van Erp of Perham; three brothers: Albert of Minneota, Minn., John of Osakis, Clarence of Marshall; and many nieces and nephews. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Cornelius 'Con' and Henry, two sisters, Helen Van Erp and Wilma Harrison. Casketbearers will be Bill's oldest grandchildren Brian and Alan Gaffaney, Tim Boogaard, Mark and Douglas Bot and Gregory Dold.

Funeral services for Joanna Letich Bope, age 74, of Ottertail Lake, rural Richville, Minn., were held Saturday, August 3, 2002, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ottertail, Minn., with Reverend Timothy Vaughan officiating. Burial followed in the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Amor Township, rural Battle Lake, Minn. Joanna died at her home July 31, 2002. Joanna was born July 24, 1928, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Clement and Gudrun (Hulteng) Letich. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School. On September 10, 1949, Joanna was united in marriage to Jeane Stanton Bope in Grand Forks, N.D. Joanna attended college at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, graduating in 1953. She received her Masters in Education degree from McAllister College in St. Paul, Minn. Following this, she taught in Concord, Calif., Rush City, Minn. and Henning, Minn. Joanna was the first female Patent Agent in the state of Minnesota. Surviving Joanna is her daughter, Sue (David) Sethre of Ottertail, Minn.; two sons, Rob of Richville, Minn. and Dave of Burtonsville, Md; five grandchildren, Bryan, Nick, Julie, Katie, and Chris and one brother, Wayne of Richville, Minn. Preceding Joanna in death is her husband, Jeane, in 1999. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, was in charge of the arrangements.

John Brasel Dies At Wesley Hospital
John Frederick Brasel passed away at Wesley hospital in Wadena on November 8 at the age of 82 years and 8 months. He was born at Danville, Illinois on February 20, 1875 and at the age of 7 came to Minnesota with his parents where they settled on a farm near Perham. On March 9, 1902 he was united in marriage to Emma Fresonke also of Perham. They farmed most of their married life in Otter Tail County until 1951 when they retired and moved to Wadena. Twelve children were born to this union: Louie at home, (Helen) Mrs. Henry Brasel of Fargo, Martin of Deer Creek, (Elsie) Mrs. Clayton Primasing of Lebanon, Oregon, (Marie) Mrs. Frank Breuer of Bluffton, Mrs. Hilda Breuer of Wadena, John Jr., of Menahga, (Dora) Mrs Lyle Christensen of Big Lake, (Laura) Mrs. Sam Wain of Wadena, Alvin of Wadena, who with their mother survive a kind husband and father. Two daughters preceded their father in death. Besides his wife and ten children he is survived by 49 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Henry and Herman of Perham. Mr. Brasel was better known as Grandpa John to the children in the neighborhood and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Although failing health had kept him home the last few months, he was up and around until October 14 when he was taken to the hospital for treatment of the flu. On Thursday he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. He passed away at 6:20 p.m. on Friday, November 8. Funeral services were conducted at the St. John's Lutheran church in Wadena on November 12 and he was laid to rest in the Wadena cemetery. Mrs. Edwin Piepkorn accompanied, by Mrs. Walt Schmidt, sang "Abide With Me" and "Come Ye Disconsolate". Pallbearers were Harold Kautz, Harold Lemkuhl, Otto Goedel, Ed Kover, Ernest Kath and Leonard Damlo.

Funeral services were held for Mary (Betty) Tisdell Brennan of Price, Utah, on Saturday, March 27, 1999 at the Mitchell Chapel. Committal service was held at the Price City Cemetery, Price, Utah. Mary (Betty) Tisdell Brennan was born February 26, 1908 in New York Mills, MN to James and Josephine (Neuens) Tisdell. She married Thomas C. Brennan on February 26, 1949 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died on December 25, 1982. Mary passed away March 23, 1999 in a Price Hospital at the age of 91 years. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers Clem and James; and sisters, Louella and Evelyn. Survivors include two sisters, Anne O. Hartig of Monticello, MN and Josephine (Paul) Otis of Naples, FL; sister-in-law, Hilma Tisdell of New York Mills, MN; many nieces and nephews and a community of dear friends.

Brakeman Killed
John A. Bridgeman Falls Under Wheels and is Terribly Mangled.
John A. Bridgeman, a brakeman on the Minnesota & International received fatal injuries at the landing near the Brainerd Lumber Company’s mill on Monday afternoon. He came down the line Monday afternoon on a log train, and the accident occurred he was assisting in switching the log train onto the landing on the north side of the river. While standing on a car when going over the bridge across the river he slipped and fell upon the track. The long train of cars passed over his legs, severing them from his body, and his skull was also fractured in falling. He was still alive when picked up and was taken at once to the N. P. Sanitarium where he died the same evening at 8:30 o’clock. The unfortunate man was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Bridgeman and was 2_  years of age. He had been working on the M. & I for about a year and half. The funeral took place on Thursday morning at 9 o’clock from St. Francis church, and was largely attended. The afflicted family have the sincere sympathy of all in their sad bereavement

Death of Mrs. D. R. Gorman

The bulletin is called upon this week to announce the death of Mrs D. R. Gorman, of Merriam Park, St. Paul, which occurred on Friday last. Mrs Gorman has been an invalid for a number of years, and during that time has been at death’s door repeatedly. With the loving care of devoted sisters and husband, and the best of medical attention, she had been able to retain her hold upon life, until the wasted frame from so much suffering could stand the strain no longer, and the spirit returned to the God who gave it, as a relief. She died as she had lived a devout catholic. It seems but a few short years ago that Mrs Gorman, then Miss Katie Bridgeman, was a resident among us, where she had a host of friends, drawn about her by her happy disposition and winning ways and it hardly seems possible that she has been called to that great home beyond. But what is born, must die. In the prime of life she has been called to that great home beyond. But was is born, must die. In the prime of life she has been called away, never to return to flesh, but her spirit is among the dear ones left behind. Her life had been lived for those she loved and could assist. Her hand was ever open to the poor and needy, none ever applying to her for relief and being turned away without receiving it. As a neighbor, she was ever accommodating. As a wife and mother she was devotion itself. As a sister she was ready at all times to bear the others burdens. Nearly twelve years ago she was married to Mr. D. R. Gorman, and for a couple of years lived on the Pacific coast, when they returned to Perham where they resided three years, afterwards moving to St. Paul, where they have since remained. Six children, the eldest of whom is ten years and youngest three years, are left without a mothers care and love, and with a heart broken husband and father, will mourn the departed wife and mother. The brothers and sisters, of whom there are four left, Mrs. Shea, of Perham, Miss Maggie Bridgman, of St. Paul, and Messrs. Pat and John Bridgman, of Brainerd are nearly heart broken in their sorrow. For they were devoted to her, and she to them. The remains were brought to Perham Saturday afternoon, and were tenderly watched over by friends, until Sunday afternoon, when they were interred in St. Henrys cemetery, services being held in the church. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Perham a number of friends coming from a distance to pay their last respects to a dearly beloved and departed friend. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved relatives.

Sadie Marie (Maki) Brockhoff (AKA: ANN BROCKHOFF)

Graveside funeral services for Ann Brockhoff, age 99, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000 at 11 a.m. in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Perham, Minn. She died on Saturday, September 16 in her home in Woodside, Calif. She was formerly of Perham. Arrangements are provided by the Schoeneberger Funeral Home in Perham, Minnesota. Sadie Marie Maki was born on March 22, 1915 in New York Mills, Minn. She was born to the late Selma Ruikka. Sadie grew up and lived in rural New York Mills her entire life. On February 9, 1037 Sadie was united in marriage with Eino Hjalmer Maki in New York Mills, Minn. Sadie and Eino farmed in rural New York Mills until retiring in 1976. They also ran a bait shop for ten years at their home. Eino passed away on January 15, 1995. Sadie has been a resident of the Elders’ Home in New York Mills since the fall of 1995. Sadie loved to ice fish, raise produce in her garden, play the accordion, cards, bingo at the VFW and visit with friends. On September 1, 2000, Sadie passed away at the Elders’ Home in New York Mills, Minn. at 85 years of age. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Sadie was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband and three infant daughters. Sadie is survived by her son, William (Uvada) Maki of Dent; four grandchildren: Russell (Connie) Maki of Webster, N.D.; Roxann (Edward) Eischens of Two Inlets; Renee (Timothy) Wilmes of Madison Lake; Katherine (Darren) Bridgman of Lake George; numerous cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. A. W. Brown, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. M. M. Norris, on Saturday last, at the advanced age of 74 years. Deceased has been sick only for the past three weeks, and death came unexpectedly. He was a kindly gentleman with many friends who will sincerely mourn his death. The funeral was held from the M. E. church, Monday afternoon, the remains being taken the same night to the old home in Plato, McLeod County, where they will be placed beside those of his wife, who died 18 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Norris, and son Wilbur F. Brown of Star Lake, accompanied the body.

Passed To The Great Beyond
Otto Bruggeman, familiarly known in this place as the old hunter died on Thursday evening last, aged 85 years. His life history would make interesting reading if it were fully known. To some young friends in this place, he told that when he lived in the old country, he was a poacher, and one night was caught by the officers, to make his escape he was compelled to shoot one of them in the legs, and he then came direct to this country, more than fifty years ago. At the time of the rebellion he joined the union forces and was wounded a number of times, but not seriously, and served until the close of war. Just when he came to this neighborhood, no one seems to fully know. The oldest inhabitant remembers finding him living in a shanty with his dog for company on the river bank where the bridge crosses the Red river near Backs farm. About twenty years ago he moved into Perham with his dog, and has lived here since, depending upon his gun for a living until he received a pension. For several years he was nearly blind, relying upon his dog to lead him about. An operation of the eyes relieved him so that for the past couple of years he has been able to see. A good deal of pressure was brought to bear upon him, to go to the soldiers home, but he refused positively, giving as a reason that he preferred his liberty, and would never be confined in a prison. He could not be made to think differently. For the past month he has been confined to his bed with sickness and he has received care and attention from friends relatives he had none in this country. His death was a relief from his sufferings. The funeral was held from the frame Lutheran church, Saturday afternoon and was largely attended.

Arthur “Art” George Buendiger, age 97, died at Perham Memorial Hospital, Perham, Minn., on Monday, January 29, 2001. Funeral services were at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham on Friday, February 2, 2001. Reverend Terry Grzybowski will officiate. Burial followed in the Perham Village Cemetery, Perham, Minnesota. One of eleven children, Art was born to Henry and Emma (Herman) Buendiger in Perham, Minn., on December 1, 1903. He and Caroline Trieglaff were wed on November 4, 1934 in Alexandria, Minn. and celebrated sixty-six years of marriage. From 1931 to 1940, Art worked at the Bever Palzer Meat Market in Perham, followed by a two-year employment at Perham Coop Oil Company. In 1942, Art began his twenty-seven years as an employee of Perham Jobbing Company and became a partner in 1944. For the next twenty-five years, from 1972 to 1997, Art worked as a bill collector for Bylander Transportation, Inc. of Vergas, Minn. Art was very outgoing and enjoyed meeting and talking with people. He was well liked by many people throughout his working career. Art liked to be at the lake with his children, Lois and Dave, and their families during summer vacations, although, he didn’t like to fish or swim. Art also enjoyed trips to Florida with his son, David, and his family and trips out west with his daughter, Lois, and her family. In his late 60’s, Art took up golfing and won the first Senior Club Tournament at the Perham Lakeside Golf Course in 1989. He also liked bowling, baseball and football.  Art is survived by his wife, Caroline, of Perham, Minn.; daughter, Lois, of Speedway, Ind.; son, David, of Shoreview, Minn.; five grandchildren, Diana, Jeff, Janelle, Julie and Greg and two great-grandchildren, Angelia and Anthony.  Art was always very considerate of others and their well-being. He always wanted to know if there was anything he could do to help out. Art was a special, well-loved father and grandfather. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Buhr
Henry Bauck, on Saturday night received a telegram from Milwaukee, from Mrs. Buhr, stating that her husband, Fred Buhr, was killed by accident, and that the funeral would be held Wednesday. Mr. Buhr will be remembered as a former resident of this place, being engaged in the machine business.

Joseph Buhr
A telegram was received by Henry Bauck, yesterday morning, stating that Joseph Buhr, well known in Perham was accidentally killed the day before at West Superior, and that the funeral would be held at Milwaukee, Saturday. There were no further particulars, but as it is known that Joe had been railroading, he probably met his death from that.

Mr. Burfield of Star Lake met with a sad death the 5^th. He and his son were milling and logging in here, and the old gentleman had on a fine load, which tipped over burying him underneath. With almost super human strength his son got the logs off him, and to the nearest house. It is supposed the poor old man was killed instantly. His remains were taken to Star Lake for burial. He was 60 years old.

Murray Y. Burns, 89, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Underwood, died Friday Sept. 15, 2000, at Lake Region Hospital.  He was born on March 2, 1911, in Maine Township, the son of James and Hattie (York) Burns. On Aug. 8, 1935, he married Verona Tetzlaff. After their marriage, the couple lived in Dent. From 1939 to 1953, they operated the Burns Store in Maine Township. In 1953, they moved to Oxford, Wis., where Mr. Burns worked at Carl C. Crane Inc. for the next six years. In 1957, he began working for Ace Telephone Association in Houston, Minn. He worked there until his retirement in 1975 and in 1977, they moved to Underwood. Mr. Burns was a member of Maine Presbyterian Church in Maine. Preceding him in death were his wife, Verona, who died on June 4, 1989; two brothers, Charles Burns, and Maurice Burns; and two sisters, Flora Wood and Frone Rasumsson. Survivors include his son, Gary (Judith) Burns of Alamogordo, N.M.; two granddaughters, Melanie (John) Mobley of Hale, Mich., and Christine Burns of Alamogordo; two great-grandsons, William of Michigan, and Brennan of Alamogordo; one great-granddaughter, Sarah of Michigan; and two sisters, Ivy Fogard of Underwood and Ann Jones of Utah; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor's choice. Visitation: Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Last Friday, Geo. C. Bush, received a telegram from Seattle conveying to him the sad announcement of the sudden death of his brother Charlie, of heat disease. No further particulars have been received at this time. Charlie lived here for a number of years and was employed in his brothers barber shop. The announcement of his death was a great surprise to his many old friends, among whom it was not known that he had for years had heart trouble. He left here six years ago for the west and has worked at his trade in Seattle ever since. He leaves a wife and one child in Seattle, and two children by a former marriage who are with their grand mother, formerly Mrs. Yourex of Richwood, now Mrs. R. Bennett of Garnett Kansas. He was 36 years of age, and when seen recently by Mrs. Day and Mrs. Hoit when they were on their western trip, he was apparently in the best of health.

Stanley Bystol, 81, of rural Elbow Lake, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at his home.
