Obituary of John Gerdes

After a lingering sickness John Gerdes passed out of this world on the 9th of September. The cause of his death was tumor. The funeral rites were conducted in the Ev. Lutheran Trinity church of Brewster, Rev. H. Krieger officiating. The sermon was preached in both the English and the German languages and was based upon the text recorded in the 23 chapter of Saint Luke, verses 42 and 42. Very many friends were present to pay him their last tribute of respect and love. Interment was in the Lutheran cemetery.

John Gerdes was born February 22, 1851 in Stapel near Remels in Eastern Fresia, there he was baptized and confirmed. In the year 1872-1873 he fought in the Franco-Prussian war. He came to America in 1875 and settled near Minonk, Illinois. He came to Minnesota in 1900. One brother in Germany and a sister in Flanagan, Illinois, survive.

He married Helen Leenerts on Aug. 15, 1879, in Livingston county, Ill. Fourteen children were born to them of which five died in their infant years. His life-mate, Mrs. J. Gerdes, eight children and twelve grandchildren mourn his death. We extend to them our sincerest sympathies.
