Page updated: Monday, 10-Sep-2018 15:35:18 MDTMrs. Helen Gerdes Source: "Lakefield Standard" Lakefield, MN Date: January 17, 1935 Mrs. Helen Gerdes Dies Saturday Funeral Service Held Wednesday Afternoon Laid to Rest Beside Her Husband in Local Lutheran Cemetery Mrs. Helen Gerdes, age 74 years, passed away suddenly Saturday afternoon, Jan. 12, at 4:30, at the home of her son, Frank and family, at Wahkon, Minn. Her death came as a shock to her children, relatives and friends as, although she had been in failing health for a number of years, recently her condition had been judged as improving. Helen Lienderts was born on June 16, 1860, in Livingston county, Monouk,(sp) Illinois. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. H. Dageforde on March 25, 1877. In 1879 she was united in marriage to John F. Gerdes. Together with her husband and family, she moved to Brewster from Illinois in 1900 and has resided here ever since with the exception of the last few years during which time she has spent with her children in the northern part of the state. Her husband, John Gerdes, passed away Sept. 9, 1920. Mrs. Gerdes leaves to mourn her loss, six children: Frank, of Wahkon, Hie, of Brewster, John and George, of Melrose, Lena Ober, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Fred Besser, of Brewster; seventeen grandchildren and one great grand child. Five children born to Mr. and Mrs. John Gerdes died in infancy. The remains were sent here from Wahkon for burial. Funeral services were held at the Fred Besser home in Brewster at 1:30, and at the German Lutheran church, of which she was a member, here at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan., 16. Rev. Wm. Sutterer, pastor of the German Lutheran church, officiated. Interment was made by the side of her husband in the Lutheran cemetery, Brewster. Out of town relatives attending the last rites here Wednesday were all the children of Mrs. Gerdes and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peters, of Okabena, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ackerman, of Lakefield, and Mr. and Mrs. John Weichman, of Worthington.
