Nelson, Evan -- emigrated in 1853 from Norway -- first lived in Wiota, WI -- later moved to Moscow Twp., Freeborn County
Johnson, Peter (or Peder Johannson) -- owned the farm TRILLERUD, stre Toten, Norway
Mathias Johnson m. Amelia Nelson in 1880. He owned a general goods store, was bought out by Amelia's brothers, and became Nelson Bros. Department Store.
A side note on the Johnson family's Norwegian farm name, Trillerud: My middle name and my mother's middle name is Telrud. I have always known that it was a misspelled family name. My grandmother thought it was too long and shortened it! I have been searching for the name Telrud when visiting in Norway or when meeting a Norwegian but no one had ever heard of it. This past summer I met a Norwegian who told me that "rud" meant "farm", like a family farm, not a large estate. Then I found out about the 1865 Norwegian census on-line. I searched under farm names and found my farm! Knowing the names of the children helped too.

Searching for information regarding Lovane Burdette CRANDALL family. He was married to Alta Elsa CHAMPLIN 18 November 1873. Their children were: Mary Elvira, Frank Eldred and Chester Burdette (my great-grandfather). It has become apparent that they lived in Albert Lea for some amount of time. I'd like any information concerning the family that anyone may have.
I am looking for any records or information concerning Charles Albert BLY, who was born in Freeborn County, the town of Shellrock, to be exact. His father was Alvin R. Bly; his mother was Estelle (maiden name something like EIGH). My information says that Alvin was a steel worker and Estelle was a nurse. She was originally from New York. Charles eventually moved to Louisiana. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am searching for information on Thomas Marion EDDIE, who was born 9/03/1839 in Wisconsin and died 02/16/1863 in Freeborn County, Minnesota. He possibly lived in Manchester but may have died in Albert Lea. His wife, Lavica, gave birth to twins, George and Sarah, in Albert Lea, October 30 of the same year Thomas died. I would like to know how Thomas died and where he is buried. I would appreciate any responses.
I am looking for parents, siblings, marriage date or other information for my great-great-grandparents: William Nathaniel MONTGOMERY, b. 18 Oct 1844, Morgantown, Monongalia Co., VA. He married Anna Elizabeth McKINSIE, b. 25 July 1845, Berne, Switzerland. They had Gar, Frank, John Oliver, Ethel Erma, and DeWitt Talmedge. I don't know where Gar and Frank were born; I think John Oliver was born in Albert Lea in 1874 and that DeWitt and Ethel Erma were born in Jefferson, IA.
We were told that our Montgomerys were German businessmen and that Anna Elizabeth McKinsie taught in the University of Berlin (could be University of Bern) and that she spoke seven languages. I don't know where or when she came to the USA or anything about her before she married William.
Thanks to the wonderful volunteers who make on-line family research possible. My name and address are: Margaret Montgomery Witt, Route 2, Box 421, Grandfield, OK 73546 -- phone: 580/479-5729 -- e-mail: [email protected] or [email protected].
I am looking for any information about Edwin MORGAN or his wife, Elizabeth BANNING. All I know is that they had a son by the name of James Morgan, born in Albert Lea and raised by an aunt, May BOLES. I don't know why she raised him, though. The marriage license I have for Edwin and Elizabeth (dated April 4, 1858) said they lived in "Teris/Terrie Lake City" -- it's hard to read. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Darla Doyle

ADDITION TO QUERY POSTED 14 APR 2000 . . . I am researching my HUTCHINSON surname. I have just been given more old family photos and one of them has the photographer's name on it: W. D. FENHOLT of Albert Lea, Minn. It is a photo of my great-great-grandfather, Grant C. Hutchinson. The second photo says it is Grant's parents and has this written on it: "To Mrs. R. F. RASMUSSON, So. Bend from Catholic Church".
I would like to know if anyone is researching Rasmusson/Hutchinson surnames in Albert Lea, Freeborn, Minn. I have a lot of photos that need to be IDed.

I am researching my grandmother's family, the NORTONs. They lived on a farm near Oakland in the late 1800's. The father's name was Elmer James Norton -- the mother was Almina Orinda BLISS, who was born 11 Sept 1858, Black Brook, NY and died 20 Jan 1954 in Austin, MN (after remarrying and having another son, Lee MILLER of Austin).
The Norton children were:
-- Evelyn (or Eva Lyn)(my grandmother), born 10 Oct 1890, married Joseph KING on 14 Mar 1912 and lived in Austin until her death 3 Dec 1982.
-- Jesse, b. 22 Mar 1878
-- Eva, b. 15 Jan 1880
-- Miles, b. 29 June 1881, d. 29 Mar 1955
-- George, b. 27 Apr 1884, d. 1917
-- Sarah, b. Oct 1886, d. 16 Oct 1949, m. Burton GILMORE, who died 27 Dec 2000 in Albert Lea
I believe most of the family are buried in Fairview Cemetery. Unfortunately, I have no birth or death dates for Elmer James Norton, nor do I know the names of his parents or where he was born. I was hoping that some public records in Freeborn County would list some of these facts.
If anyone has any further information on this family or if any of this sounds familiar or if there is a place I can get more information, I would greatly appreciate you contacting me. Thanks so much!

My grandmother was Sarah Evelyn EMMONS of Emmons, Freeborn Co., MN, daughter of George H. Emmons and Esther Lena (ROBINSON) Emmons. George H. was born 28 Mar 1855 in Clinton, Rock Co., WI, the son of Helge Gunderson AAMEN and Kjersti (Tina) Larsdatter DAHLEN. Sarah Evelyn married Harry Jackson BRALEY on 20 June 1905 in Emmons.
Helge Gunderson Aamen immigrated from Norway in 1850. He married Kjersti, another immigrant, on 20 Apr 1854 in Clinton, Rock Co., WI. She immigrated in 1853 at age 18.
Helge, his wife, and son, George, came to Minnesota in 1856 and acquired 160 acres of land by preemption. They had eight children.
At this time I don't know who all the children were. I know of three sons: George H., Lewis/Lars H., and Henry H. The "H" probably is for Helgeson from the old Norwegian naming custom.
At some time Helge Americanized his name to Henry G. Emmons and his wife changed hers to Christina (Tina) LARSON.
From the caption on a photo taken at their 50th wedding anniversary, I think that I can identify a daughter, Tina (Christine?) Emmons (Mrs. Jorgen OLSEN) but I have no birth date information. In the photo she looks younger than Lewis but older than Henry. I'd guess her birth between 1857-1866. That leaves four unknown children. According to the article that accompanied the photo, the other four children had died by 1904.
George and Lewis began a business in 1881 in Norman, IA, just south of the Minnesota border. The business was moved north of the border in 1886 and rebuilt on their father's farm. They called it Emmons and it became a town. (I think they moved north of the border because of the strict liquor laws in Iowa at the time.)
I would like to have a complete record of the children born to Henry G. Emmons and Christine Larson, if that is possible. This is what I have:
1) George H., b. 28 Mar 1855, Clinton, Rock Co., WI
2) Lewis/Lars H., b. 30 Dec 1856, Freeborn Co., MN; m. Ingrid Larson
3) Christine, b. 1857-1866, Freeborn Co., MN; m. Jorgen Olsen, 5 children by 1904
4) Henry H., b. 1867, Freeborn Co., MN, d. 31 Mar 1921, Rochester, Olmsted, MN; m. Ingeborg HELLAND, children unknown
5-8) Four more children who died prior to 1904
Thanks to anyone who can help. -Al (Alson) Braley (Alson Emmons, Harry Jackson, Alson Henry, . . .)

There were other Shea siblings but the names aren't definite: Bridget, Michael, Daniel, and John. John Shea was the mayor of Owatonna at one time. I am searching for Johan JOHANNESEN LERUD, b. 1833. He left Vestre Toten, Norway, June 1871 with his wife, Karen, and their children: Johannes, Peder and Johanne Petra. Their destination was Albert Lea, MN .
I have an original letter written to my great-great-grandfather, Ole Anders (or Anders Ole) STOVERN/STOVEREN. It is dated 29 January 1872. It is in pristine condition and my most prized possession. It was written by O. J. HAGEN, Albert Lea. I had it translated by a friend who tells me there was a Hagen & Brothers store in Albert Lea at that time. In the letter Mr. Hagen asks my great-great-grandfather to come and work for him. If anyone knows of this Hagen, I would be happy to send a copy of my letter to a relative.
Another interesting point: In the top left-hand corner is an embossed "crown" with a sort of "boat" type thing under the crown -- it may be a "ribbon" with lettering? Hard to tell!
I would love to hear from any Hagen who is interested -- and would also like to know the significance of the embossed crown

The bullet entered just below the heart. Mrs. Reiber died a few weeks ago and left her property to Martin and trouble came when he tried to dispose of it. He made his escape after the shooting, but was caught. His father is still alive, but no hopes are entertained by his physicians.

C. M. HEWITT, who was born 27 Dec 1837 in Oneida County, NY, came to Freeborn County in 1859. In 1867 he married Lura A. ASH and they had a daughter, May A. Ash [sic]. C. M. Hewitt was an Albert Lea businessman on Broadway. His birthdate appears to coincide with that of my grandfather, Milton E. Hewitt, who was born 15 Nov 1832 in NY state. I suspect they may have been brothers. I am very anxious to determine the parents of either or both Hewitts so that I may be able to identify my paternal great-grandparents. Any assistance anyone can provide will be sincerely appreciated.
I am looking for information on Sophia WEGNER, possibly married to Gustav A. Wegner of Freeborn County. She was probably Sophia NELSON, born ca1894, and sister of my grandmother, Rose BERGUM (1889-1964) and listed as a survivor in the obituary of Connie DISOMMA (1918-1967).

I am seeking information on my HUTCHINSON line. I have recently received a power of attorney that was appointed to my great-grandfather, Grant C. Hutchinson of Kelso, Cowlitz Co., WA, by David K. Hutchinson and wife, Eliza A. Hutchinson, of Freeborn Co., MN, to care for David M. Hutchinson's (deceased) affairs.
I know very little about my great-grandfather, Grant C. Hutchinson. He was born Oct 1864 somewhere in Illinois. His parents were from Pennsylvania. Grant married 1 May 1892 in Kelso, Cowlitz Co., WA to Eliza Bentine Christina JANTZEN. They had three boys in Kelso: Arthur Willard, 1983; Harry Leroy, 1894; and Oliver Sydney, 1897. Grant and Eliza divorced.
I recently received a trunk with photos of what is supposed to be Hutchinsons from Freeborn Co. and Stillwater, MN. I would like very much to ID these folks and find relatives. I don't know what happened to Grant after he and Eliza divorced. The 1900 census says that Grant was a school teacher.
Check out my web page on my Hutchinson line at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cathutch/
I thank you for any help you may send my way. Cathy

I would like to learn about him and locate his descendants while my elderly grandfather (his nephew) is still living.

Charlotte had a sister, Blanche, and, I believe, a brother, Floyd. Charlotte went by the name of Lee. She had a son, Merlyn, and later married Floyd Patterson in St. Paul, MN in 1947-1949. Charlotte and Floyd divorced; she remarried and lived in Bloomington, MN. I would like to know Charlotte's birth and death dates and where she is buried, and I would also like oboituaries for Charlotte and Merlyn. Thank you.
I am looking for information about the RORTVEDT family who have lived in Freeborn County. Bertina Rortvedt is buried in the cemetery in Hayward. I am trying to place them in my wife's family history. Her maiden name was TOLLEFSON -- her family lived in Austin for a number of years. The Rortvedt family should be related to Tollef Tollefson and his wife, Serina Rortvedt. I have no information on births, marriages, deaths, siblings, etc. The Rortvedt family has relatives with the surnames NESSET, POORE, and SELTHUN. Both the Rortvedts and Tollefsons came from Norway. I would be grateful for any help. Thank you.
I am looking for parent and sibling info and any marriage, birth, and death records for Randi SOLLAND and Thrond KVALE. My grandfather, Gilbert Engvald Kvale, youngest of their seven children, was born 3 January 1909. I am told that Randi died 13 months later. Thrond was married before Randi. I have no info on his first wife except that they had three children, the youngest being Peter Kvale, who owned Buttermakers in Emmons. I know the family settled in the Albert Lea area but not sure exactly where. Any info would be helpful!
