The typed and the handwritten indexes are two separate indexes:

1) The typewritten one is titled "Probate Case files." It was originally from the Freeborn probate court, but now owned/held by the Minnesota Historical Society. It has much better coverage of earlier records. As an example, Halvor Peterson died in 1869 and his estate is listed in the case files index, but not the probate court index.
2) The handwritten one is the probate court index. The original is in Freeborn County. The handwritten one covers a longer time frame than the typed one. According to the Family History Libraries, FHL 1315507 Item 2 goes to 1954, but there are more recent records on it than that. If you go to www.familysearch.org, search for Freeborn Co records in the library catalog, and then choose probate you will see more film information.

Introduction to Freeborn County Probate Case Files Index -

1. When file numbers have a 2 or 3 or 4 in brackets [2] after the file number it means that that file number has been repeated that number of times. Therefore, the same number will appear again with additional names in the index.

2. Some files are not numbered, but dates are entered instead. These files are filmed in alphabetical order on the last reel of the project.

3. There are three types of case files in this Index: Estates. Guardianships, and Incompetents (occasionally termed "Insane"). Guardianship and incompetents are so identified in the index. The remaining files are estates.

4. This Index includes case files that were entered into the Probate Register for Freeborn County: Volumes A, B. C, D, and part of Volume E. The Register Volume is indicated before the file number. Example: B-327   This is file number 327 located in Register B.

 

5. The time period for this Index is from 1857 to 1910.
