MARY BETH CONNORS and JOHN JOHNSON ANDREWS Boy River,MN Mary Beth Connors was born in Minneapolis MN on December 23, 1863. Her parents were Milton and Sarah Connors of Pennsylvania. She attended Hamline University and received a teaching degree in 1893 and began teaching in the St. Paul Public Schools. Mary Beth married Swedish immigrant John Johnson Andrews in Minneapolis on March 18, 1894. In 1899 they moved to Boy River township in Cass County, where John built up a harness and blacksmith business, and later a small engine shop. John died of exposure during a blizzard in January of 1917. Two of their children died in the influenza outbreak of 1918. Mary Beth raised the remaining 7 children, but still found time to be an active member of the Methodist church and devoted much time to volunteer work for the Red Cross, her church, and other organizations. The Minneapolis Tribune reported that she was the first woman to cast a vote in Cass County in the special election of March 1922. She taught piano and voice lessons until she was over 80 years old. When she died on February 26, 1949 she had 28 grandchildren, 89 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great grandchildren. Copyright (c) 2003 John T.
