DAUGHTER OF PIONEERS, WIDOW OF BARRISTER, DIES IN DALLAS.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Word residence at 3107 Ross avenue for Mrs. Mary Reeves Word. 83, member of a distinguished Texas family and longtime resident of Dallas, who died early Monday at home. Dr. Graham Frank, pastor of the Central Christian Church of which she was a member will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Word was the daughter of Reuben A. Reeves a officer in the Confederate Army, one-time member of the Supreme Court of Texas and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Mexico during the administration of President Grover Cleveland.
Niece of Roger Q Mills
Her mother, Sarah Mills Reeves was a sister of Roger Q. Mills the well-known statesman.
In 1868 she married Jeff Word, son of Col. Thomas J. Word an attorney well-known both in Mississippi and Texas. At the time of her marriage her husband was law partner of Judge John H Reagan, another widely nown Texas [sic]
Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Word came to Dallas where Mr. Word long was prominent as a jurist and civic worker. He died nine years ago.
Native of Palestine.
Mrs. Word was born at Palestine, where her parents settled when they moved from Kentucky to Texas
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. William Caven, Mrs Louis Leftwich and Mrs. Olive Titterington, all of Dallas; one son, Arthur Word of St. Louis and a granddaughter, Mrs. Robert McClendon of Los Angeles, formerly Miss Mary Olive Titterington of Dallas
Pallbearers at the services Tuesday will be John C Robertson, George Robertson, Alex Camp, D.W. Bowser, F.F. Glenn, Will R. Wilson, Edward Relsterline and Robert Thorburn.
The name on her death certificate (obtained from Texas Death Certificates 1903-1982 on Ancestry.com) is Mary Reeves Word. Cause of death was arteriosclerosis. Place of death was 3107 Ross Ave., Dallas, Dallas Co., TX (home). The death certificate also lists her parents as Reauben [sic] A. Reeves and Sarah Mills.
