Karen Vawn Wanamaker passed away on September 15, 2014.

Karen was born on Feb. 25, 1940. She spent her early childhood in St. Joseph, Mo. and Fortescue, Mo.

She graduated from Craig, Mo. high school in 1956 and then from Missouri Methodist School of Nursing in 1961.

She was soon married and had three children. She then resumed her nursing career and became Director of Nursing at Fairfax (Mo.) Community Hospital in 1972 and later became Assistant Administrator.

In 1989 she married Dr. John Wanamaker who retired from medical practice that same year and the couple moved to Hamburg.

She retired from her professional duties in 1992. She enjoyed her church and home, her many friends and her membership in the PEO sisterhood, of which she was a past president.

She was a past president of the Grape Hospital Auxiliary.

In recent years she devoted her efforts to the restoration of a 1902 local church into a community building named Heritage Hall.

She is survived by her husband, her children: Brian and Shawn Ireland of Kansas City, Mo. and Steven Ireland of Omaha, Nebraska. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery by Rash-Gude. Memorials may be sent to Hamburg Community Corporation (Heritage Hall), box 35, Hamburg. There is no funeral service planned at this time, and possibly a memorial service at a later date.


According to John Wanamaker, she died from complications of chemotherapy that was treating lung cancer.
