N.W. Leonard Died on Sunday At Age of 86
Was Descendant of Pioneer Line Prominent in the County's History.
FUNERAL IS TODAY
Dr. R.H. Ruff to Conduct Rites at the Leonard Home.
N.W. Leonard, 86 years old, prominent farmer and landholder of Fayette, died Sunday morning at Lee Hospital. Funeral services, conducted by Dr. Robert H. Ruff, will be held at Oakwood, the Leonard Home, this morning at 10:00 o'clock. Interment will be made at the City Cemetery.
Mr. Leonard was born here on June 26, 1851. He was a son of Judge Abiel Leonard and Mrs. Jeanette Reeves Leonard. The deceased was educated at Dartmouth College and returned to Howard County to become a leading citizen of Fayette and the surrounding area. He was married to his sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Gardenhire Leonard who preceded him in death. Mr. Leonard was the step father of Mrs. R.P. Spencer but is survived by no direct descendants.

Mr. Leonard's father, Judge Abiel Leonard was a native of Vermont. He came to Missouri via skiff down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to St. Louis in 1819. As a resident of Howard county he was elected to the Missouri Legislature in 1834 and later was appointed justice of the Missouri Supreme Court.
Brothers and sisters of N.W. Leonard, all of whom preceded him in death were the late Mrs. Horace Everett of Council Bluffs, Iowa; the late Mrs. J.B. [sic] Smith and the late Mrs. Charles Darby, both of St. Joseph; the late Mrs Odon Guitar of Columbia; the late Bishop Abiel Leonard of Salt Lake City, Utah; and the late Reeves Leonard.

In Failing Health.
Mr. Leonard had been in failing health for some time. He was taken to Lee Hospital here Thursday morning and pneumonia developed, resulting in his death.
Surviving him are Mrs. R.P. Spencer of Fayette, a stepdaughter, and her family; Miss Helen Spencer of St. Louis, Mrs. George Kuhn, of St. Louis, William Spencer of New York City, Mrs. Kuhn's children, Jeanette and George Kuhn, also several nephews and nieces from other places.
