Notes for Katarina (Kate) Rubesa-Smit

Matt Trinaistich's death certificate (and also a memorial from his funeral) listed his parents' names as John and Mary. John is the English analog of Ivan, so that fits, but according to Roberto Žigulić, from the Status Animarum book for Sv. Matej, his mother's name was Katarina Rubeša-Šmitova (inverted circumflex over the s's), which does not fit with Mary. There is also a baptism record for Mathias Trinajstić which lists his mother as Catharina Rubeša (names in the baptism registry -- and many other records from that time -- are Latinized). Roberto also sent me a section of a book called Chronicle of the Community of Viškovo 2000-2001, about the Trinajstić family in Viškovo from the mid-1800's to present, and that write-up gives Ivan's wife's name as Marija (Mary). Roberto says that this is a mistake that came from the Status Animarum page listing Marija and Ivan, but that Marija was his sister not his wife. This seems to make sense, but does not explain the death info giving Matt's mother's name as Mary. I still have some concern that we could have the wrong person for Ivan's wife, but the birth and baptism records seem to fit. (The Chronicle also says that Mate was born in 1877, which is wrong, but correctly says that he emigrated to America.)

The Genealogy Center of Kastav and Liburnia gives her name as Catharina Rubessa-Smit. They give her birth day as October 31, but a Status Animarum page from Roberto Zigulic shows October 30. The Genealogy Center gives her death date as 12 Apr 1873, which is clearly not correct since two children were born after that. Roberto Zigulic had 13 Oct 1911.
