Notes for Michael Garthwaite
Spelling of Garthwaite taken from Carolyn Gathright Web page. Other spellings include Gathright and Garthwrite. Craig Gathright shows a nickname of Miles. Some trees show Michael as the son of Ephraim Garthwaite and Dorothy D'Isney. Craig Gathright shows him as the son of Samuel Garthwaite (spouse unknown). Carolyn starts her descendant listing with Michael, arguing that his parents are not known for certain. She says strongly that Ephraim Garthwaite and Dorothy D'Isney never left England, so they couldn't be Michael's parents.
WFT Volume 5, Tree 1346:
Michael Garthwrite, son of Ephraim and Dorothy was born about 1628 in Williamsburg, Va. He married in 1647 to Amy. Amy Garthwrite died in 1690. He died in Henrico Co., Va. in 1691. Their children were: Ephraim, Samuel, Michael and Judith who married Robert Jones in 1708. They were Quakers, but just when they left the church in England is not known. The families of Ephraim and Samuel were active members of the Curles congregation in December 1699. Ephraim pledged 150 lbs. of tobacco and Samuel pledged 100 lbs for the support of a new church. In 1722 a new meeting house was built near thier home in white oak swamp. In 1726 Ephraim was fined 500 lbs. of tobacco for refusing to bear arms.

Michael appears in this tree as the son of Samuel Garthwaite, but this is only a theoretical connection. It should be remembered that some researchers feel that Michael is the son of Samuel’s brother Ephraim. While there is a great deal of debate concerning Michael’s father almost all researchers agree that he is related to Reverend Milonis “Miles” Garthwaite of Fulbeck, England.
Michael Garthwaite was born about 1628 in Williamsburg Virginia. He married Amy in 1647 and they remained married until her death in 1690. Michael died a year later in Henrico County. They were Quakers, but when they left the Church of England is unclear.

[AMGENTLE1]- (Owen GATHRIGHT is descended from) Michael GARTHWRIGHT, one of the cavaliers who sought refuge in Virginia after the downfall of Charles I. He was one of the Irish Royalists who joined the king's forces at Newburg. In this famous and fatal battle a cousin of Michael was killed, Sir William St. Leger, Knt., descendant of Sir Robert St Leger, one of the Norman nights; his mother was a GARTHWRIGHT. At the time of the Revolution the descendants of Michael were among the largest land owners above and below Richmond on the James River; portions of those vast estates are still in the GATHRIGHT or GARTHRIGHT family. During the Revolution many of the family were still Royalists.

[ECG]- MGC (506); letter 9/11/56 (?Miles) first in VA. came about 1665 and was NOT a minister, a widely believed family myth.; Oct 11, 1678, name first appears in HNCO records in the Orphans ct. regarding order to kill a cow belonging to the stock of his son Samuel, 1686, received 75 lbs. tobacco for service rendered a sick man. ECG: It is my theory that Michael is either the son of Ann Dixon, Rev. Ephraim's supposed first wife, or that he was the son of Rev Eph's brother Samuel, His dates would fit either way. I lean toward the latter explanation because of the rather thorough documentation of rev Eph's children in MGH, Further, I suggest that he may have come in connection with Henry Isham circa 1669, correlating with Minnie Cook and given the evidence that a Samuel Garthwaite was witness to the will of Henry Isham's Grandmother, Dame Anne Isham. [HOWELL]- Garthwaite family became Quakers with Michael.
[RAND]- We first hear of him in August, 1679, when he acknowledged in court that he had killed a cow belonging to his son Samuel, and agreed to replace the same with a cow six years old and a heifer one year old. On 10.9.1686/7, complained to the court that one John Huddesly had killed a cow belonging to him.
