Hello
My name is Monika Fitzgerald. I am the granddaughter of Frances Higgins m. Robert Fitzgerald. I am in search of Frances line of Higgins. I have been at a brick wall for 4 years trying to locate any trace of the family. This what I do know, Frances Father was Roy Lee Higgins he died in 2001 at his daughter's (Carol) resident in Guilford County, NC. Roy had 3 children with Laura Mae Hawks, they were Frances, Carol, and Dorothy. As I looked into the death index of Roy, his parents are listed as Elmer Jack Higgins and Maud Elizabeth Chappell. I can not confirm that as fact. Being that Carol is still living she doesn't remember any information. I have searched and searched for both but come up with nothing. So I really hope this site can help. I am really lost and would like to come in contact with other living members of my family any distant cousins would be great. I am interested to know who we are. As it seems to me that we must have been the black sheep, direct line of family or we were just common folk that just lived and not known. any help please. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, Monika Fitzgerald, NC monikafitzgerald AT aol.com

Buck Higgins, longtime Vaughan-Bassett exec Galax, Va. — Carlisle W. "Buck" Higgins Jr., former president and chairman of case goods manufacturer Vaughan-Bassett Furniture and the company's longest-serving employee, has died. He was 89.

Higgins joined Vaughan-Bassett in 1939 aftergraduating from the University of North Carolina, and spent the next 68 years at the company. He was president and CEO from 1963 to 1985 and was board chairman until this year.

Doug Bassett, a great-nephew of Higgins and an executive at Vaughan-Bassett, said about 200 people attended the funeral here. Pallbearers were Doug Bassett, his brother Wyatt and Bernie Rector, all of Vaughan-Bassett, and Bill, Taylor and David Vaughan of Vaughan Furniture.

"Wyatt and I loved going into his office and telling him about how the business was doing or some client we had sold," recalled Doug Bassett. "Inevitably, he had a story from 50 years ago about working with the same company."

Bunyan Vaughan started Vaughan-Bassett in 1919. His two daughters married Buck Higgins and Wyatt Exum, who took over running the company after serving as pilots
in World War II. Higgins came to work every day for six decades until health concerns forced him to cut back last year. Doug Bassett said he still would come into the office oftento check in.

"What really came out at the funeral was what a good citizen he was," Bassett said. After his first wife died in 1971, Buck donated a set of hand bells to First Baptist Church in her honor. At his funeral service, those same bells played "Amazing Grace."

He also served on the board of the Wytheville Community College Educational Foundation. Memorial donations may be made to the foundation, 1000 E. Main St., Wytheville, Va. 24382.

Higgins' survivors include his wife, two daughters and two grandchildren.

CARLISLE WALLACE HIGGINS , member of the North Carolina bar, with office in Greensboro, has served as United States Attorney for the Middle District Court of North Carolina by appointment of President Franklin D. Roosevelt since July 1,1934,and is now filling the office for the second term. The attractiveness of North Carolina as a place of residence and the value of the opportunities accorded its citizens are manifest in the fact that so many of her native sons remain within her borders. Such is the record of Carlisle W. Higgins, who was born in Ennice, North Carolina, October 17,1889, his parents being Martin Alexander and Jennie (Bledsoe) Higgins. The Higgins family is of Irish lineage, the first representative of the name coming to the new world in 1629 settling in Massachusetts. Some of their descendants removed to New York, to Pennsylvania and west to Missouri, where they founded the town of Higginsville, Missouri. Others of the name went from New England to Virginia and thence to Alleghany County, North Carolina, the family having long been prominent in the western part of this state.
The Great Grandfather of Carlisle W. Higgins was Hiram Higgins, a soldier of the war of 1812 and a planter in Grayson County, Virginia. Isaac Higgins, the grandfather, was born and reared in Alleghany County, North Carolina, and he, too, became a planter. On the 3rd of May, 1862, he (Isaac Higgins) was commissioned a first lieutenant of Company “I” of the 61st Regiment of North Carolina Troops in the Confederate Army and he died of illness at Goldsboro, North Carolina, on the 28th of December of of that year. Martin Alexander Higgins, the father of C.W. Higgins, was born and reared in Alleghany County, this state, where he had large land interests, becoming a leading farmer and banker. He was also active in civic and political affairs and served as chairman of the board of education for more than thirty years. Having attended Bridle Creek Academy at Independence, Virginia, from 1905 to 1908, Carlisle w. Higgins entered the University of North Carolina and was graduated with the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1913 and 1914 and at his graduation in the latter year the LL. B. degree was conferred upon him. In the same year he was admitted to practice at the North Carolina bar and became a partner of Hon. Rufus A. Doughton, who was made commissioner of revenue of the University of North Carolina on the 1st of January, 1923. In 1918 Mr. Higgins joined the army, becoming a 2nd lieutenant of infantry at the Officer’s Training Camp at Camp Gordon. Following the close of military experience he resumed his law practice and was solicitor of the 11th Judicial District from 1930 to 1934, during which time he participated in the celebrated Smith Reynolds- Libby Holman case, one of the most famous cases of North Carolina jurisprudence. He has also been active in promoting legislation, serving as a member of the House of Representatives from Alleghany County from 1924 until 1926, while from 1928 until 1930 he was senator from the 29th senatorial district, comprising Ashe, Alleghany and Watauga counties. He was chairman on the committee on elections and instrumental at the time in giving to the state the Australian ballot. Since 1934 he has served as United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina. Since his entrance into public life he has been recognized as a leader of the Democratic Party and served from 1914 to 1918 as chairman of the Democratic county executive committee in Alleghany County. He has made a distinguished record as district attorney and he is widely known for his effective and resultant efforts in civic affairs. He is frequently heard in public assemblies, being a speaker of note and one who present with remarkable clearness any question which is engaging public thought at the time. On the 26th of November, 1916, Mr. Higgins was married to Myrtle Bryant, of Independence, Virginia, a member of a prominent family of Grayson County, Virginia.
Their son, Carlisle Wallace, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, class of 1939. On July 4, 1939, he married Margaret Vaughn, of Galax, Virginia, and he is connected with the Vaughn Furniture Factories at Galax; Mary Cecile, the daughter, is a graduate of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, class of 1940, and is now employed as secretary in the Federal Probation office at Greensboro. Mrs. Higgins is a very active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and is also well known in the club and social circles of Greensboro and Sparta.
Mr. Higgins belongs to the Greensboro Country Club, has always been affiliated with the Democratic Party, is quite active in both the American Legion No. 423, A.F. & A.M., of which he is a past master; the Royal Arch Chapter and the Knights Templar Commandery. He is also identified with the North Carolina Bar Association. He finds his recreation mostly in golf.
