Frances Stewart Higgins, 91; her art glass grew famous
Chicago Sun-Times, Feb 26, 2004 by Brenda Warner Rotzoll
Frances Stewart Higgins was so fascinated by a demonstration of the
art of glass fusing that she later made it her career, developing new
techniques and reviving its popularity.
Today, "higgins" pieces of beautiful but always useful art glass can
be found everywhere from brides' wish lists for dessert plates to some
of the world's great design museums, including the Smithsonian, the
Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert in London.
Art critic Paul Hollister called them the "forerunners of the American
studio glass movement."
The lower-case "h" signature includes work both by Frances Stewart
Higgins and her late husband Michael Higgins. They met at the old
Chicago Institute of Design, where she was a graduate student and he
was head of the visual design department.
Mrs. Higgins continued working in the Higgins Glass Studio in
Riverside until Christmas. She died Feb. 12 at her home above the
studio of congestive heart failure. She was 91.
Born in Haddock, Ga., on Christmas Eve 1912, she graduated from the
Georgia State College for Women and later studied at Columbia
University and Ohio State University before teaching art at the
University of Georgia. She was doing advanced studies in Chicago when
she met Michael Higgins. They married Dec. 11, 1948, and left
Chicago's Institute of Design to work together for a half century as
designer-craftsmen in glass.
The couple's first work space was their apartment on the Near North
Side of Chicago, where they rushed out orders for places such as
Marshall Field's, Bloomingdale's and Bullock's Wilshire.
In 1957, they moved operations to the Dearborn Glass Co. in Bedford
Park, a maker of industrial glass that wanted to get into the consumer
market. They designed and supervised production of an extensive line
of glassware until 1964. They had a similar arrangement in 1965 with
the Haeger Potteries in Dundee, then in 1966 moved their operation to
Riverside. Since 1972, the Higgins Glass Studio has been at 33 E.
Quincy.
The couple's technique involved a glass "sandwich" with the colored
design sealed in the middle. They started with a flat piece of clear
or colored glass. Michael Higgins would create a design with bits of
colored glass, while Mrs. Higgins made her designs with liquid or
powdered enamel. Then, a sheet of clear glass would be placed over the
base piece, set over a mold and put in a kiln at 1,500 degrees to melt
or "slump" to the shape of the mold.
Mrs. Higgins applied liquid enamel with a tool she made that resembled
a small kitchen baster. She made patterns with dry powdered enamel by
shaking the enamel onto dried plants, then tapping the plant on the
glass so the enamel fell off in the plant shape.
"They always considered their pieces to be functional, although in the
last 10 years Higgins glass has become so popular and so collectible
that most people haven't been using the pieces as much as they were
meant to be," said Louise Wimmer, who met Mrs. Higgins in 1972.
Wimmer and her son Jonathan inherited the studio and will continue to run it.
Mrs. Higgins had no immediate survivors. A memorial service will be
held from 3 to 5 p.m. April 25 in the Riverside Township Hall, 27
Riverside Rd.

Genealogical excerpts from biography of Eugene Higgins 1874-1958
Eugene Higgins was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1874. He began drawing at an early age but had very
little formal training. His parents were Irish immigrants and his mother died when he was four years
old. Eugene and his father lived in boarding houses in St. Louis. Many years later Higgins acknowledged that
the earliest influence on the development

In 1937, Reverend Andrew J. Kelly, founder of the Catholic Library and Pastor of St. Anthony Church in
downtown Hartford, gave Saint Joseph College on its fifth anniversary a significant collection of American
art. Most of the etchings, monotypes and the oil painting Bracing the Tree in this exhibition are from
Father Kelly's Collection. 1997 is the sixtieth anniversary of this landmark gift.
...
Father Kelly and Eugene Higgins were friends and many times Father Kelly and his colleagues would visit the
Higginses at their home, "Bally Hooley" in Pleasant Valley, Lyme. We like to think of them as kindred
spirits. Eugene Higgins immortalized the poor. Father Kelly's foresight in giving his collection has
fostered appreciation of these works and other great American art. He also believed, "Art for the average
(person) is as necessary as bread, shelter and friendship."

MARTY HIGGINS BURIED AT ARLINGTON CEMETERY WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS Japanese American Veterans Association
Washington, D.C. Captain Martin Joseph
Higgins, 90, and his wife, Marjorie, who died on
October 1, 1997, were buried at the Arlington National
Cemetery on May 15, 2007 with full military honors.
Higgins passed away on February 26, 2007. Three
veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team
representing the Japanese American Veterans
Association and two representatives of the 36th
Division participated in the funeral program. The
442nd Veterans Club Hawaii sent a box of red
anthuriums which were displayed at the chapel and at
the gravesite. The 442nd representatives were Joe
Ichiuji, Kelly Kuwayama and Terry Shima. The 36th
Division representatives were CPT Edgardo Limbo,
USANG, and 1SG John F. Sampa, TXARNG.
Higgins contact with Japanese Americans began on a
fateful day, October 31, 1944, when elements of the
1st Battalion, 141st Regiment of the 36th (Texas)
Division, were rescued by the 442nd Regimental Combat
Team (RCT), a segregated Japanese American unit, which
included the 100th Infantry Battalion. Higgins was
selected by his peers to command 278 men, who had been
encircled by German forces in the Vosges forests of
eastern France and was being annihilated. After both
the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 141st regiment
failed to break through the enemys iron circle, the
442nd RCT was assigned the tough job. The 442nd
pierced the German stranglehold after fighting for
five days and nights and sustaining casualties two to
three times the number of the 211 soldiers left to be
saved in the 141st. This rescue operation was
subsequently characterized by the US Army as one of
the ten most fiercely fought battles in US Army
history.
From that day onward, Higgins was a
steadfast friend of his Nisei rescuers speaking on
their behalf at every opportunity to contribute to the
breakdown of prejudice and discrimination. He also
supported the passage of legislation which provided
citizenship for the Issei, the first generation
Japanese residents in the US.. He was invited to
various Nisei veterans reunions, where he paid his
respects to the rescuers both living and the fallen.
He used his personal funds to visit schools to educate
them on nationalism and the bravery of the Nisei.
Full military funeral for Higgins contained the
following elements: service at the Fort Meyer chapel,
a horse drawn caisson, caparisoned (rider-less)
horse, a color guard, an escort platoon., a military
band, a military chaplain, three rifle volleys by
seven soldiers, military bugler, the formal folding of the flag, and the presentation of the flag to a member
of the family.

November 21st, 2006, filed by Kenneth Li
Media Reporter John Higgins dies at age of 45
John
Higgins, 45, business editor at Broadcasting & Cable and mentor to several generations of younger
media reporters, including this one, died on Monday evening in New Jersey of a heart attack.
He was a reporters reporter, Max Robins, editor of B&C, recalls of the often blusterous but eminently
patient colleague on the media beat.
He was among the first people I met on the cable beat at Reuters. And if not for his 30-second lesson in
cable television economics early on at my first annual cable trade show, I would not have lasted through the
assignment.
Thereafter, Higgins occupied a unique slot at most press conferences, where his questions, often in the
form of witty public lashings, amused the press pool as much as they reduced people with big titles to
human scale at least for the duration of the press conference. If there was an elephant in the room,
hed say, What the f*** is with the big elephant in the room. Robins says. He was absolutely fearless.
Higgins is survived by his wife, Deborah Marrone, an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission, according
to B&C.
Speaking to B&C, Time Warner chief operating officer Jeff Bewkes said, We will miss him. He got a lot of
things right and was decent about what he covered,
even the bad things.

Virginia L Higgins
Plattsburgh Virginia L. "Tonie" Higgins, 74, of
Plattsburgh, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the CVPH Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility in
Plattsburgh.
She was born in Mooers on April 26, 1931, the daughter of Edward and
Edna (Simpson) Higgins.
She graduated from Mooers Central School in 1949 where she was a cheerleader and a star athlete on the
basketball team. She graduated from the Champlain Valley School of Nursing on March 9, 1953, as a
registered nurse. Her nursing career at CVPH spanned over 35 years. She was an avid Red Sox fan and often
watched the baseball game on TV while also listening to the game on the radio. She valued spending time
with her family. Her final four years were spent being cared for more than anything in the Skilled Nursing
Unit at CVPH. She thought of the staff as her extended family. Tonie touched hundreds of lives in the North
Country through her expert nursing skills and her loving, compassionate way she worked with patients.
Whenever she went out in the North Country, people came up to her and said "do you remember me?" or "you
took care of me or someone in my family." They would then turn to whoever was with her and say "she is the
best nurse I ever knew."
She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, John Bernard and
Theresa Higgins of Massena, Walter Timothy and Carol Higgins of Malone and
Clifton Henry and Joyce Higgins of Mooers; a sister and brother-in-law,

Teen killed, two men injured in Kempsville Road crash
By JOHN HOPKINS, The Virginian-Pilot
 August 21, 2003 | Last updated 6:23 PM Aug. 21
CHESAPEAKE -- A teenager was killed and two men were
injured early this morning in a single-car crash along
Kempsville Road, according to police.
Bryan Kyle Higgins, 18, of Chesapeake died as a result
of injuries from the crash that occurred about 1:30
a.m. in the 600 block of Kempsville Road, said Cheryl
Sitler, a police spokeswoman. Higgins was a front seat
passenger in the vehicle, police said.
The three men were traveling eastbound when their 1999
Ford Contour skidded sideways off the right side of
the road and struck a tree, Sitler said.
The vehicle apparently struck a concrete median in the
center of Kempsville Road, near the intersection of
Kempsville Road and Rainbow Run. The vehicle flipped
sideways across three lanes, jumped the curve and
sidewalk, police said.
The car crashed into a Verizon telephone box near the
sidewalk and struck a tree, police said.
"Right now the accident is still under
Investigation,'' she said. It appears that speed was a factor.''
The speed limit near the crash site is 45 mph.
Police said alcohol also may have been a factor. The
office of the commonwealth's attorney has been
consulted and charges are pending against the driver,
police said.
The driver of the vehicle was transported by
Nightingale Air Ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General
Hospital with serious injuries, police said. A
back-seat passenger was transported by ambulance to
Chesapeake General Hospital with injuries.
Police did not release the names of the two surviving
men. They were both several years older than Higgins,
police said.
As Verizon workers spent the day restoring telephone
lines damaged in the crash, friends of the victims
left flowers.
The crash damaged fiber optic cables but a backup
system automatically engaged, allowing residential
service to continue, said Paul Miller, a Verizon
spokesman. Verizon received about eight reports of
service trouble but no major problems, he said.

The Huntsville Times
Guitarist recalled as great teacher, passionate player
'Charlie' Higgins dies; music, ferns two of main loves
06/03/03
By HOWARD MILLER
Times Arts Writer [email protected]
Charles Beecher "Charlie" Higgins of Huntsville, who
died Saturday, will be remembered by his friends for
two of his greatest passions: playing the guitar and
raising ferns.
Mark Torstenson, co-owner of the Fret Shop and a
professional musician, was a guitar student of Higgins
years ago.
"He was one of the most sensitive teachers I ever had.
He played with incredible feeling and had an ability
to cut to the center of what a piece was about,"
Torstenson said.
"And he was a wonderful person." he added.
Classical guitarist Phil Weaver remembers Higgins, 72,
as his very first guitar teacher.
"He was very giving of his personal time with his
students," Weaver said. "He went the second and third
mile to encourage us.
"He had a big impact on the community. When there was
a discussion of classical guitar, the name of Charlie
Higgins always came up. He had a warm performing style
that made you feel like you were in his living room.
He had a rare gift."
Nikki Russell, an accountant at the Huntsville
Botanical Garden and a long-time friend of Higgins,
recalled his passion for ferns.
"I think music and ferns were two of his greatest
loves. He often played guitar at the Fern Sale," she
said. "He was one of the active volunteers. We will
miss him."
Higgins was a charter member and the first president
of the Huntsville Classical Guitar Society.
He taught guitar lessons privately and was a classical
guitar instructor at the University of Alabama in
Huntsville for 10 years. He also specialized in the
finger-picking styles made famous by Merle Travis and
Chet Atkins, and taught those methods.
Born in Elora, Tenn., Higgins attended a music
symposium at age 15 in Dallas, Texas. Back home in
Tennessee, he taught himself guitar at the house of a
friend on a borrowed guitar. He soon began playing piano in church.
Higgins attended Middle Tennessee State University,
where he studied trombone, violin and piano. He played
bass violin for the University Symphony.
He played in a number of bands in Atlanta and Orlando
and moved to Huntsville in 1963. He received a
bachelor of arts degree in music with a guitar major
from the University of Alabama in 1976.
Services were to be at 1 p.m. today at Gallant Funeral
Home in Fayetteville.

Dorothy A. Higgins
Lakeland, Fla. Dorothy A. Bassett Merrill (Mum)
Higgins, 84, passed away at the Lakeland Regional
Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 31, of complications from
heart surgery.
She was born in Canton on July 28, 1917, the daughter
of Joseph Faulkenham and Hazle Velma (Hutchinson)
Bassett. She had resided at Cypress Lakes in Lakeland
for the past two winters and spent her summers at her
home on Sebago Lake in Casco. She was a nurse
throughout her working life but her first love was her
affiliation with the International Order of Rainbow
for Girls. She loved her girls and was very proud of
their accomplishments. Her activity began in 1948 when
she was installed as Mother Advisor of Portland
Assembly 1, where she stayed until 1951. After moving
to the Lewiston/Auburn area, she served as Mother
Advisor of Lewiston Assembly 14 from 1961 when she
resigned to accept the position of Supreme Deputy to
the International Order of Rainbow Girls, a position
she held until 1991. She was elected to membership in
the governing body of the international organization
in 1976. Upon election to this office Mum Higgins
exclaimed Thats the most unbelievable thing I have
ever heard! Her reasoning was that she was too old,
couldnt afford it, and would not know what to do.
Obviously her peers thought differently. From
1992-1999 she was appointed to served as Supreme
Religion and was elected to the positions of Supreme
Hope in 1996 and Supreme Charity in 1998 and Supreme
Worthy Associate Advisor in 2000, a position she held
at the time of her death. She was to be installed as
Supreme Worthy Advisor in Orlando, Fla., in July of
2002. Along with her activities with Rainbow, she also
was involved with the Order of Eastern Star, having
been a member of Deering Chapter 59 of Portland in
1944, and was a current member and thrice Past Worthy
Matron of Mt. Olivet Chapter 29 Order of Eastern Star
in Auburn. On Sept. 13, 1939, she married John E.
Merrill Jr. at Mechanic Falls. He died on April 18,
1976. She then married Merritt S. Higgins of Standish,
again being widowed in 1999.
She is survived by two sons, John E. Merrill III, and
Peter A. Merrill and his wife, Cindy, all of Lakeland,
Fla., and Casco; two granddaughters, Valerie G.
Merrill of Raleigh, N.C., and Kimberly Ellis of
Roanoke, Va.; a grandson, Stephen K. Merrill of York;
and a great-grandson, Christopher Ellis of Roanoke, Va.

TAPPS ARE SOUNDED FOR ANOTHER CIVIL WAR VET.
REUBEN HIGGINS OF COAL GROVE DIES
Reuben Higgins, Coal Grove's last civil war veteran and one of seven surviving in Lawrence county, joined the ranks of the heavenly legion Thursday afternoon at three o'clock. He died at his home, 43 Pike street, at the age of 95 and 10 months.
Mr. Higgins had been ill for some time and four weeks ago he entered the Marting hospital for treatment. Improvement was noted, he was removed home and a few days ago he suffered a relapse and had since been in
critical condition. Death came regardless of the best medical attention and loving care. He passed peacefully into eternity with members of his family at the bedside.
Death of Mr. Higgins leaves only six surviving Civil War men in the county. He enlisted with Capt.
Wm. G. Smith in Co. H, 9th Virginia Infantry, at the age of nineteen years and served until honorable discharged Dec. 31,
1863, at Fayettesville, W. Va., to serve under Captain John H. Johnson of Co. H, 1st Veteran Regiment of West Virginia Infantry Volunteers. Final discharge came on July 21, 1865 at Cumberland, Md., after he had marched to the sea with Sherman and participated in other noteworthy Civil War engagements.
On July 22, 1869, Mr. Higgins was united in marriage to Martha Ellen
Sloan, by Rev. E. V. Bing of old Laken Chapel in Coal Grove, and nine children were born to them. Their happy union continued until four years
ago, when the beloved wife and mother died. He was a son of John and
Sarah Payne Higgins, was born in this county October 22 1842, and was the last member of his family. He had resided in Coal Grove forty-eight years and was a staunch member of Zoar Baptist church. Three children preceded Mr. Higgins in death but six survive:
John, Allen, Mrs. Birdie Myers of Coal Grove, Mrs. Margaret Mahaffey of Ironton, Misses
Mettie and Georgia Higgins at home. Fourteen grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews in Huntington, Ashland, Newark and other points also survive. One grandchild,
Robert Mahaffey, preceded him in death.
Mr. Higgins war service was noteworthy and was marked by unusual incident. In brush with Confederates he crosses the Guyan River 96 times in escape attempts but was finally captured and spent nine months in Libby
Prison and at Andersonville. He was a member Dick Lambert Post G.A.R. of Ironton and of Coal Grove Jr.O.U.A.M.
The body was returned to the residence this afternoon by Bingaman and Jones and friends may call there.Last services will be conducted in the residence Monday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. J. B. Law of Coal Grove M. E.
church with burial in Woodland cemetery.

Longtime U-Mary broadcaster Rog Higgins dies at 76
By KERRY COLLINS and STEVE THOMAS, Bismarck Tribune
The sound of University of Mary sports will never be
the same.
Rog Higgins, the voice of the Marauders since 1989,
died at his home Monday after a battle with leukemia.
He was 76.
"He was a media icon," U-Mary athletic director Al
Bortke said. "He was a familiar voice and a familiar
face to everyone. He'll be extremely missed."
Higgins started as an announcer for KBOM radio in
1956. He became the sports director at KXMB-TV in 1957
and moved to KFYR-TV and radio in 1959. After retiring
from television broadcasting in 1989, he joined
KLXX-AM as the voice of the Marauders.
"Since 1989, he's been a positive influence on me, a
positive influence on our coaching staff, and most
certainly our kids," Bortke said. "He had a great
sense of humor that was quick and would always make
everyone laugh."
Higgins, a native of Warren, R.I., came to the Midwest
while pursuing a professional baseball career. He
played pro baseball from 1945-57. He was recruited to
Bismarck to play for the Bismarck Barons in the
Man-Dak League in 1955 and he helped pitch the team to
the league title. He was the ace of the Bismarck
Barons pitching staff, going 22-4 with the team over
two seasons.
Before signing a baseball contract with the Boston Red
Sox, Higgins was an outstanding multi-sport high
school athlete. He was named into the Warren Athletic
Hall of Fame in 1999.
Known for his colorful style, Higgins was inducted
into the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters
and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1993. His
broadcasting career spanned 47 years.
Former Bismarck public schools athletic director Dick
Karlgaard said Higgins' abilities as a sportscaster
were amazing. "When he did the sports back in those
days he'd go out and do a Friday night ballgame. Then
he'd hustle back to the station, jot a couple of notes
on the back of an envelope and do the sports,"
Karlgaard said. "He quickly adapted to being a
sportscaster and a very fine sportscaster. ... Rog
Higgins was a very intelligent person. He had a high
school education but was very bright."
He was named the state's sportscaster of the year for
1971 and 1975, and was a recipient of the North Dakota
High School Coaches Association Award of Merit.
Higgins was inducted into the U-Mary Hall of Fame in
1997, and had also been honored by the school as an
Honorary Marauder. He was recognized by the university
last January in honor of his 500th broadcast of a
U-Mary event when the Marauders hosted a basketball
doubleheader against Black Hills State.
"Rog had a tremendous stake in the success of all our
athletes," Bortke said. "He had a major impact on our
athletic program, and he'll always have an impact on
our program, even with his passing."
Not only was Higgins the voice of U-Mary athletics,
but he had a vested interest in the success and
failure of every athlete playing in a Marauders
uniform.
"He was a father-type to all of our athletes, and
everyone respected him as an athlete because of his
career in professional baseball," Bortke said. "He
came out here and stayed in the community and raised
his family. He was always in the spotlight.
"The memory of that will never leave us."
Karlgaard knew Higgins for 45 years, played fastpitch
softball with him and amateur basketball against him.
For much of that time the two were close friends. "Our
wives were classmates at BSC ... so we became social
friends years ago," Karlgaard said. "I consider it a
privilege to have been a good friend of his for over
40 years."
"I never talked to anyone who disliked Rog Higgins."
Karlgaard added. "He didn't have a mean bone in his
body. ... He was a very personable guy who made
friends easily."
That was due in part to his ability as a raconteur.
Higgins possessed an endless array of stories that
sprang from over 60 years in sports, televison and
radio.
Gene Werre first made Higgins' acquaintance in 1959
when the former pitcher became the Bismarck Legion
baseball coach. He began working with Higgins in 1969.
"He was working at KFYR when I started there 34 years
ago," Werre said. "He used to do (sports) play-by-play
and he'd do it all by himself. I'd go out with him
every once in a while and keep stats for him."
On those road trips to and from games, Werre was
introduced to Higgins' ability to spin a tale. "He'd
be full of stories like you couldn't believe," he
said. "... A great guy."
