Baltis A. Higgins enlisted August 15, 1862 at Newark, Virginia for 3
years service as a Private in Company "F" 11th West Virginia Infantry.
Nurse in hospital since since January 1, 1863. On Jul/Aug 1864 roll is
sick in hospital at Parkersburg, Va since June 20, 1864. On Sept/Oct
1864 roll he is on detached duty at field hospital. Sick in hospital
since November 29, 1864. Sick in hospital at Cumberland Md. on Jan 11,
1865. He was mustered out by reason of disability (Chronic Diarrhea) at
Richmond, Virginia on April 7, 1865.
Personal Information: Age 30 at discharge, 6 ft tall, Dark complexion,
Dark hair, Dark eyes. Born in Ohio. A farmer by occupation.

Baltis A. Higgins, the son of David & Sarah
(Anderson) Higgins, was born April 6, 1832 in Licking
County, Ohio. He served in the Civil War, enlisting Aug. 15, 1862 at Newark, W. Va. when he was 30 years
old. He served under Capt. Stoddard in the 11th
Volunteer Infantry, Company 'F' and was discharged with a disability April 17, 1865 at Cumberland
Maryland. On his discharge papers, he was listed as
six feet tall, with dark eyes and dark hair. He listed his home as Dundas, Vinton County, Ohio.
On Nov. 3, 1861 in Ritchie County, W. Va., Baltis
married Emily Bird Hardin. At the time of his
marriage, Baltis resided in Wirt County, W. Va (Emily's maiden name has been found as Harden and Haren. Also found listed as Emily Birch.) Emily, born
Dec. 6, 1830 in Barbour County, W. Va., was the daughter of Absalom and
Jane (Watts) Hardin.
In 1890, while living in Coalton, Jackson Co. OH, Baltis wrote an affidavit for Elizabeth Tennant, widow
of Samuel Tennant, for a Civil War pension. In April of 1890 he wrote an affidavit for John A. Arnett's war
pension. (#739.668) In said document, Baltis stated
that he was a nurse at the hospital in Parkersburg WV for part of the war.
Baltis died May 6, 1906 in Ada, Hardin County, Ohio. Emily died August 15, 1896 in Coalton, Jackson
Co. Ohio. Both are buried at Coalton Cemetery, Coal
Twp., Jackson County, Ohio No death date on Baltis's stone. The birth dates for both are on the stone.

Patrick Higgins enlisted on August 22, 1862 at Valley farm, Virginia
as a private for 3 years service in Captain Shaw's Company "G" 15th
Virginia Infantry*.He was mustered in on October 23, 1862 at Camp
Willey, Wheeling Island Va. (Now W. V.). On a muster roll dated October
31, 1862, it states he was sick in hospital. On Jan/Feb 1863 roll it
notes he had been AWOL for 8 days. He appears on a hospital muster list
of USA General Hospital at Parkersburg, W. V. dated July/August 1864.
Died of typhoid fever on July 30, 1864.
* Subsequently became the 15th West
Virginia Infantry.
Personal Information: Age
20 at enlistment, 5 ft 7 1/2 in tall, fair complexion, Hazel eyes, Brown
hair, Born Green County, Pennsylvania. Occupation given as farmer. He
had been a resident of Wood County. A letter in his compiled record from
his father, Joseph Higgins, stating he received his son's personal
effects.

Daniel William Higgins* enlisted November 13, 1861 at Jackson, Ohio. He
was enlisted by David Dove for 3 years service in Company "H" 2nd West
Virginia Cavalry. He was mustered in on November 24, 1861 at
Parkersburg, Va. Detailed as Hospital Steward June 25, 1862 at
Regimental Hospital.
Mustered out January 20, 1864. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on
November 22, 1863. Re-Mustered January 21, 1864. His final rank was as
Sergeant Major and Hospital Steward (Non Commissioned Staff). He was
mustered out June 30, 1865 at Wheeling West Virginia.
Personal Information: Age at enlistment is 35, 6 ft 1/2 in tall,Fair
complexion, Grey eyes, Dark hair, Born Bedford County, Virginia.
Occupation is given as an Agent.
*Also noted as William Daniel Higgins in file, roster shows him as
Daniel William Higgins. His recruit declaration was signed as William D.
Higgins. On many receipts for equipment he signed Wm. D. Higgins.

Josiah P. Higgins joined, at New
Creek, Va, for duty and enrolled December 23, 1863 in Company "G"
(Captain Winter's Company) 1st Virginia Mounted Volunteers which later
became Company "G" 1st West Virginia Cavalry. He signed up for 3 years
service. Taken prisoner Warrenton, Va and exchanged March 1, 1863.
Mustered out of this regiment on December 31, 1863. Later re-enlisted in
Company "D" Veteran's Cavalry on January 1, 1864. . On Jun/Jul 1864 roll
shows him absent without leave, states his day of desertion as July
7,1864. Another page states he deserted June 15, 1864 at Lewisburg, Va.
Charge of desertion removed by order of the president (s.o.582

Records show previous enlistment in 1st Virginia Mounted Volunteers on
September 14, 1861 at Camp Pierpont.

record that he received the pension. The file notes his date of death as
March 12, 1927 at Huntington, West Virginia.

written by Pensioner. (Death certificate gives D,O.B. as 02/24/1844)
Deserted from his Army enlistment on June 1,1864 and enlisted in Navy at
Cincinnati, Ohio as a substitute for an enlisted man. Applied for
removal of desertion charge, which was denied.
Served as Seaman on board U.S. Steamship Sybil & U.S. Steamship
Granpus & U.S. Steamship Great Western & U.S. Hospital
Ship Red Rover, from which he was discharged from on July
27,1865 at Mound City Illinois.

prisoners at Military prison at Wheeling, W. V. ( aka Athenium
Prison) was arrested on March 23, 1864 at Marshall County, W. V. as
a deserter and sent to Martinsburg, W. V. on March 25, 1864.
July - October 1864 roll - Absent at dismount camp
April 1865 - Absent at remount camp. Mustered out on July 8, 1865.

Wheeling Virginia. He was mustered into service for 3 years on September
25, 1861. On May/Jun 1862 roll is listed as absent, sick in hospital at
Alexandria, Virginia. On Jul/Aug 1862 roll is listed as absent sick in
hospital at Washington City. Appointed orderly Sergeant July 13, 1862.
On April 10,1863 special muster roll he is listed as absent to be a
witness at a court martial. On detached duty on May - Aug 1864 rolls as
a orderly Sergeant at Brigade Headquarters. He was mustered out, as a
Sergeant, at Wheeling W. V. on November 23,1864.

Thomas Lew Higgins, at age 24, joined for duty and enrolled as a First
Sergeant on August 9, 1862. He was mustered in at Wheeling Virginia in
Company "H" 15th Virginia Infantry* for 3 years service. He was 1st
Sergeant from enrollment to January 26, 1864 when he was promoted to 2nd
Lt. His first station was Camp Perry at Portland, Maine. File
states he was absent, wounded in hand by gunshot received at battle of
Winchester, Va, since September 19, 1864. He was mustered out June
14,1865 at Richmond Virginia.

Island Va. (Now W. V.). On Jul/Aug & Sept/Oct 1863 roll is at General
Hospital at Cumberland, Md. On 10 day furlough from August 15th to
August 25th 1863. On Nov/Dec 1863 roll is listed at General Hospital at
Parkersburg, Virginia. Sick in Hospital at Cumberland, Md since April 3,
1864.
Discharged for disability on June 7, 1864 at Cumberland, Maryland.
Disabilities noted were diarrhea and Chronic pneumonia.

Virginia Infantry on June 10, 1865 at Wheeling West Virginia.
Appears on 1890 Veterans Census Schedule Collamer and
Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Refers to service as a
Lieutenant in Company "K" 6th West Virginia Infantry
from September 23,1861 to October 1864.
