John P. Galarno
"Deaths - John P. Galarno, 69, resident of Port Huron 15 years was found dead in bed in his home, 193 Calumet street, Monday afternoon. Coroner Clinton Downs said Galarno, who lived alone, probably died Sunday. He said death was due to heart disease. Police Sergt. Alex Tebeau and Detective Sergt. George I. Holdburg and Coroner Downs investigated. Galarno was born Aug 22, 1869 in St. Clair county. He lived all his life in the county. He is survived by two nephews, Oran Smith, Saginaw, and George Sterling, Chicago, and two nieces, Mrs. Myrtle Kirby and Mrs. Fred E. Smith, both of Port Huron. Rev. H. H. Davis, pastor of First Baptist church will officiate at funeral services at 2 p.m., Wednesday in the Downs funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery."

Frank L. Galat
"Port Huron - Frank L. Galat, 78, of Port Huron passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Port Huron Hospital. He was born to Frank and Catherine Galat on Feb. 13, 1922, in Abbottsford. He graduated from Port Huron High School in 1940. He married Albena Cymbalski on Sept. 9, 1944, in the Ruby Methodist Church. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as an officer and pilot. He retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Co. after more than 35 years of service. He enjoyed his cottage at St. Joseph, Ontario, and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He liked to play golf and he was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Frank was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Albena Galat of Port Huron; his three children, Dawn M. Buechel of Kimball Township, Cathy J. (Greg) Busdicker of Fort Gratiot Township and Thomas J. (Emily) Galat of Oakton, Va.; five grandchildren, Kimberley (John) Drako of North Branch, Jennifer and Carrie Buechel, both of Kimball Township and Tyler and Libby Busdicker, both of Fort Gratiot Township; three great grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlynn and Tristen Drako; his brother, Theodore (Lillian) Galat of Detroit; his two sisters, Margurite Krol of Port Huron and Helen (Edmond) Rydelek of Warren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Skowron, Genevieve Dazer and Sophie Dombrowski; and a brother, Fred Galat. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Ralph H. Pieper II, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ruby Cemetery under direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Thomas Galat, Greg Busdicker, Tyler Busdicker, John Drako, Eric Roskey and Matthew Kelly. Honorary pallbearers will be Theodore Galat and John Paul Lepien. Memorial contributions may be made in Frank's memory to First United Methodist Church or the Port Huron Hospital Foundation."

Thomas F. Galbraith
"Fort Gratiot - Thomas F. Galbraith, 64 of Fort Gratiot, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 1999. He was born to George and Mary Hatzke Galbraith on Jan. 6, 1935, in Oscoda County. Mr. Galbraith, a 29-year employee of the Michigan Department of Transportation, retired from his position as superintendent of the Blue Water Bridge in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Julia J. "Judy" (Bailey); two sons, Michael T. of Burtchville Township and David P. (Karen) of Marysville; daughter, Lisa A. (Kamran) Pishevar of Bloomingdale, fil.; granddaughters, Amanda N. and Melissa R. Galbraith and Abigail A. Pishevar: and grandsons, Bijan A. Pishevar and Thomas F. Galbraith. He is also survived by brothers, James and Martin, and sisters Margaret Kaufman and Agnes Klemens. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in St. Edward's On-the-Lake Catholic Church in Lakeport, The Rev. Leonard P. Wallace will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visiting will be 2 to 9 p.m. Wednes.day in Port Huron Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St., where a Scripture service will be at 8:30 p.m. Visiting also will be at the church from 11 a.m. Thursday until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Port Huron Hospital's Cardiac Care Unit."

Belle Eva Garbutt
"Fort Gratiot - Belle Eva Garbutt, 93, of Fort Gratiot died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Barrs A.F.C. Home, Fort Gratiot. She was born February 28, 1907, in Fremont Township, the daughter of the former Samuel H. and Selma A. Adolph Erb. Her marriage to Fred Garbutt was December 31, 1934, in Port Huron. Fred died November 8, 1992. They resided in the Yale area until 1976 when they moved to Mio, and in 1922[?] to Port Orange, Fla., and then back to Michigan a year ago. Belle was a graduate of Wayne State University and was a school teacher for 28 years and had taught at Port Huron area schools for 18 years. She was a former member of Jeddo United Methodist Church and of Mio Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and secretary of the Michigan Education Association of St. Clair County. Surviving is a sister-in-law, Betty Gossman, and her husband, Myron; 6 nieces, Bethany Belanger, Cynthia Simmons, Laurel Crorey, Elizabeth Macaluso, Margaret Scheen, and Darlene Hess; 2 nephews Richard and Gregory Gossman; many great nieces and nephews; 2 great-great nieces and nephews; and many cousins including Edith and Vernie Teichow. A funeral ceremony in appreciation for the life, family and friends of Belle will be noon Tuesday at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale, with burial in Springhill Cemetery, Greenwood Township. The Rev. Emerson Arntz, pastor of Jeddo United Methodist Church, will officiate. Memorials may be given to the Histocytosis Association of America. Visiting hours will be 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday."

"East China - Mrs. Mary Jean Gauthier, 72, of East China died Sunday, February 11, 2001 in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was born June 14, 19928 in St. Clair, to Ralph and Anna Mayhew. She married Howard W. Gauthier Sr. of St. Clair on May 17, 1947. She was employed by the East China School District for many years. Survived by her husband of 54 years, their children and their spouses; Mr. Howard W. Gauthier Jr. of St. Clair, Mr. John (Linda) Gauthier of East China, Mrs. Patricia (Jim) Raymo of East China, Mr. Jerry Gauthier of Columbus, Mrs. Gail (Jack) Allen of St. Clair, Mrs. Karen (Herbert) Niebauer of St. Clair, Mr. Thomas (Julie) Gauthier of Port Huron, Mr. Jeffery Gauthier of Columbus; sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Mr. Ralph (Geri Mayhew of St. Clair, Mr. Carl Mayhew of St. Clair, Mrs. Dorothy Williams of East China. Mrs. Katherine Dandron of St. Clair, Ms. Joan Bachand of Marysville, Mr. Robert (Lynn) Mayhew of Lexington. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter. Angela Anna, in 1969. She is survived by her husband, Fredrick Gauthier Sr.; her sons, Fred Jr. (Martha) Gauthier, Michael (Sonja) Gauthier, Mark (Michelle) Gauthier and Brian (Kim) Gauthier, all of St. Clair; her daughters, Linda (Andy) Bennett, Terry (Dave) Charest, Darlene Vitale, all of St. Clair and Denise (John) Collins of Marysville; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters, Sue (Dan) Witmer of Illinois, Marilyn (Mel) Leverenz of Florida, Richard DiPuie of Port Huron, Kathleen Lyons of Indian River, John (Paudene) DuPuie of St. Clair, Jim (Rita) DuPuie of Marine City and Jeanette Gauthier of St. Clair. "Fort Gratiot - Michael P. Gayer, 77, of Fort Gratiot, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999 in Mercy Hospital. He was born March 17, 1922 in Sandusky, and was a lifelong area resident. He married Helen H. Horvath on May 2, 1986. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church; a member and past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus; a member of the American Legion Charles Hammond Post 8; and a member of the Sandusky Dance Club. He was known by many as the "retired Carpenter" in Port Huron and he loved to dance. He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Gayer of Fort Gratiot; his son, Kelly (Lisa) Gayer of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a very devoted widowed daughter-in-law, Linda Guyer of Taylor; his daughters, Michelle (Roland) Schroeder of Arizona and Victoria (Jack) Whalford of Sandusky; his stepson, William Boldizsar Jr. of Port Huron; his stepdaughter, Barbara (Terry) Napolitan of Westcliffe, Colorado; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; his brothers, John and Matthew; his sisters, Elizabeth Chambers, Julia Gyuran and Anna Gyuran; and his sisters-in-law, Cecelia Gayer of Florida, Violet Gayer of Hadlay, and Helen Gayer of Taylor. Ada M. Gayfield
"Marine City - Mrs. Ada M. Gayfield, 94, of 149 Brown Street, died today in River District Hospital. She was a former resident of Sanilac County, and of Port Huron for more than 36 years. She was born Dec. 20, 1871 in Plymouth, Mich. She and Frank A. Gayfield were married in March 1893, Mr. Gayfield died Dec. 1, 1934. She lived in Marine City the last two years. In December 1961, on her ninetieth birthday, Mrs. Gayfield was honored at a reception in Mills Memorial Methodist Church after 23 years membership and active work in the church WSCS. Mrs. Gayfield also was a member of Boynton Hive No. 24, Maccabees; the Ladies Auxiliary to Canton Huron No. 15, Patriarchs Militant; Oakleaf Rebekah Lodge No. 113 and the Ladies Auxiliary to Charles Schoor Post No., 796, VFW. Mrs. Gayfield is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Garnet DeCou Sr., Marine City; seven grand children, 24 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. A son, Clair M. Gayfield, died in 1935. Remains are in Bower and Rose Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Rev. J. Bruce Brown, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeville Cemetery, Lakeville, Mich."

Chester Gaylord
"Chester Gaylord died at his residence on Sixth street Wednesday evening, aged 72 years. The deceased came to Port Huron about 15 years ago and for awhile was engaged in the grocery business. Of late years he has been in poor health, having received a stroke of paralysis. For the past two or three weeks he had the grip and suffered from a carbuncle. He was a member of the Royal Templars of Temperance and held an insurance policy in that organization of $2,000. A wife survives him."

Remains are in the L. C. Friederichs and son funeral home. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home and at 10 a.m. in Holy Rosary church, Smiths Creek, Rev. "St. Clair, Feb. 16 - Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from the L. C. Friederichs funeral home and at 10:30 a.m. from St. Phillip's Catholic church, Columbus, for Theofil Geraltowski, 57, who died Sunday in Lakeland, Fla. Mr. Geraltowski operated a store in Rattle run for a number of years. He had been vacationing from the winter in Florida. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance of America. Surviving besides the widow, Mrs. Stella Geraltowshi, are one son, Harry Geraltowski, one daughter, Mrs. Irene Andrzejewski, both of Rattle Run. Rev. Sigmund Dziatkiewicz, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Phillip's Cemetery."

Beatrice M. "Sharpie" Gerhold
"Port Huron - Beatrice M. "Sharpie" Gerhold, 74, of Port Huron went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 20, 2000, in Port Huron Hospital. She was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Grand Rapids to the late Civil and Deborah (Terpstra) Sharp. She married Harold E. Gerhold Aug. 4, 1950. He preceded her in death March 2, 1990. Mrs. Gerhold was a self-employed housekeeper. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and helped raise more than one hundred foster children. She is survived by a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James (Lynne) Struble of Port Huron; a son, Hal Gerhold, and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Jean Gerhold, both of Port Huron; a son, Delbert Gerhold of Florida; four grandchildren, Anthony and Lynnette Gerhold of Florida, Kyle and Alissa Struble of Port Huron; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Harry, and a daughter, Vicki M. McNaughton, on March 24, 1991. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 23, 2000, Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2000, in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Rev. "St. Clair, March 26 - Miss Gertrude German, 73, City Clerk in St. Clair 17 years, died early today in her home 706 Vine street. Miss German was a life resident of the city and was born here Dec. 31, 1882. She retired as City Clerk in 1953. Prior to her service as City Clerk, she was employed for 13 years by Frederichs and Son Furniture company. Miss German was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal church, a member of Cornell chapter No. 93, OES, and a member of Rebekah lodge No. 33, Marine City. Miss German is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lettie Parsons, Mrs. Mary Mitchell and Mrs. Jessie Busha, all of St. Clair, also 12 nieces and nephews. Remains are in the L. C. Friederich’s and Son funeral home where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Howard Rutenbar, pastor of St. Paul’s Episcopal church, will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery."

"Smiths Creek - Carl M. Gerschow, 79, died Wednesday, March 18, 1992. He was born March 22, 1912, in Smiths Creek and had been a lifelong area resident. He married Josephine Dolinski Aug. 14, 1937, in Smiths Creek. Mr. Gerschow was the past treasurer of the Smiths Creek Senior Citizen Club and was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Smiths Creek. He was employed at Lamberts International Dealership and L. C. Formans Pickle Factory in Smiths Creek, retiring in 1974. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Elbert Wilson of Smiths Creek and Lorraine and Raymond Foglesong of Fort Gratiot Township; a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Barbara Gerschow of Memphis; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and two special nephews, Karl Falk of Richmond and John Damecki of Arizona. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in the Arthur Smith Funeral Home-South Chapel. The Rev. John F. Hall of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Smiths Creek will officiate. "Marysville - Elizabeth Gierman, 82, of Marysville died Saturday, June 24, 2000, in Port Huron Hospital following a short illness. She was born April 8, 1918, in Croswell and was a lifelone resident. She married Lee A. Gierman on July 3, 1937, in Port Huron. He died Dec. 26, 1970. She was active in Trinity Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church. She loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her granddaughters, LeAnne Gierman of Port Huron and Linda (Jeff) LaMonica of Kimball; grandson, Christopher (Lynette) Gierman of Port Huron; granddaughter, Jill Gierman of Port Huron; great-grandchildren, Max, Zachary, Lauren, Kaitlyn, Jocelyn, Alyssa, Jon, Evan and Spencer; daughter-in-law, Mary Rita Gierman of Marysville; sisters, Christine Nutt of Port Huron and Emily Zimmerman of Port Huron; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Elsholtz of Marysville, June (Raymond) Coleman of Genesee and Norma Gierman of Port Huron; and many nieces and nephews. Walter R. "Buddy" Gierman
"Marysville - Walter R. "Buddy" Gierman, 57, of Marysville, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in Botsford Hospital, Farmington Hills, Mich., after a long and courageous fight with medical complications resulting from an accidental fall in December 1998. He was born May 22, 1942, in Port Huron and lived all of his life in the Port Huron area. He graduated from Port Huron High School in 1960 where he excelled in wrestling and football. Walter retired from the Micbigan Department of Transportation after 30 years of service. He was a longtime coach in the Port Huron Minor Hockey Association and was a fan of the Port Huron Flags. He enjoyed stamp collecting and was a former member of both the Port Huron and Sarnia stamp collecting clubs. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl J. Gierman of Marysville; his two children, Kenneth (Mary) Gierman and Angela Gierman, both of Port Huron; his two stepchildren, Aaron (Diane) Wick of Poplar, Wis., and Amy (Bret) Marler, Hobart, Ind.; six grandchildren; and his mother, Frances Badley of Port Huron. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Gierman, and his grandmother, Alice Fox. He will be dearly missed by his family. The funeral service will be at 12 noon Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, in Port Huron Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Daniel Bakay, Pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Cremation will follow with a family interment later in Croswell Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Old Newsboys Association or the Port Huron Minor Hockey Association."

"Marysville - John Thomas 'Jack' Giffer, 62, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1988, in his residence from a heart attack. He was born March 18, 1925. Mr. Giffer was retired from CSX Railroad where he worked in marketing and sales for 30 years. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Judy Giffer of Rochester Hills; son, John T. Giffer Jr. of Ypsilanti; daughters and son-in-laws, Judy and Joe Schillaci of Muskegon and Jill and Tom Kammer; of Port Huron; six grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-laws, Robert and Evelyn Giffer of Toledo, Ohio, and Patrick and Colleen Giffer of Mount Clemens; sisters and brother-in-laws, Joyce and Lawrence Doyle of Grosse Pointe and Sally and Bernard Ballelli of Livonia and several nieces and nephews. "Marine City - John M. Gill, 95, died Monday, Feb. 25, 1985. He was born Jan. 16, 1890, in Cottrellville Township. He married Beatrice Stager Smith Nov. 21, 1927, in New Baltimore. She side Dec. 23, 1984. Mr. Gill was a retired farmer and construction worker. He was an Army veteran of World War I. "Former Marine City man shot in Florida argument - A Florida man is being held on a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a former Marine City resident. John M. Priestley, 50, Seffner, Fla., is being held for the shooting death of Melvin L. Gill, 30, formerly of 646 Madison St. Marine City. Funeral arrangements for Gill will be handled by the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City. Gill and Priestley were in the TNT Bar, 11018 U.S. 92 East, Seffner, when they began to argue about 10 p.m. Friday, said Jack Espinoza, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff Department. Both men left the bar for the parking lot, where the argument escalated and Priestley pulled out a gun and shot Gill, Espinoza said. The motive for the argument is not known, he said."

"Found Dead in Parked Car - Edward L. Gillette, former manager of the Port Huron Coal & Dock Co., here was found dead in his car this afternoon on Taylor street. Mr. Gilette, who had apparently taken his own life Friday night, was dead of carbon monoxide poisoning, officers said. A hose had been fitted to the exhaust pipe and poked into the car through the trunk. The remains were discovered by Louis Darczy, 433 Taylor street, who investigated after seeing the car parked near the street and overnight."

"Man Found Dead in Parked Car - Rites Tuesday for L. Edward Gillette - Funeral services for L. Edward Gillette, 2380 Military street, who took his own life Friday night by carbon monoxide poisoning, will be conducted at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday is the Arthur Smith funeral home. Mr. Gillette, who was manager of the Port Huron Coal & Dock Co. 30 years when it was owned by the Cleveland Cliffs Steamship corporation was found dead in his car Saturday afternoon in a field near 433 Taylor street. Coroner Robert F. Hartley ruled that the death was suicide. Louis A. Darczy, 433 Taylor street, told Detectives John Down and George Nelson that he saw the car parked in the field Friday night and again Saturday. When he investigated he found the body. A hose led inside the car from the exhaust pipe. Mr. Gillette left a note in the glove compartment. It read: 'This property arrangement has caused all the trouble. My heart is broken. Check is in the gas station at the Blue Water Bridge.' Rev. E. J. Soell, pastor of St. John's Reformed and Evangelical Reformed church, of which Mr. Gillette was a member will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Mr. Gillette was born Dec. 21, 1894, in Bancroft, Mich. He was employed by the Kantzler Lumber company, St. Clair. Mr. Gillette was a member of the Port Huron lodge, No. 158, LOOM. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Catherine M. Gillette; a daughter, Mrs. Ervin Doan; two granddaughters, Mrs. Lloyd Dawson, and Rose Ann Doan, all of Port Huron; his mother, Mrs. Lillian Wright, Bancroft; a stepdaughter Mrs. Russell C. See, Port Huron; three stepsons, Alvin, Harold and Frank Hall, all of Port Huron, and a great granddaughter, Schyrl Ann Ward, Detroit."

"St. Clair, June 3 - Mrs. Mary E. Gliem, 89, widow of Charles A. Gliem, died Thursday night in St. Clair. Mrs. Gliem was born May 29, 1866 in St. Clair, daughter of the late Frederick and Fredericka Meyer. She and Mr. Gliem were married Sept. 12,1888 in St. Clair, Mr. Gliem died in 1941. Mrs. Gliem was a life member of Immanuel Lutheran church. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Louise G. Fisher, a missionary in India; Mrs. Freida Chapman, St. Clair, and Mrs. William G. Guenter, Detroit; a son, Frederick Gliem, St. Clair; a brother, Edward J. Meyer, Tucson, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. A daughter, Era Hayward, preceded Mrs. Gliem in death. The T. R. Bower funeral home is in charge of funeral services at 1 p.m. Sunday at the family home, 510 South Riverside, and at 1:30 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran church. Rev. C. H. Siess, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery."

Simon Gliem, Sr.
"Simon Gliem, Sr., died Friday evening last at a little after six o’clock. The deceased was born Feb. 3, 1828, at Oberellem near Eisenach in the duchy of Meiningen, Germany. Here he was educated in the common schools and Sept. 19, 1852 was married to Miss Anna Elizabeth Stein, with whom he lived happily to the time of his death and who still survives to mourn his loss. Mr. and Mrs. Gliem and their son Simon emigrated to this country and settled in St. Clair in 1883 where they joined their other son Charles who had come here the year before. In all eight children were born to them five of whom died in Germany and one, Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Dallmann, is still residing there. The best tribute that can be paid to this couple as a good father and exemplary mother is to be found in the character of their children two of whom are among our most esteemed citizens and like their father and mother have a well established reputation for sturdy integrity and honorable dealing. In all in addition to the aged wife he leaves behind two sons, one daughter, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law and ten grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Gliem were consistent members of the Lutheran church and were highly esteemed by their associates in church and society. In addition to the loss of the church and family the community loses in his department one of its most industrious and best citizens. The family desire through the Republican to express their appreciation of and gratitude for the innumerable acts of kindness shown by neighbors and friends during his last illness and in connection with the funeral of their loved and departed one."

Louis Goldstein
"St. Clair, May 6 - Funeral services were held today in the Ira Kaufman funeral home, Detroit, for Louis Goldstein, veteran St. Clair dry goods merchant, who died Wednesday in St. Clair Community Hospital. Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrelic, of Beth Aaron Synagogue, Detroit, officiated. Burial was in Clover Hill Park Cemetery, Detroit. Mr. Goldstein, owner of a dry goods store here 50 years, was born in Poland. He came to Detroit at the age of 18 and was a peddler of small dry goods items and notion to towns and country stores along the St. Clair river for several years. In the early 1900's he moved to St. Clair with his family and opened a small store in the old Barron business block. He later occupied quarters in the Lieberman block and in the Inches building before purchasing the present store at the corner of Riverside avenue and Trumbull street. He and his family attended Mt. Sinai Synagogue, Port Huron. He is survived by his widow, Ethel; a son, Israel Allen Goldstein, St. Clair, and a nephew, Leonard Forman, in California. Another son, William, died in 1919 while a student at the University of Michigan. A daughter Rose, died in 1943."

"Honor - Carrie Lynn Gonyon, of Honor, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Her death was the result of an automobile accident that occurred on Tuesday, Dec, 14, 1999. She was born June 12, 1970, in Port Huron to Charles and Cherith Drugich Apsey. Carrie is survived by her husband, Timothy A. Gonyon; two sons, Taylor, 9, and Timmy, 7, of Honor; father and stepmother, Charles and Rae Ann Apsey of Port Huron; mother, Cherith Pitts of Lapeer; brothers, James Apsey of Jackson, Charles and Valerie Apsey of Columbiaville and Jared Apsey of Port Huron, Irvin Pitts of Lapem sisters, Sara Apsey of Port Huron and Angela and Mike Ross of Melvin; and grandparents, Charles and Betty Apsey, Lyle and Dollie Drugich. Carrie was preceded in daeth by a very special friend, Mike Catton of Honor. She was his angel in life and he was hers in death. Carrie Lynn was a community caregiver, assisting those less fortunate than herself. It was said that if one needed love, Carrie loved them; if they needed food, she fed them; and if they needed clothing, they were clothed. Carrie had a special heart for the wounded of this world and is deeply and profoundly missed by all those whose lives she touched. Carrie Lynn would always have us remember the words of St. Paul: "Though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit." The funeral took place in Beulah at the Eden Bible Church on Monday, Dec. 20, 1999. Cremation followed the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Carrie Lynn Gonyon Memorial Fund, in care of Deb Reed, 6453 Smeltzer Road, Benzonia, Mich. 49616."

"St. Clair - Betty Jean Goodnough, age 69, of St. Clair died Saturday, May 13, 2000. She was born March 1, 1931, in Idaho. She married Harold Goodnough on April 23, 1949 in Waukegan, Illinois. He preceded her in death in 1997. She was a member of Marine City United Methodist Church and the church's Women's Society and assisted with many church activities. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Roland; her son, Michael of Marine City; foster parents, Bernard and Anita Ameel of Marine City; her brother, Rockwell (Tina) Rowe of Detroit; her foster sister, Bernetta (Joseph) Borneman of Marine City; her foster brother, Richard (Nancy) Ameel of Lapeer; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Donald and Lynn Cohrs of Marine City and Wanda Rogers of Marine City; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. "Wherever he went, she went, and whatever he did, she did. That was Jessie C. Green's devotion and love for her husband, Alger, friends say. Mrs. Green, of 4544 Green road, died Wednesday in Port Huron Hospital. She was 89. The Greens celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last Friday with all the warmth, humor and love of the day they were married. That was their way, said Persel Fitz of Memphis, who knew the couple all his life. "Jessie was always working with her husband on the farm," Fitz said. "They thought a lot of each other." Mrs. Green was born Jan. 12, 1898, in Smiths Creek. She was a lifelong resident and was a member of Lambs United Methodist Church. She was married to Alger Green on Sept. 18, 1917, in Port Huron. She had one son, Loren, and a foster son, John Waters. "She was a wonderful person. She would do anything for you,: said her daughter-in-law, JoAnn Waters. Hard work on the farm didn't bother Mrs. Green, said a friend, Melanie Masters. Mrs. Green loved being outdoors. "She was always a very hard wonder." Masters said. "She's going to be missed." Funeral services are at noon Saturday in the Arthur Smith funeral Home North Chapel. The Rev. Martin Caudill of Lambs United Methodist Church will officiate."

Norman H. Greenlaw
"Port Huron - Norman H. Greenlaw, 78, of Port Huron, formerly of Ontario, Calif., died Thursday, May 4, 2000, in Port Huron Hospital following a brief illness. He was born April 2, 1922, in Presque Isle, Maine, the son of the late Harvey and Hattie Greenlaw. He married Patricia Tibedeau. She died Sept. 25, 1992. Mr. Greenlaw served in the U.S. Army and was a retired roofer. After retirement, he spent his time feeding the homeless in California. He was a member of Echos of Faith Church in Chino, California and in Port Huron he attended Life of Faith Church. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Judy Greenlaw of Port Huron; his son, Roger Greenlaw of New Mexico; 13 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and Lenny Greenlaw. Private family services will take place. Burial will be in Bellview Cemetery, Ontario, Calif. "St. Clair - Mr. Alfred I. "Hap" Gregg, 78, of St. Clair Township died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in William Beaumont Hospital. He was born May 5, 1922, in Richmond to the late C. Elmer and Irene Hamblin Gregg and was a lifelong area resident. He married M. Arlene Macey on May 27, 1950, in Port Huron. Mr. Gregg retired from Chrysler Corp. in Marysville after 35 years of service. He was a medic in the United States Army 573rd AAA AW Battalion during World War II. Mr. Gregg enjoyed farming, hunting and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Arlene; three sons, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Denise) Gregg, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Kristine) Gregg and Mr. and Mrs. Alwyn (Peggy) Gregg, all of St. Clair; three daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Paul (Katherine) Welser of St. Clair, Mr. and Mrs. David (Cheryl) Allison of Avoca and Mr. and Mrs. David (Pamela) Reynolds of Port Huron; nine grandchildren, Jason and Justin Welser, Thomas and Jacob Gregg, JoLee and Branden Gregg, Emily and Weston Allison, and Christina Gregg; two sisters, Florence Cheney and Helen Smith of Marysville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Merle and Norman, and two sisters, Nellie and Shirley. "Funeral Thursday For Former Memphis Man - Memphis, July 8 - Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday for the late George C. Gregg, 74, prominent local citizen, who died at his home here Monday. Services will be from the home and will be in charge of Rev. F. H. Townsend. Mr. Gregg, who was a member of the village council and justice of the peace, died Monday evening after a few weeks illness. He was born Dec. 31, 1850 in Rose Valley, Wayne County, New York. He lived a number of years on a farm east of Memphis and 12 years ago moved in this village. He had served as village president and was a member of the Masonic and Eastern Star orders. In 1870 Mr. Gregg married Miss Henrietta E. Farlow of Humboldt, Iowa, who died in June 1916. They were the parents of four children who still survive: James Gregg and Mrs. Ellery Waite of Memphis; Mrs. Clayton Lewis of Port Huron; Mrs. William Burgam of Armada. Mr. Gregg was married June 6, 1918 to Mrs. Mary Mesic of Memphis who survives."

"'Grandma' Gregg, 91, Dies In Daughter's Home; Rites Sunday - Smiths Creek, Feb. 18 - Mrs. Henrietta M. Gregg, who observed her ninety-first birthday less than two weeks ago, died Thursday afternoon in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Hollis, where she lived. Mrs. Gregg had been failing in health since the latter part of January. She was born Feb. 4, 1847, in Darien, N.Y., and came to Michigan with her parents in 1854. She was married to James H. Gregg March 4, 1865, a Civil war veteran, who died in 1885. Before coming to Smiths Creek, Mrs. Gregg lived in Riley Center, Richmond and Port Huron. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Hollis; Mrs. Jessie M. Ramsey, St. Clair; Mrs. Nettie M. Hicks, Richmond; Mrs. Mabel M. Buckingdail; two sons, Elmer Gregg, Smiths Creek, and Carl Gregg, Mikado, Mich. There are many grandchildren and great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Mills funeral chapel, Memphis. Burial will be in Memphis cemetery."

Mr. Gregg was born Oct 11, 1885 in Humboldt, Iowa. He was a member and deacon of Goodells Baptist Church. He is survived by his widow, Hazel; a daughter, Mrs. Warren Storey, Port Huron; a son George C. Gregg, Memphis; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Muriel Snay of Japan; Mrs. Howard Welch, Hamilton Tex.; and Mrs. C. Francis Malane, Port Huron; two stepsons, Elliott P. Boubonais, Port Huron, and Gene Bourbonais, St. Clair, 22 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Clayton A. Lewis, Port Huron, and Mrs. Opha Burgam, Clawson. The remains are in the Arthur Smith Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Rev. Maurice Christenson, pastor of Goodells Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Memphis Cemetery."

"SMITHS CREEK - Norman E. Gregg, 61, of 375 Scott Road, died Wednesday in River District Hospital following a long illness. He was born March 24, 1917, in Rattle Run, and was a lifelong resident. He married Loreen Eagen on Feb. 28, 1942, in Port Huron. Mr. Gregg was an army veteran of World War II; a member of D.A.V.; Moose Lodge No. 158; a member of St. Christopher Church and a former employee of Morton Salt Co. and Riverside Tank. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Bonnie MacNeil, Smiths Creek, Mrs. Jean Turner, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Mrs. Irene Herdegen, Chicageo, Ill; 11 Grandchildren; a brother, Alfred Gregg, Smiths Creek; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Cheney, St. Clair, and Mrs. Helen Smith, Marysville; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Chrisopher Church. Rev. Joseph P. McElgunn, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Christopher Church."

"Fort Gratiot - Richard A. Gregory, 68, of Fort Gratiot fell asleep on Thursday, May 4, 2000. He was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Marysville. He married Jeanie A. Lien on July 21, 1990, in Port Huron. Mr. Gregory was a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses, first and foremost in his life. He was employed by Acheson Colloids Company for 47 years. He is survived by his wife, Jeanie A. Gregory; his sons, Scott M. (Trish) Gregory and Shawn B. Bates; his daughter, Amber S. (C.J.) Wendell; his son, Christopher H. Calder; his grandsons, Shawn M. McMahan and Daniel C. McMahan; his brothers, Morris Weymouth and Jerry (Jeanette) Gregory and his sister, Lois (Roy) Annabell. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. His cremains will be laid to rest next to his son Lester at Riverlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York Inc., 25 Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201-2483. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him, until that glorious time, not far in the future, when all those in the memorial tombs will be called by Jesus and come out. She married Louis T. Grimes on Oct 22, 1948 in Peck. He passed away Sept 25, 1997. Mrs. Grimes was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Sandusky. She was a member of T.O.P.S. 1542. Mrs. Grimes graduated from Peck High School in 1943. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Lou Grimes of Marysville and Mary Lee Grimes of Sandusky; three grandchildren, Brian, Nikki Lou and Angela Lee Sheldon; stepmother, Cleo Bunk of Sandusky; one sister, Sue Liebler of Lansing; two brothers, Kendrick (Jean) Kerrins of California and Thomas (June) Kerrins of Port Sanilac; four sisters-in-law, Doris Kerrins of Peck, Pauline Woodbury of Fort Gratiot, Esther (John) Pickler of Illinois and Annable (Earl) Beers of Peck; four brothers-in-law, Stuart (Dorothy) Grimes of Peck, James (Gail) Grimes of Sandusky, Clinton Tenniswood of Melvin and Earl Williams of Sandusky; and several nieces and nephews. "Nicholas Groffen, 96, died Tuesday, August 16, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel Finch, 1116 Varney street, Port Huron. He had been ill about a week. Mr. Groffen is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Galon Moak, St. Clair, Mrs. Finch of Port Huron, one son, Harmon, of Port Huron, in grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A pioneer resident of St. Clair Township, Mr. Groffen lived on a farm on Mitchell Road until four years ago. He was born August 20, 1853. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at the T. R. Bower Funeral home. Rev. Henry Firth of Port Huron will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery. The remains are at the funeral home."

"Marine City - Regina Gromek, 80, of Marine City entered into eternal life on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001. She was born in Hamtramck on Jan. 26, 1921, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Budda Kaminski. She married Stanley J. Gromek in Richmond on Jan. 13, 1957. He preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1991. Regina was a member of the Michigan Extension Club. Surviving are her children, Deborah (Mike) Miller, Mark S. And Steven J., all of Marine City; sister, Helen Belzyt of Richmond; and grandchildren, Janel and Dustin Miller. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in the Bower-Rose Funeral home, Marine City. The Rev. Harvey W. Reh will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Starville. "St. Clair, Sept.14 - Mrs. Gertrude Grossmeyer, 84, widow of Henry Grossmeyer, died Monday in Central Hospital, Detroit. Mrs. Grossmeyer was born Aug. 4, 1870 in China township. She lived in this area all her life until eight years ago when she and Mr. Grossmeyer moved to Detroit. Mr. Grossmeyer died four years ago. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Lillian MacIntosh, St. Clair, and Mrs. Emerson Fornwall and Lula Grossmeyer, both of Detroit; two sons, Milton and Miles both of Detroit; six grandchildren, a brother, Joseph Tung, St. Clair, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Grossmeyer, Detroit. Remains are at the T. R. Bower funeral home. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Catholic church with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Kromenaker, pastor, officiating. She had lived in this locality for 25 years. Surviving her besides her daughter, are four sons, Adolf, St. Clair; Vitold, Redford township; Joseph, Walls, Mich; and Casimer in Poland; 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. from St. Phillip's Catholic church Columbus township, Fr. Sigmund Dziatkiewicz officiating. Burial will be St. Philip's cemetery. The remains are at the home of her daughter and arrangements are under the auspices of the R. Bower funeral home, St. Clair."

"St. Clair Township - John J. Gryszkiewicz, 70, died Sunday, March 6, 1994, in River District Hospital after a long illness. He was born June 28, 1923, in Detroit and was a longtime St. Clair Township resident. He married Lorraine Stankiewicz July 4, 1943, in Smiths Creek. Mr. Grysziewicz was a self employed pallet repairman for several area companies including Diamond Crystal Salt Co. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and POW medals and was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 12. He is survived by his wife; two sons, and Mrs. and Mrs. Ronald (Patricia) Gryszkiewicz and John J. Gryszkiewicz Jr. of St. Clair; daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas (Kathryn) Beers of Marysville; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Ben (Denise) Zimmer, Renee, Jennifer, Rachel and Daniel Gryszkiewicz and Angela and Kristin Beers; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many dear friends and neighbors. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Phillip's Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Zielinski of St. Phillip's Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in St. Phillip's Cemetery. Marion Gustin
"Port Sanilac - Mrs. Marion Gustin, 76, died Wednesday in Mercy Hospital, Port Huron, after a long illness. She was born Nov. 27, 1897, in St. Clair. She lived in Detroit from 1920 until 1972. She and William Gustin were married June 22, 1947, in Bay City. Mrs. Gustin attended Eastern Michigan University, was a graduate of the University of Michigan, and recieved her master degree from Columbia University. She taught school in Detroit for 44 years, the last 22 of which she was principal of the Edison and Williams Schools in Detroit. She served as school administration supervisor in Detroit. In 1927 and 1929 she served as national representative for the Detroit Primary Reading Department. Eastern Michigan University, under the sponsorship of the Daughters of the American Revolution, also designated her as Michigan's reading representative to Washington D.C. Mrs. Gustin was a member of the Alpha Sigma Society and the YWCA. She also was active in civil affairs.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hacker Funeral Parlors, Sandusky. Rev. Glenn Dimmitt, pastor of Sandusky Presbytererian Church will officate. Burial will be in Port Sanilac Cemetery. Mrs. Gustin is survived by her husband; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jo Mc Elyea, Nashville, Tenn., two step-grandchildren, and a brother, John Thomson, Essexville, Mich."
