Webmasters FAQ

  1. Webmasters FAQ

[Return to Top of Page]

Types of County Page

  • Every page may provide a free query page. This can be handled either with a form and posted automatically, or with E-mail to the page owner and updated manually.

  • Every county may provide for reference lookups. You may list whatever resources you have in your personal library, offering to do lookups in them. You should provide a place on the lookup pages where other volunteers could, if they wish, volunteer to do look ups. You might also list other books that have been published on your county and ask for others that have these books to volunteer to do lookups.

  • If you have not already done so, you need to join the mailing list for the state. This is where we discuss all matters having to do with the MO-AHGP project.

Duties of a County Coordinator

  • There are a few basic duties that every county coordinator must do in order to be responsible for a county page in this project. The Duties are:

      1. You need to create a main county Web page, a query page, and a lookup page. If these pages already exist you would modify the existing pages. These pages must meet the Requirements listed above.

      2. You don't need to understand how to set up Web pages, we can help you with that aspect of the project. Once you become a coordinator we can give you more details on HTML editing.

      3. You would be responsible for adding query requests to the county query page. These requests come from your query page, by e-mail

      4. You would maintain a lookup page for reference lookups. If you like, you may list whatever resources you have in your personal library, offering to do lookups in them. You should provide a place on the lookup pages where other volunteers could, if they wish, volunteer to do look ups. You might also list other books that have been published on your county and ask for others that have these books to volunteer to do lookups.

      5. If you have not already done so, you need to join the mailing list for the state. This is where we discuss all matters having to do with the project.

Helpful Web Sites

  • "Any" AHGP Project volunteer is welcome to a free shell/FTP account at RootsWeb (https://sites.rootsweb.com/), where they may upload HTML documents and files for FTP. Volunteers may use as much space as they need for genealogical data, though RootsWeb does request that users not upload personal GEDCOM files. For volunteers with large datasets (vitals, census extracts, ... ) RootsWeb will help by building custom search engines as resources allow. Contact them to arrange for accounts.

  • You can download HotDog by Sausage Software here. A great html editor that takes the fear out of designing your web page. Available in three packages. Give it a try!

  • You can get HTML information online. A good site with online information about HTML is located at http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimer.htm l . This is a good site to visit and print out this primer for reference.

Welcome to the MO-AHGP help sites

  • As new county pages are put up on the web, they are checked for the required elements and to be sure your links work. If there are any problems with links or any required elements missing, they will let you know so you may make any changes or corrections. Post a message to your state mail list when you are ready for your page to be checked.

  • It is the policy of the AHGP Project to obtain permission from the creator of any code, graphics, and backgrounds before using them on our pages.
