Troy Nell DeBusk daughter of William Hayden DeBusk and Emma Rena Burlison was born 29 Oct 1922 in Pearson, Cleburne County, Arkansas and died 12 Jul 2013 at Good Samaritan Society, Wagner, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. She married Dr Bruce T. Brookman 04 Apr 1946. He was born 19 Jul 1915 and died 08 May 1993. They are both buried at ZCBJ Cemetery, Wagner, Charles Mix County, South Dakota.

Funeral services are 10:30 A.M, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Wagner. Burial is in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner, with Military Honors. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM with the family present from 6 to 7 at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.

Troy Nell Brookman was born October 29, 1922 at Pearson, AR, the daughter of William Hyden and Emma Rena (Burlison) DeBusk. She died Friday, July 12, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society in Wagner. She attained the age of 90 years, eight months and 13 days. Troy Nell was raised in Arkansas and graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1944.

Troy Nell served in the Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant from April, 1945 to June, 1946. She worked as a psychiatric nurse until the conclusion of WWII. Her patients in the psychiatric wards made a profound effect on her for the rest of her life. She was very proud of her military service and was a charter member of Women In Military Service for America. It was while working as an army nurse that she met a handsome young doctor, Bruce T. Brookman. They were married on April 2, 1946 in Augusta, GA. Dr. Brookman initially practiced in Chamberlain, SD and in Blythville, Arkansas before the family returned to Wagner, SD in 1952, to join the medical practice of Dr. Richard Honke.

Troy Nell was involved in many activities. She was a long time member of the United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Wagner Historical Society. She was also active in in Chapter W. PEO; Hospital Auxiliary, Wagner Library Board and the American Legion. She and Dr. Brookman were Wagner Labor Day parade marshals in 1974 and jointly received the “Community Service Award”, given by VFW Auxiliary in 1975. She was also co-editor of the “News and Views” newsletter at the Good Samaritan center for many years.

Troy Nell accompanied Bruce on numerous hunting and fishing trips and travels over the years. She was an avid reader, having learned to read at the age of three. It was an overwhelming joy to her all of her life. Her family was the most important part of her life.

Thankful for sharing her life are her daughter, Janelle (Steve) Cowan, Sioux Falls; daughter, Rosemary (Stanley) Peters of Wagner; and son, Phillip (Brenda) Brookman, Apple Valley, MN; seven grandchildren: Chad (Lisa) Peters, Jennifer (Tom) Sedlacek, Jacob (Jessica) Peters, Angela (Chad) Meyer, Melissa Brookman, Justin Brookman, Brook (Christina) Nelson; nine great-grandchildren: Drew Delvaux; Talia, Spencer and Jaden Peters; Emma, Addison and Jace Sedlacek; Dani Meyer and Dawson Peters.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Karen Nelson.
