Paul DeBusk of Heber Springs
celebrated his 101st birthday this month. DeBusk was born November
22, 1900 in Dixon County, Tennessee to Ira and Salura Douglas Ellis
DeBusk. Currently he resides in Southridge RetirementVillage in Heber
Springs.
In October 1901 the senior DeBusk
loaded up his family in a covered wagon, along with several other
family members, and headed to Arkansas. In those early20th century
years parts of Tennessee and Arkansas were swampy, so going by wagon
was slow, often requiring a few detours. The family entourage
finally arrived in Clay County, through Batesville and finally in
Quitman. An uncle had gone ahead of the wagon train to rent a house
big enough to hold them all. They located in Center Point, east of
Quitman. In 1902, the family bought a plot of land, made a crop and
eventually settled at Bettis Mountain.
In 1919, DeBusk left home to look
for work and harvested wheat in Kansas. He entered mechanical school
in Kansas. He was 18 years old. He missed serving in World War I
because he was too young and in World War II because he was to old.
He married Linda Pearl Kennedy in 1923
who died in 1983 at the age of 75. He was 23 and she, 16. He worked
for the WPA (Works Project Administration), the wheat fields and with
Beech Aircraft in Wichita for 13 years, finally retiring to their farm
in Pearson. His son Lowell lives in Springfield, Missouri and daughter
Elaine in Heber Springs. Thanks to Donna Murphy.
