Nancy's parents, Andrew and Hattie (Campbell) DeBusk, died when she was very young and subsequently she was raised by her Uncle Will and Aunt Kate Campbell and Granny Nancy Campbell. She grew up as a member of Union Chapel Church. During World War II, she worked on the Manhattan Project for four years in Oak Ridge. She went to LMU thereafter and met her future husband, Dr. William N. Smith. They married in 1946 and became lifelong partners in all aspects of their lives together. While in Harlan, Nancy was very active in many community affairs, one of which was heading the fundraising as the chairperson of the American Cancer Society for two years. They returned to Tazewell in 1959 because Nancy wanted to come home. It was then that together they established the New Tazewell Family Practice office. They joined the New Tazewell United Methodist Church and became very active in church affairs. Nancy taught Sunday School and sponsored several missions, including a "Carlos" Peru mission. They both enjoyed the lake with their family, swimming, skiing and boating.
