Lois DeBusk, daughter of Samuel "Sam"
Dickson DeBusk and Frances Virginia Broocke,
married E. Loyal "Buck" Garrett
on 20 Jul 1929 in the First Methodist parsonage
in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas.She was
born 24 Jun 1910 in the family home near
Burkett, Coleman County, Texas and died 02
Oct 2008. She is buried Burkett Cemetery,
Coleman County, Texas.
E. Loyal Garrett was born 19 Mar 1904 and
died 18 Jan 1984. He graduated from Corpus
Christi High School in Corpus Christi, Nueces
County, Texas and attended Baylor University
in Waco, McLennan County, Texas for 3 years.
After the marriage they moved to Breckenridge,
Stephens County, Texas where he worked for
the National Supply Company. He was working
for Socony Vacuum before buying a furniture
store in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas.
They lived in Venezula for a period of time
when he was with Socony Vacuum.

Lois DeBusk Garrett, age 98, joined her Lord
and Savior on October 2, 2008.
Visitation will be Saturday, October
4th,
from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral
Serviceswill
be held at Higginbotham Funeral
Home in Cross
Plains on Sunday, October 5, 2008
at 2:00
p.m. Burial will follow at the Burkett
Cemetery.
Lois DeBusk Garrett was born to Sam DeBusk
and Jenny Brooke DeBusk on June 24, 1910
at the family home near Burkett. Lois was
the fifth child of six, and the youngest
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam DeBusk. Lois
married to E. 1. (Buck) Garrett in July,
1928, at the age of l8.
Lois was preceded in death by her infant
son, William Dickson Garrett in 1936, and
her husband E.L. (Buck) Garrett, in 1984.
Lois is the last surviving child of Sam and
Jenny DeBusk.
As a child, Lois attended school
in Cross
Plains, and had the distinction
of being
the person who chose the mascot
for the school,
the Cross Plains Buffaloes. Thanks
to Lois,
Cross Plains has been home to the
Buffaloes
since 1927. Lois led a colorful
life and
lived in many areas of the world,
including
Caracas, Venezuela, Hobbs, New Mexico,
and
several cities in Texas, including
Ranger,
Pampa, Borger, Big Spring, Odessa,
Fort Worth,
and Brownwood, before retiring in
Cross Plains.
Lois worked as a clerical and administrative
assistant at many banks, insurance
companies
and oil companies during her married
years.
Lois and her husband returned to
the United
States in 1950, from South America,and
purchased
the Austin-Morris Furniture Store
in Brownwood.
In 1962 Lois and E. L. retired in
Cross Plains,
where Lois has made her home for
the remainder
of her life.
Lois has made many contributions to the Cross
Plains community; icluding her
tireless work with the Library,
The Senior
Citizens Center, and the First United
Methodist
Church of Cross Plains. Lois led
an active
life and enjoyed riding her bicycle,
playing
golf, and working in her garden
into her
80’s. Lois was and avid historian
and kept
many memorabilia for the DeBusk,
Brooke,
Koenig, and Eubank families in this
area.
Lois and E. L. were the parents
of only one
child, a son who died shortly after
birth.
When Lois’s sister, Cora Belle Koenig,
died
of cancer in 1959, Lois took on
the role
of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother
to Dick Koenig, his children and
grandchildren,
and Frieda Belle Koenig, and her
children
and grandchildren. Lois became known
to the
entire community as simply "Aunt
Lois".
Lois loved life, people and pets,
and she
brought joy, love and laughter to
all those
around her.
Lois is survived by: her nephews, Dick Koenig
of Cross Plains; Pat DeBusk of Houston; Jack
Angely of Earth; nieces, Natalie Klick of
Boulder, Colorado, Judy Reynolds of Dallas;
Dorothy Odom of Cross Plains and a host of
great-nieces and great-nephews. In lieu of
flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions
be made to the Lois Garrett Memorial Fund
at the First United Methodist Church, P.O.
Box 160, Cross Plains, Texas 76443. Donations
will be used to complete the furnishing of
the newly rebuilt church. Lois was a faithful,
life-long member of the Methodist Church.
