Loreatte  Marie  Byrd daughter of Claude Russell Byrd and Bessie Ruby Strawn was born 12 Aug 1923 in Grosvenor Community, Brown County, Texas and died 16 Jan 2013 in Ft Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. She married Vernon J. C. Horton son of Chester Horton and Lillie Arrington 27 Jul 1946 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. He was born 21 May 1922 in Coleman, Coleman County, Texas and died 17 Jul 1977 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. They are both buried at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mausoleum, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.

Obituary

Marie Byrd Horton, 89, of Fort Worth, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Her family will greet friends Sunday, 6 to 8 P.M., at Greenwood Funeral Home in Fort Worth, with graveside services at 2 P.M. Monday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the foundation honoring her dear departed granddaughter, the Amy E. Shewbart Foundation, Inc., 4516 Chalk Hills Ranch Ct., Fort Worth 76126.

Marie was a native of Coleman County. She attended school at Cross Roads, Buffalo, and West Ward, and graduated from Coleman High, Class of 1940. She was an avid basketball player throughout her school years.

During World War II, Marie worked as a ticket agent at the Trailways bus terminal in Brownwood. In July 1946, Marie married the love of her life, Vernon Horton of Bangs. She would give birth to a daughter, Linda, in 1948, and a son, Terry, in 1954. In 1962 they moved to Fort Worth and opened Vernon's Antiques, a wholesale antique distributor serving the Texas antique community for many years. They spent every Thanksgiving and Christmas with the Byrd family with their beloved aunts Osie & Opal Byrd in their home at the old Aynes place in Grosvenor.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon J.C. Horton; her parents, Claude Russell Byrd and Bessie Ruby Strawn Byrd; a brother John F. Byrd; and a granddaughter, Amy Walker Shewbart.

Marie is survived by her children, Linda and Al Pugh of Fort Worth, and Terry and Janice Horton of Austin; a brother Claudie L Byrd of Arlington; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
